I think canon and fanon really underestimates how much the pilot boys can handle mechanics. Like sure, they're not Hunk and Pidge, but they have to understand how their machines work. Lance, especially, is shown to want nothing but to fly, while what we see of Keith and Shiro they like flying but they're never shown to be so obsessively driven as Lance. He's a pilot nerd. He's going to want to understand the machine he's flying. If nothing else so he can understand the diagonistics while flying. Plane shaking = hydrolics are out. They might not know how to fix tthings, but they likely have a good idea what the issue is. Especially when you fly one machine all the time, you start being able to go "it was doing this again, it probably means that needs tuning up again".
