[Hello everyone! I will be at AnimeNEXT Thursday through Monday and I’m not sure what my internet situation will be like. Replies will be either few and far between or completely on hold until I get back home! I’ll see you all again soon!]
✧ shroud
Liu moved through bloodied and frenzied streets in the dark, in silence. His work had trained him for this at least, even if the “zombies” had never been a part of it. He knew about mob mentality and mind control, which was something similar. Whatever. The carnage was nothing he had to worry or care about, as long as it didn’t involve people of importance.
Damn the power going out. He couldn’t get his phone to work in district alpha, in sector one, or sector two. It was only when he slipped past the boundaries of sector three that he picked up a signal, and immediately he started sending out messages. Should his targets be stuck in a powerless sector, a phone call wasn’t going to get through—and it was too time consuming at that.
To: Kid From: Liu Yee get out of your trees and meet me somewhere
He sent more than one more often than not. Better be specific than sorry, not that he put any effort into typing at all.
To: Kid From: Liu Yee are you in sector four
To: Kid From: Liu Yee stay safe or ill kill you myself
And then he’d wait for an answer, still aiming for the next sector ahead.
Hibiki didn't know how to handle situations like these. He'd been in some bad situations before, but none of them really compared to this. He didn't have powers anymore and he didn't have any weapons. He was completely defenseless, but he wanted to find Liu as soon as possible. He couldn't just hide without knowing if the few friends he'd made in this city were okay.
His phone lit up with a new message pretty quickly, while there was still power in his sector. Two more messages followed it, and Hibiki opened them quickly.
To: Old Man From: Hibiki Kiryu I'm in four, where are you? I can meet you outside the apartments.
Hibiki hit send and sent a few more messages out to the people he'd befriended in the city, asking if they were okay. He was nervous about going outside without a weapon, so he grabbed a knife from one of the drawers in the kitchen before leaving. It was just a simple butter knife, but it made him feel more secure than he would've if he had nothing at all.
Nervously, Hibiki left his apartment. The worst of things still hadn't reached his sector, but he still kept to the darkest shadows and hoped he wouldn't be seen in the dim light. He only left them once he spotted Liu. He silently ran to him, then tried to pull Liu into a tight hug. "I'm so glad you're okay," Hibiki said.
To: Kid From: Liu Yee Why did you text me if it's none of my business.
To: Old Man From: Hibiki Kiryu bcause im' lonlyy right now nad i wnat too tlak to you
To: Kid From: Liu Yee I still don't believe you. Aren't you ten? How did you get it?

Trees
The panic in that voice was more satisfying than he imagined. Liu wore a genuine, subdued smile when he turned halfway back, enough to clearly see Hibiki again. "Yeah? You’re that eager to talk to me now? I’ve never been that good at conversation, so I don’t know what you’re expecting." Of course, that smile worked its way back into a smirk. He was less able than Hibiki to disguise how he really felt: startlingly pleased.
"My day was all right. Work wasn’t exciting. I haven’t been assigned to stalk anyone as boring or unaware as you were, at least. Don’t even try to say you noticed me before you headed out to the bank."
"Or do you prefer climbing trees in the dark?"
Hibiki was relieved when Liu turned back. Maybe he wouldn't get abandoned after all. Maybe he could work this out. "I like talking to you anyway," Hibiki said, not having to fake his bright smile. "I'm not expecting much, just talk."
When Liu started speaking, Hibiki didn't focus as carefully as he should have. He half listened to what Liu was saying and half tried to think of a way to say 'help me' without saying 'help me'. He at least paid enough attention to catch Liu calling him boring. "I'm very interesting and I was very aware," he said with a frown, "I noticed you ages before that." That was a lie and Liu would totally know it, but oh well.
"Look, I just..." Hibiki started out, but quickly shut up once he heard the branch he was stepping on crack. It didn't crack all the way through, but just enough to make a noise and make Hibiki very nervous.
"Hey, so while you're here..." Hibiki quickly started again, staring down at the branch under his feet. "Do you want to... uh... assist me with something? It's kind of important." That was the best he could do.
To: Kid From: Liu Yee I don't believe you. Did you get in an accident? Break into someone's alcohol cabinet?

Maybe Hibiki was stupid for trusting Liu so much. He never expected Liu to hurt him since they became friends, even after everything that happened in Kisaragi. But now, Liu had stabbed him, and Hibiki was completely speechless.
"You..." Hibiki coughed up blood, staring wide-eyed at Liu. "I thought..." He could barely breathe and he was shaking. "Aren't we friends?"

Trees
That was cute. The anticipated downplaying took over the moment Liu was in view. He crossed his arms casually even as his expression sharpened. The kid wouldn’t get out of this easily. Liu wouldn’t let him.
"Really. You didn’t seem like a big fan of the outdoors back in Kisaragi," he taunted, only just barely keeping out the detail of ‘I followed you around enough to know’. Hibiki was well aware he’d been stalked back then; he’d called Liu out on it when they first met. "I’m fine. But hey, don’t let me spoil your fun. I can find something else to do if you’re having the time of your life up there." Turning, he raised his hand to give a backwards wave over his shoulder. "See you."
He’d enjoy seeing the kid’s pride crack enough to call him back.
Hibiki kept forcing that smile. It was probably obvious that it was fake, but he hoped Liu couldn't tell from the distance. "Oh, I'm a huge fan of the outdoors," Hibiki lied, "I just lost interest in it for a while why you were stalking me. I was too creeped out to climb any trees." He patted a nearby tree branch again. He was really trying to sell his love of nature.
As soon as Liu turned away, Hibiki started to panic. "Wait!" He called out without thinking, and then paused for a moment to try to calm down. He was not going to get abandoned in this tree. He could handle this situation. "I'm... I'm not done talking to you yet, don't leave. How was your day?" He was still stalling, and still clinging to the tree. This was getting more and more uncomfortable.
Trees
Stranger things had happened in this city. He wasn’t even going to question it.
(All right, he probably would. Eventually.)
Passing through sector six’s strange mix of genuine plant life and the usual city amenities led him near the tree his former enemy had decided to climb. Liu wasn’t the first person to pass by, so he wasn’t the one given the sugary-sweet request for help. However, the man that had been the target waved away the request and hurried on his way, leaving the area open for Liu to step in where he’d stood. Spotting Hibiki from there, he smirked.
"Having fun? I didn’t know climbing trees was one of your hobbies." He’d wait to see if Hibiki bothered to ask him for help, too. Somehow he doubted it, but anytime he heard that phrase from the kid was another victory.
Hibiki's first attempt to get help didn't go so well. The man he spoke to just hurried away. He didn't even seem to consider offering any help. Hibiki sighed heavily and rested his forehead on the branch in front of him. He was stuck here forever now. He was going to die in this tree. It was the end for him.
When he heard a familiar voice, Hibiki looked down again. Liu was the last person he wanted to see right now, unfortunately. This was more than a little humiliating. Liu was his friend, but he still didn't want to have to ask him for help.
"Oh hey," Hibiki said, forcing a smile. "Yeah, I'm having lots of fun. I love trees." Hibiki awkwardly patted one of the branches. "Trees are great." He knew he needed to think of a way to ask for help without asking for help, but he couldn't. Clearly, it was time to start stalling. "How are you?" Hibiki asked.
Trees
All Hibiki wanted to do was a save a cat he saw stuck in a tree. He never intended to get stuck himself. Unfortunately, he realized half-way up the tree that he couldn't get down and he couldn't get any higher up either. The branch he needed to step down onto was snapped in half, and there weren't any others within his reach. He should've just called the fire department.
It would've been useless anyway, because the cat quickly revealed herself to be a shape-shifter who was perfectly capable of getting out of the tree on her own. She laughed when she saw Hibiki stuck there and turned into a bird and fluttered away.
Hibiki was still stuck with no way to get down. 'How high am I right now?' he wondered, looking down at the sidewalk below him. 'I am really high. High as balls.' He kept waiting for someone to pass by that could help him, but he wasn't on a very busy street so not too many people passed by.
Hibiki waited for a while, clinging to a wide branch, until someone finally passed by the tree. "Hey," he called out, "Can you help me get down? I'm stuck." He smiled at them and hoped they'd try to help instead of hurrying away from some weird guy in a tree.
Loss [Liu]
He didn’t think what Hibiki added to the conversation had any merit at first. He hadn’t lost a parent; he’d lost a lover of a handful of months. It was superficial to compare the experiences, but—
—when he thought of the mornings he woke up and expected to find someone beside him, only to feel empty space—
"I see. I heard about that from Nöla. Briefly." It wasn’t really that brief. He just tuned out a short way into the explanation and made an excuse to hang up on her before she finished. He hadn’t needed to know his target’s life story in order to tail him effectively. "I suppose you understand more than it seemed like a few minutes ago."
Liu didn’t meet the kid’s gaze. He wasn’t denying more of these statements, even if they struck closer to home.
Hibiki didn't know Liu knew anything about his parents. It was nice that he wouldn't ever have to explain things if Liu already knew. Even if Liu only knew the absolute basics, that was good enough. He just didn't want to have to explain what happened if he didn't need to.
"I don't understand exactly how you feel, but I understand losing people," Hibiki said, "And I'm here for you if you need anything." Hibiki didn't think Liu would look his way any time soon, so he just focused on the sidewalk ahead of them. "Even if you just want to be distracted, I can help you out. It's nice to forget they're gone sometimes."
