found out that the word for sneeze in cantonese is 打乞嗤 daa2hat1ci1 which is similar to tagalog hatsing and i think my brain has made a correlation there

its cool how languages have similar words for things even if theyre from different language families!!! maybe the sound influences the word or smth 🤔

i'm free (temporarily) from other academics sry for the inactivity huhu but for my last cantonese class of the semester i learned some slang and my favourite ones rn are

☆ 一舊舊舊 jat1gau6gau6gau6/1999 = incomprehensible/doesn't make sense (because 1999 is a homophone for "lumps" so when u dont understand somebody they're speaking in lumps)

☆ 摺拉吧 zip3laai1baa2 = stuck [studying] in the library (the word for library is 圖書館 tou4syu1gun2, 拉吧 laai1ba2 is university slang)

☆ 阿乜水 aa3mat1seoi2 = term of address for someone whose name u dont know (its not rude exactly but it's not polite either)

learning slang and colloquialisms i think is the hardest part of language learning bc theyre usually dynamic and change quickly but it's still fun all the same o(≧▽≦)o

randomly understood a cantonese sentence out of a video i was watching and i think its because it sounded a little similar to mandarin

cantonese: 你好我要三蘢蝦餃 (nei5hou5 ngo5 jiu3 saam1 lung4 haa1gaau2)

mandarin: 你好我要三笼虾饺 (nǐhǎo wǒ yào sān lóng xiājiǎo)

english: hi i want 3 lobster dumplings

Cantonese has 6 tone contours and 9 tones ╰┈➤ tones 7-9 correspond to tones 1, 3 and 6 respectively, but are only for words ending in "-t", "-k" and "-p" ╰┈➤ i.e. they are entering tones

The written "letter" form of Cantonese words is a bit different to English ╰┈➤ some letters may not be pronounced the same as their English counterparts ╰┈➤ jyutping is also not the only romanisation method used for Cantonese! I just use it here because it's the one I'm learning in
