Aomine is sitting at a table in Majiba, peeling the plastic lid off of his soft drink to check if there’s any soda worth fishing for hidden under the ice cubes, when Kuroko looks up from his vanilla shake and opens his mouth and asks, “So, what do you and Kagami-kun have planned for Valentine’s Day?”
It’s enough of a surprise for Aomine that he drops his lid. “What? When?”
“Tomorrow.”
“It’s tomorrow?”
There’s a visible change in Kuroko’s eyes—something that flipped quickly from wariness to open exasperation. “Oh, you’re kidding me, Aomine-kun,” he groans, closing his eyes and pinching at the bridge of his nose.
“I didn’t completely forget. I just put it out of my mind,” Aomine says, trying to regain some of his dignity by nodding as he speaks. He pushes his cup to the side and continues, “Besides, Kagami told me not to get him anything.”
Kuroko raises an eyebrow, and Aomine notices that strangely enough, he still doesn’t look reassured yet. “So?”
“So, that means I didn’t have to worry about taking time out of today to find something for him. I mean, he made it sound like we’d just treat it as any other day. I don’t really care, either way. We’ll probably just play basketball or make out or…yeah.” He trails off with a shrug.
There’s a moment of reasonably awkward silence, where Aomine notices nervously that Kuroko hasn’t moved a muscle since he finished speaking. It takes a good minute before Kuroko closes his eyes slowly and forces himself to take a deep, slow breath.
“Aomine-kun, I would like to push you off a cliff,” he finally deadpans.
Kuroko’s blunt speech never fails to surprise. It takes him a second before Aomine even manages to recover enough to glare back, genuinely offended. “Look, I don’t—”
“You do understand that people just say those things, right? They don’t actually mean them.”
“Well, yeah, most people, but this is Kagami, he’s not like that.”
“And you’re completely sure?”
“I—”
“What if he does turn up with a present and you’re empty handed, what will you do then?”
Aomine groans. “The hell do you want me to do then?”
Kuroko leans back and nods sagely.
“Get him something.”
“Even though he said not to?”
“Even then.”
“Specifically said not to.”
“I understand that.”
“Tetsu, that’s just going to annoy him, you know how he gets. I’m sure it’ll just be fine if I don’t get him anything.”
“I can promise you that he’s going to get you something, no matter how small, and you’ll be empty handed in return. I can expect that you don’t want that type of situations on your hands, do you, Aomine-kun?”
“Well no, but I mean…he…he did tell me not to get him anything.”
“He was only saying that to be considerate.”
“…Kagami. Considerate. Of me.”
“Look.” For the first time in a while, Aomine sees Kuroko’s eyes dart towards him in a short-tempered glare that it makes him lean back inconspicuously in his seat at the memory of basketballs rocketing across the court and hitting him in the face with uneasy accuracy. “I understand that Kagami-kun told you not to get anything. Everyone does that though, and most people have enough common sense to be able to see that much at least.” Aomine opens his mouth to complain, but Kuroko holds up a hand. “Since I’ve already been well acquainted with just how poor your observational skills are, I can’t say I’m surprised that you didn’t manage to see this. He was only saying it to be nice and not pressure you into getting him a gift, but you would be the world’s worst example of human scum if you didn’t get him a single thing at all.”
“But he said—” Aomine begins weakly, only to have Kuroko give him a final stare over the completely chewed out tip of his straw (a tic of his, Aomine had noticed long ago, that meant he was irritated beyond belief) as he stood up from his spot.
“It’s not my relationship, I don’t have the final say.” A pause, as he pushes in his chair and sighs wearily. “Really though, just don’t screw this up, please, for everyone’s sake.”
—-
And like always, Aomine found himself taking what Kuroko said to heart as he cautiously stared at Kagami from his position on the couch that night. Everything had been perfectly normal so far—a quick peck on the lips when he arrived, ordered to wait in the living room while Kagami scrambled together whatever he could find in the fridge or pantry for dinner, and then sifting through cases of movies that they’ve watched tens of times before for the one that would irritate them the least.
“So, how was your day today?” he heard Kagami calling from in the kitchen, and Aomine drops the DVD case in panic.
“It was a great Thursday!” he blurts.
It goes oddly quiet in the kitchen. Kagami’s head pokes around the corner a beat after, eyebrows drawn in suspicious worry.
“…You alright there?”
Aomine nods, clenching his jaw as his eyes continue darting around the room, searching for any hiding places that Kagami could have stuffed a present. “No, nothing, it’s fine. I just—I just love Thursdays, man, you know me. Biggest Thursday lover in Asia. It’s such a great day.” Not under the table, behind the potted plant, maybe behind the television? But wouldn’t Kagami be suspicious if he checks there?
Why the hell is he doing this anyway, really? Kuroko can be wrong sometimes.
“You never told me you liked Thursdays so much,” Kagami says slowly, “But are you just saying that because it’s Valentine’s Day?”
Aomine is not proud to say that he burst into the most nervous and hysterical laughter before waving his hand dismissively with gestures that wouldn’t have fooled anybody. He finds himself speaking so fast he nearly stumbles over his words, “I didn’t know you were so keen on Valentine’s Day, not after you said that you didn’t really want to do anything for it, right? Like, it wasn’t important? So you…you didn’t care? No presents, remember, that was your idea. Just in case if you forgot or anything…yeah…you know just…yeah, something silly like that.”
There’s definitely obvious suspicion in Kagami’s stare when he looks at him now, and Aomine feels himself at the edge of stomping across the room and grabbing Kagami by his shoulders and shaking him and demanding for him to spill if he bought a present or not. He restrains himself, though—if Kagami didn’t buy one, then he’d just be freaking him out or pissing him off by doing that, and present or not it was Valentine’s Day, which meant he had to play nice.
“Valentine’s Day’s fine,” Kagami finally answers with a small shrug that nearly sends inner-Aomine into a state of panic again. “You’re right though, nothing too special.”
No words can describe Aomine’s relief.
“Nothing special. Yeah. That’s great, because I—”
“Except I was out and ran into Midorima earlier today. He gave me my lucky item in passing for some reason, said that I’d need it.” Kagami pulls out a can of deodorant and shows it to Aomine with raised eyebrows. “Think he was trying to tell me something?”
Aomine snorted, spirits finally lifted to the point where he could smile easily. “Hey, don’t expect the truth from me.” Kagami snorts at him before rolling his eyes and throwing the can, watching Aomine reach up and catch it with wide eyes.
“You just ran out, didn’t you? Take it, I can’t use it anyway. The coach banned Axe from the locker rooms because Kiyoshi and Izuki always used too much, and apparently the smell gives her a headache now.” Aomine turns the can to look at the brand before looking back up at Kagami in panic.
“The hell is this supposed to be?” he finally demanded.
Kagami’s easy smile disappeared slowly when he realized how serious Aomine sounded and he frowned defensively. “Deodorant? You need some, I have some? Jeeze, no need to say thanks.” He rolls his eyes and is about to step back around the corner to check on the soup when fingers suddenly clamp down on his wrist. Kagami turns, bewildered, to see Aomine staring at him with a locked jaw and a faintly betrayed set of his mouth.
“Kagami,” he says, slowly, “I can’t accept this.”
Kagami would be lying if he said he wasn’t surprised. “You…what?”
“This Valentine’s Day present. I can’t accept it.”
“…W…hat? This’s just—”
“I can’t. I’m sorry. We agreed, beforehand, that we wouldn’t give each other gifts, and I’m not going to let you back out on that promise.”
“But this isn’t a present, it’s just fu—”
“Deodorant. I know. It’s not your best, I’ll admit, but I admire the sentiment.” Kagami looks stunned, mouth nearly dropping open as Aomine continues, “Thank you. I love it very much, but I can’t accept it until after midnight and it’s the next day, and we can go an entire Valentine’s Day without doing anything special or celebrating with chocolate or flowers or cake or whatever the hell other people do, because we’re better than that.”
“Aomine. The hell has gotten into you?” Kagami is about ready to give him a punch in the face for being both stupid and annoying as all hell, but Aomine simply shushes him, hands him back the deodorant, and pats him on the crown of his head before moving back to sort through the movie stack by the television.
Kagami, bless him, has learned by now not to question things, and only takes deep breaths and calms himself down before setting the deodorant on a table and moving back into the kitchen, throwing his hands up as a final act of frustration. Aomine, meanwhile, turns and grabs his phone and proceeds to send a victorious text to Kuroko, bragging about how he’s right.
—-
Kagami makes sure, the next morning when they’re getting ready, to throw the deodorant as hard as possible at Aomine’s head.

“You’re a smart young man,” Akashi, advisor to the crown says when Kuroko is 16 and still short for his age. Kuroko is rich; perhaps one of the richest kingdoms in the empire despite how young its royal family is. Despite their money, however, he finds no use in grand parties to find a bride. They overlook him, again and again and again. “I’m sure you know what comes next.”
Kuroko heavily, desperately wishes he didn’t know, but before he knows it he has a tall black horse that he struggles to mount (and stay on top of) that has saddlepacks to the left and right. They’re full of clothes and useful things; a crossbow on top of the packs for easy reach, cloaks and winter furs in case he should fall between inns on a cold night. Tinderboxes, lantern oil, dried beef jerkey and apple slices (and a few tart lemon candies, sent along by Kise in case he should find himself feeling dull about his trip).
The scenery when he leaves (waved off by half the castle) is pretty and familiar. For miles around he knows his land, full of heavy, dark forests and thickly populated with both civilians and guards.
His destination, however, is unknown but for the map in the breast pocket of his overcoat. It’s not too far off, perhaps a few week’s travel, and though with forest it’s surrounded by ocean and rocky passages that ships avoid due to their treacherous depths. It’s bleak land, not even populated by robbers for lack of game to hunt for treasure.
The first inn he stays in, he gets the royal treatment from people who know his face. The second and third know he’s nobility, but by the fourth they stop caring and he’s halfway into his journey.
That’s when he stops coming across inns. From one part of a forest to another, the sounds of people die off and animals start. It’s an uneasy, unsettling feeling when he beds down for the first time alone in a forest with only his horse for company, and sleeps fitfully.
The further nights are not so easy, and he thinks of his task until he sleeps during the heavy, moonless nights that are further shaded from stars by trees that seem to move when he refrains from looking.
The legends are old, and hardly untrue. Dozens of books (maybe hundreds, he’s never counted and never asked the head librarian with glasses) talk of a castle near the stormy shores. The castle itself has long crumbled, and the sea has worn the land between the towers away until there’s nothing but water left.
Once, the castle had been grand, full of thin spires and thick walls, surrounded by small houses and lush forests that grew fruits and leaves that turned orange in the autumn. As he nears it, Kuroko sees only evergreens. The spires had been connected by bridges made of wood and stern rope, treacherous and meant for prisoners. The walls of the spires were once made of rough white stone, and many of the books say they were placed by gods or monsters.
Now, there is only one left. Time has polished the stone until it shines, and legend says an unworthy man once went blind when he shone a lantern on it in the dark. The darks in the stone have worn smooth and slick, and no handholds are there to grasp.
Three more days leave Kuroko tired before he arrives and looks at it.
Bushes full of thorns and spikes surround the base of the tower, with white roses blooming from some of the tips if he squints. The island the tower is on is small, barely a horse’s width of space left beside the bushes, and there’s a courtyard’s worth of ocean between him and the tower.
His horse is brave and swims, keeping him from the salty water. The cold seeps through his boots though, and the shore is empty for as far as he can see, surrounded by nothing but pine and sand. When he sets a hand on the tower, it feels warmed by the sun despite the cold breeze.
Inside might be his prize, and he’s loathe to wait.
Once, there had been a royal family to live in the castle here, and they’d been unkind, ungenerous people. For centuries they waged war; their location made it easy to build ships and gather armies of slaves. Their weapons were red and full of fire, like their hair and their eyes. They fought with tar over the edges of castle walls and flaming arrows, or torture to find the ways into a castle.
Eventually, it came time to intervene; they were barely human anymore as their cruelty continued. The last king was a cruel man too, but he had been brave to the very last and rode with his armies into war. The war was not lost, but he celebrated too long and angered the people who had lost all. The people revolted and searched far and wide until they found an enchantress who was willing, and they sent word for a sword to be crafted.
The sword was made of the most precious steel, inscribed with words of a language full of curses known to none but the enchantress. The curses were cruel things, unkind and strong; they leeched to the first blood spilled for them until the requirements to lift it were fulfilled. The hilt was strong too, but decorated in precious gold following a soft ivy pattern that would guard the hand of its wielder. The people sent it along with two of their finest nobles, wrapped in soft silk to gift to the king’s son at his coming of age festival.
The festival went well; the young prince resplendent in white and gold that spilled over his broad frame and highlighted his fiery red hair. Nearing the end of the night he opened gifts, and watched the foreign nobles bare the sword with wide eyes until he reached out to test the sharp point.
Nothing happened immediately, and the prince recieved his gifts with gracious smiles until the festivities were over and all retired to their beds. As the foreign nobles fled in the night, the castle crumbled and crushed those within it as a sad compensation for the lives taken by the foreign king. Only the prince, who for his own safety slept in the highest tower lived, but fell into a deep sleep while the world around him turned to ash and bits of stone.
The foreign nobles had spoken and bragged long of their victory over the cruel empire, and the books written of their words said that only the kiss that embodied a kingdom that was kinder, gentler would wake the sleeping prince.
Altogether, Kuroko thinks it a fitting punishment, but he wishes the punishment had been closer to the ground.
His horse whinnies when he reaches into the saddlepacks for dozens of metal tacks to force into any small gap he can find, and starts to chip them in a shape large enough he can fit through. His research says that the tower likely has stairs for the servants, lit by torches as storage and stairs built into base of the tower.
The stone is thick besides being old though, and driving the spikes through with a chisel tires his arms from leaning over the bushes. At first, he’d tried to rip them out, but the centuries have rooted them deep. The leather coat he left over them protect him, but he’s short for a prince and the bushes are too thick.
When he beds down to sleep, the stars shine off the tower tauntingly.
It takes him three days of chipping to form a hole in the stone tower, and his hands bleed with clumsy hits of the hammer that missed their peg by the time he’s done. Inside is dark and full of spiders, with bits of rock on the floor that have crumbled off the stairs. His tinderboxes come in handy when he makes a torch and lights it, feeling the heat of it catching on his face. If he had a choice, he’d rather be at home.
The stairs inside the tower are dusty and crumble when he steps on each of them, making his heart skips so many beats he think it may stop. He goes up and up until the light at the bottom of the tower is almost completely out of sight, and when he reaches the top the floor is sparkling clean, like it’s just been dusted, and a hardwood door creaks at his first push.
Inside, there’s a huge room with a door to the left that would lead to where a bridge would have been but now is only air. Around are outdated tapestries, untouched by the ravages of time, and less books than Kuroko’s own rooms. Armour and sword leathers line the walls near the furthest window, giving the impression the sleeping prince cares for war too. It worries Kuroko just a little.
The prince when he nears is handsome, with a tan that hasn’t faded, and a gentle crown from his festival resting on his head. His eyebrows split midway through in a trademark symbol of his family, and his chest raises with gentle breaths.
When Kuroko kisses his, he tastes like lemons and looks at him with eyes like fire made solid.
Kagami’s quiet when Kuroko explains, and for another day and night he comforts Kagami through his loss. Even Kagami (Taiga, the Akashi in the back of Kuroko’s mind supplied), who hated his father’s bloodlust, would miss an entire castle’s worth of deaths.
Outside, he chokes up a little but says goodbye like he’s resigning himself to new life. He mounts the horse behind Kuroko, wraps arms around him to get at the reigns and rides much better than Kuroko ever managed.
He looks at the scenery like it’s unfamiliar, at Kuroko like he could be new, and confesses he was going to leave that life behind anyway. When they come back to the castle, Akashi works on helping Kagami cope with reality.
Then, he starts courting Kagami. Kagami never sees it coming.
