The Adventures Of KnockbackX: Episode Won
Episode Won Transcript
Welcome to the first Minecraft adventures of KnockbackX. This initial video, and the ones to immediately follow, will be tests of ideas conceptualized by KBX. One of these concepts is to have original music composed by his friend, and fellow Minecrafter, Catfish Jones. This electronic narrator is another concept that these first shows will attempt to prove, and then refine. Lastly, mister X truly loves Minecraft videos, and thought it would be fun to try. He hopes you like them. Pressing F5 zooms the view out behind the player, pressing it again switches to a frontal third person view. Pressing the F5 button a third time returns the view to first person. It appears KBX has chosen a spot for his dwelling, but he will need those tools to begin work on it. Pressing the E button will open the inventory H U D. You can see the log blocks in the inventory area at the bottom of the display, as well as the various other parts of the H U D. From top left to right these parts are; player armor slots, the player image, and then the personal crafting window. At the very bottom of the HUD are the quick inventory access slots. These can be loaded up with items, and accessed using either the mouse scroll wheel, or the top row of numbers on your keyboard. As you saw, KBX first converted his wood to planks, and then made a crafting table. That table has a 3x3 crafting window as opposed to the 2x2 personal crafting window in the inventory display. That table may be placed anywhere, and used to craft better items. We also saw the conversion of planks to sticks. We now see the usefulness of those sticks as they make up the handles to our tools. Each tool has it's own use; shovel for dirt, axe for wood, and pick for stone. Don't forget to look up at the sun as your day progresses, to see how much time you have left. It looks like it's almost mid day, but we can't think about food yet. Our hunger meter, and the bottom on the right, is still full, as is our health meter on the bottom left. I did see some pigs running around, but there is yet much to do before nightfall. As items drop, you'll find they collect in your inventory and may be re-placed in practically any configuration you choose. There are some exceptions, but we will get in to those at a later time. If your inventory is empty, new items will begin to fill your active inventory. Highlight one of those to put it in your hand, and right click to place or use the item. For now, Knockback has a nice little hobbit hole dug out, and has begun constructing the outer wall with some of the dirt that has dropped. You may find that, when digging, you accumulate much more dirt than one could ever possibly use. There are ways to both store these excess blocks, or destroy the ones that you will really never use. That too will come later, if we can survive the first night. You may notice that the wooden tools dig or pick a bit slowly, and break too soon. Tools made of better materials, will work faster, and will last longer. Working with what he has before him, KnockbackX is beginning to have a growing space that one wants on a dark night. After clearing some space, we see that it is far too dark in the cave to work. This is why KBX pokes a hole in his roof, allowing for a shaft of daylight to illuminate the dwelling's interior. He can then see to clear a greater area, possibly uncovering natural coal, or, if he is really lucky, iron ore. Both could be found in the first layers stone underneath the surface. The more precious ores, Redstone, Gold, and Diamonds, are much deeper in the ground. Since the worlds are randomly generated, we were lucky to find this hill next to a river. Some areas have natural caves or sink-holes which can be rich in those exposed minerals. But all things in time. Alternating between shovel and pick, KBX is looking for natural coal to use as a source of furnace fuel, and also for torchlight. This work will also serve two purposes, in hunting for coal and clearing out a space to work. As Knockback chips out the last bit of stone, it's becoming clear that we aren't going to be lucky with the coal right off. However, even without finding anything, There is a sizely cavern emerging around us. Again, It's important for Knockback to keep his mind on the time. He does not want to spend too much time inside as day is quickly escaping. Even though coal is important, when the dwelling is just big enough, he finds it's time to give up the search, and goes out to gather the other resources he will need for the night ahead. After checking the sun, and grabbing up the saplings from the tree he chopped down earlier, KBX has decided to gather wood to make into charcoal. While outside, it's usually a good idea to keep looking for those natural caves and sunken areas that may be nearby. It’s advised to inspect the edges of these sunken areas. You want to be sure of your exit before jumping headlong into an unexplored cave area. This cave has two sides, which can be dangerous. One should be careful of monsters that like to lurk in the shadows of these caves. It does seem that both sides of this cave are dark and empty, at least of goodies, but we had to look. Let's head up and gather a little more wood. Since we didn't find any natural coal, each log block will be cooked into charcoal to aid in our survival. All four types of wood burn the same, though saplings burn much quicker than logs, which themselves burn quicker than coal or charcoal. They all four also make the same tools, however the planks each produce differ in color from one tree type to another. Said differences in wood color don't go much farther. The half blocks transition, and perhaps stairs translate the original wood color, but tools and doors still only have the original oak shade. We now observe KnockBackX breaking out leaf blocks. As these leaf blocks decay or are broken, they drop saplings as we saw earlier. They also have a small chance to drop apples which would certainly help our soon to be rumbling tummy. But still there is other business. Now that He has some cobblestone, some logs, and some other resources, Knockback can begin to craft stronger tools and more use-full objects. He'll first clear an immediate working area, picking up the dropped seeds for later use. Firstly, he will use his cobblestone to make a furnace for his home. This will be the mechanism that will let him cook wood into charcoal. It also serves as an oven to turn raw food into cooked food. There is a lot of wood in his inventory, but as long as there are a few logs left to cook down into charcoal, He should be safe to use some for crafting. After all of the oak lumber has been refined, and the birch saved, It looks like KBX is next going to craft a wooden farming hoe. This will allow him to till soil for wheat planting. There are enough sticks left to make some stone tools. It's usually a good idea to craft a stronger set of tools as soon as you can. Instead of waiting for the old ones to break, then going and crafting new ones, Knockback has chosen to craft a full set of stone tools at one sitting. Though time intensive, it should pay off for him soon. This is also a good time to position your most important items in the active inventory row along the bottom. As Knockback finishes the last of his daytime crafting, he has deduced his last outside chores for the day. Because it takes time to grow, and it helps in the herding of animals, we should make our wheat garden as the sun begins to slide down the western sky. Regarding wheat seed, breaking the tall grass drops seeds, but not consistently every time. As it takes three wheat to make one bread, you will want at least three wheat seeds. More is nice for herding and breeding livestock. Right clicking with the hoe will till the soil, and being near water will irrigate that it into rich wet tilled soil, which is perfect for growing a crop of wheat. if it doesn't irrigate quickly, or is not planted on soon, the tilled soil will revert back to a short grass block. Once you have growing wheat it becomes fairly self-sustaining. You gain seeds as well as wheat when harvesting. And after re-planting, there are usually leftover seeds to store. Will still need another wheat if we want to herd and breed these animals. If you choose to, you can break the block the grass is attached to, and it will pop the seeds off with the same random chance to drop as breaking the grass. Now with that last elusive seed, KBX will plant it in it's logical spot. By looking at the sun dipping in the west, we can tell that it's about time to head indoors and make sure our dwelling is secure. You may notice Knockback checking the sky from time to time. Until you make a clock, which requires gold and redstone, this is the best way to be aware of the time outside. Leaving a gap in the door, and in the roof hole, we can check on the progress of time, without risking an unwelcome visitor dropping in on us. And we certainly wouldn't want that. Now that all we can do is wait out the night, this is the best time for crafting. It's also a good time to properly lay out your work area. After placing His furnace and workbench, Knockback Ex can begin making charcoal. This kindling will burn quickly, so Knockback will want to be ready to fuel his fire. These saplings will make the first lump, and that lump will be used to make the others. This feels very wasteful, but since we have plenty more trees we will use these first logs as coal until we find some in the ground. Notice the fuel goes in the bottom of the furnace, and the raw material goes in the top. The fire represents how long your fuel is lasting, while the progress arrow shows how fast your item is being created. These logs are slowly changing into charcoal, and we're just about ready to move on to the next step. Since we need all of this charcoal, we will tend this furnace until it is complete. While the crafting table, and likewise the personal crafting window, will expel un-used items upon closing, the furnace allows one to walk away while it's cooking without affecting item creation. This allows for multiple furnaces if you are cooking down large stacks. As you can imagine, it also uses immense amounts of fuel. There are many things you can smelt in the furnace, including cactus, ores, meats, cobblestone, logs, sand, and much more. When his coal is done, Knockback will throw some stone on there to use up the last remaining fire. That cobble will melt back into the stone you broke it from, and it's progress is unimportant. Check back on later. Now we can use that charcoal we made, combined with sticks, to make torches. These will light up the night while you work. Also monsters will spawn in darkness that is twenty-five blocks away from the player. That means if your house is too big, and dark, you may spend the night fighting zombies instead of crafting. For a full smelt chart, as well as crafting recipes and even a company history, check the Wiki. It is the closest thing to a player’s guide that exists. As we wind down this episode, it's clear Knockback Ex has built a sufficient dwelling to survive. This is nice, but there are still a lot of things to show you. While this episode may appear to be short, it really exists as functional proof of KnockBackX's initial concept. Should these videos be received well, many more should then follow. This initial series was designed as an introduction to Minecraft for those who are uninitiated. They will get more complex as it goes forward I'm sure. For now, we hope that this series entertains everyone who enjoys Minecraft, and introduces the joy of it to anyone who may as yet be unaware of it's awesomeness.
