Get to know, JOSIE DEL CASTILLO
"Josie Del Castillo was born and raised in Brownsville, Texas where she is currently pursuing a Bachelors of Arts at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. For the past three years she has been involved in twenty-two exhibitions and won numeral awards such as “Best 2D” in the 24th Student Juried Show held at the Rusteberg Art Gallery, as well as the “Octavia Arnerson Award” at the 43rd International Art Show held at the Brownsville Fine Arts Museum. She has exhibited her work in several museums and galleries in Brownsville, San Benito, Mcallen and Edinburg.
Her most recent work consists of figurative and portraiture of people she is familiar with, while her other pieces focus on a playful subject matter. She enjoys exploring the different types of wood by either cutting it into organic shapes or revealing some of its grain. The majority of her portraiture work vary from different backgrounds since she enjoys exploring different techniques such as marbling, palette knifing and glazes. She finds portraiture the strongest way to connect with her audience by creating direct contact with them. Some of her paintings try to depict strong emotions, whether is self-acceptance, or the struggle of being unable to express a certain thought. Her idea of art is more than the process of making it, but the emotion it provokes to the viewer. Art can mean and be so many things, but it’s what both the artist and viewer get out of it that matters the most."
