Ask me anything reflection
The designers I contacted were Lucie Thomas and Thibault Zimmerman who are a duo known as Zim&Zou. I have been following their instagram account for a while now and have always been fascinated by the way they perfectly craft their designs. I was amazing that I even got a reply from them, let alone amazing answers to my questions. I was a bit unsure what questions to ask them as I was rather overwhelmed. But in the end I decided to ask questions that I was generally interested to know.
The questions I asked were..
1. What made you focus on installation using hand crafted objects, rather than computer design?
2. Was it a tough journey to get to where you are today?
3. From your experience as a designer, would you say there is a higher demand for hand crafter designs rather than computer based?
4. Who was your favorite client to work for?
5. Is there a certain theme of industry who commissions your work?
To come up with these questions I place myself in their shoes and thought about the kind of situations they would deal with. If I didn’t know how they went about a situation I would ask a question about it. The replies I got back not only were perfect for my assignment and very much so detailed, but they also serve as a guide for me as a designer. Their answers are somewhat motivating and inspirational. When deciding on how to present this assignment, I had no idea how I wanted to present it. In the end I decided I would have a go at making a similar design to their iconic burger made of paper, but instead I would have mine open like a book and flick through the layers to see each question and answer. I knew that my design would be no where near their creations, but I also wanted to give it a go to see how tricky it was. They make it look so easy, and I can sure as hell tell you it wasn’t. It was rather frustrating and I praise them even more now, knowing how hard it is to perfect designs using the mediums they use. I tried many different glues from standard glue, stickey tape, tiny nosel glue and a glue gun. All of them seemed to be very messy to work with, and the design kept falling apart, but in the end the glue gun worked the best as it dried fast and I was able to do more with the time I had saved from using it. So far I believe that this is my favorite assignment, as I am a very hands on designer, so although the process was frustrating, I enjoyed bing able to create something with my hands
