Final

Through out the entire process of making this film I have learned, and accomplished a lot with the support of my classmates, and the professors. One thing that I was capable of doing is becoming a problem solver when problems came up during production, and post-production. While there was many difficulties I was able to find ways to work around them to complete the film to the best of my ability. Another thing that I was able to do for this film is understand more about what areas I need to work on in order to improve on making my film, as well as other people film. The next project I will make sure that everything is finalized to the detail giving myself and my team a stronger sense of the vision that I want for projects to come. When making this short film I realized that during post-production you sometime don’t have enough footage to allow you more flexibility to complete the film during editing, and next project I am going to make sure that the imagery that is needed for the film is strong but also enough in order to allow changes during post-production. The making of this short film has taught me a lot, and I know that the next one will be stronger.

I plan to color my film making sure that it stay a warmer color tone through out the entire short. film. This way it complements the earth color clothing that my cast is wearing. The hardest coloring is going to be for the scene outside at the benches that are overlooking the city. There are moments where it’s dark and the colors are not as visible. I do also have to make the bench scene in daylight to show make the background more appealing to the eye, and keeping the realistic look out the day for the scene.

Post-Production

The feedback for my rough cut is that I needed to include more for the ending, and the scenes where my main character works on improving his english. For this reason I had to do reshoots to get more footage, although with the extra footage after the reshoots it flowed a lot better. I plan to smooth out the ending and shortening the beginning as it goes a little to long. I will also be editing the montage to match with the beats of the song to make it more appealing to watch.

Post Shoot Analysis

The things that went well on my shoot is how my crew collaborated really well, and helped one another when challenges arose. Another thing that went really well is the location, and the production design that helped make the film more complete as a whole. We were able to get all our shots with some time to spare. The challenges that came up were that the day before two of my actors had informed me that they were not able to participate in the making of the film. I was luckily able to use one of two crew mates too instead for the roles. On the second day of filming we only had the location for four hours which meant we were on a time crunch trying to fly through each set up and shot. This made things difficult when it came to editing because we were didn’t have enough footage for the ending of my film. Classic Mexican guitar instrumentals are a huge influence on my film using a slow sad piece for the beginning and a faster more upbeat songs for the ending.

The Challenges

Some current challenges for my short film are the location, and the actors. While I look for actors specifically Latinx actors it seems to be a small pool of people which gives me a smaller selection of who I want to see in my short film. The location is also something that has become difficult because finding something that fits what you imagine can be difficult when taking many things into account such as finances, space, etc.

Artist Statement

The vision for this film is to be able to connect with people who have struggled in high school, letting them know that they are never alone. My short film follows a student who immigrated to the United States from Mexico, not knowing the English language. This language gap caused him to feel alone, anxious, and uncertain of who he is. I am nervous about if people will be able to connect to the character in some sort of way. I am exited to tell this story because its based on the feeling and struggles my father grew up having as he went through the same experience.
