The Lotus Etna concept of 1984 was an Italdesign proposal for a V8-engined successor to the Esprit, also the work of Giugiaro. It used an expanded Esprit platform but the precarious financial position of Lotus meant the project was put on hold. When General Motors took a controlling stake in Lotus in 1986, the Etna was cancelled.
The Fiat 132 Aster Concept was a futuristic coupe designed by Giuseppe Mittino for Zagato in 1972. First presented in green at the Turin Motor Show and then again at the Geneva Motor Show with some modifications in March 1973, finished in orange. Both Aster prototypes were built on the mechanical components of the 2.0-litre Fiat 132 with Zagato bodywork in aluminium. The Aster never progressed beyond the prototype stage.

The Fiat X1/9 was designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone, going on sale in 1972. In 1982, the car became the Bertone X1/9 with full production moving to Bertone. Fiat withdrew from the US market in 1982, so sales of the Bertone X1/9 in the US transferred to International Automobile Importers Inc. As US sales declined, in 1987 Bertone experimented with a fully convertible Bertone X1/9 Spider. The model failed to progress beyond the prototype stage; sales of the targa top model ended in 1989

Designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone and first presented at the 1969 Geneva Motor Show, the BMW 2800 Spicup was a proposal for a targa-style sports car. The name is a portmanteau of “spider” and “coupé.” The concept was based on a shortened BMW E3 platform. The roof panels slid out from a compartment in the roll bar.
The Saab EV-1 was a 1985 concept car (EV = Experimental Vehicle) based on a Saab 900 Turbo 16. It was a fully operational prototype with Kevlar and carbon fibre bodywork and a 282hp version of Saab’s DOHC 1985cc 4-cylinder engine. Features included solar panels in the roof to power the air-conditioning. Presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the EV-1 never made it into Saab’s showrooms.
Carrozzeria Francis Lombardi had been established in the immediate post-WW2 period and built up a successful coachbuilding business mostly based on modified Fiats. For the 1970 Turin Motor Show, they prepared a sports car using VW Beetle underpinnings. Their Volkswagen 1600 SS was a wedge-shaped coupé with a low nose and concealed headlamps. It remained a one-off. Lombardi closed its doors in 1973.
