Adam stared into the sweeping fingers of fire, his mind flickering with it. A strength rose and fell in those eyes, a power I had increasingly come to know.
Ever since I was young, I'd felt a connection to my friend; a yearning to help him. Pieces of his mind had been walled off since his parents died, and I knew he would never be whole, not until he faced down whatever burned him up inside.
But that wasn't the whole truth; we both knew it wasn't. Because I had my own secret... that my yearnings stretched beyond a superficial helpfulness...into deep places I dare not speak.
As his sweat glistened in the light of the fire, and the outline of his muscles bulged under his shirt, I couldn't help but wonder why the universe saw fit to torture me with ideas I never, ever asked for.
Why would God let such nightmares masquerade as tantalizing dreams?

There is a mine for silver
And the rocks with golden core.
Iron is taken from the earth,
And copper smelted from the ore.
Mortals end the soft darkness;
They search the depths of their craft;
They must find ore in the blackness;
Leave their dwellings to cut the shaft.
---
In places untouched by human feet;
Far from others they ride the gyre.
The earth, from which all food comeths,
Is transformed below as if by fire.
Lapis lazuli lines its rocks,
And its dust contains nuggets of gold.
No bird of prey knows that hidden path,
No falcon’s eye has seen it unfold.
Proud beasts do not set foot on it,
No lion dare prowl those dead lands.
Splice the flinty rock with their palms
Lay bare the tight roots of all headlands.
They must tunnel through the rock;
Their eyes see treasures shining bright.
They search the sources of the rivers
And bring the hidden things to light.
