Over his 80-year-long carer, Chinese American artist Tyrus Wong 黃齊耀(1910-) has created paintings, ceramics, greeting cards, kites, and the concept drawings that were the inspiration for Disney’s animated classic “Bambi.” Born in Guangdong, he left his mother and sister at age nine, traveling to the United States with his father in 1919. They settled in Los Angeles’ Chinatown, and he attended Otis College of Art and Design while also learning traditional Chinese art from his father at home. Wong was active as an artist, exhibiting work at a 1932 group exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago, and was hired as part of the Federal Arts Project. Along with fellow artists, they produced the wall-to-wall murals and hand-painted menus for LA’s Dragon’s Den, a trendy Chinatown restaurant.

In 1938, Wong took a job at the Walt Disney Studios where his Chinese-inspired paintings and sketches of deer in a forest caught the attention of Walt Disney, and become the basis for the visual style of the feature film, “Bambi.” He later worked for Warner Brothers as a production illustrator and sketch artist and stayed there until his retirement in 1968. After retiring, he designed and built hand-made kites, including 100-foot centipedes, flocks of swallow, and butterflies. He still flies his kites every month in Santa Monica.
