Why Do Cartoon Villains Speak in Foreign Accents?
Before reading this article, I never made the connections about the accents used in the film Lion King. I watched it tons of times as a child but to point it out how Scar’s accent is british, I realized I never batted an eye about that fact. I think it is maybe cause of the fact that other shows or movies did it too, it made it normal and made use the viewers, numb to it. It is also interesting that also pick accents from people of the lower class. I have noticed before, that I do make assumptions of people based on how they speak whether its intentional or not. I don’t think they should continue using “foreign” accents to portray these characters unless they do derive from that area. I think it is also interesting that all of these most of these films are from the viewpoint of americans generally. This shows that there needs to more diversity in the industry and most of the time the creators are just white cis males.
