Civilization and its Discontents According to Ben Tolman
http://socks-studio.com/2015/03/08/civilization-and-its-discontents-according-to-ben-tolman/
The hyper-detailed ink-on-paper drawings by Ben Tolman depict the built environment and the effects it has on the people who inhabit it. Cities (City, 2013) and suburbs (Suburbs, 2012), skyscrapers stripped off of their outer walls (Urban, 2015) or rows of one-bedroom houses, fictional or real,…

The city nowadays can be seen as a huge, continuous, dusty construction site.
Temporary on buildings, permanent in the cities, scaffoldings and steel profiles are the new modules and columns that shape the rhythm of streets. White and aggressively colored curtains are moved by the wind on the outer skin of buildings. Giant and pornographic top-models hide the uncertainties and flaws of facade.
Historic buildings are like those old, ridiculous women who don’t accept their wrinkles and continuously restore themselves with make-up. Scaffoldings and cranes are the bisturi of cities, contemporary architecture is plastic surgery for buildings. Probably the best thing we have produced so far is this secondary city made of prefabricated, shiny, temporary elements, that indifferently adapts to churches, monuments, empty areas, curvy curtain walls and sharp edges, creating the elusive and at the same time immutable background of our life.
