Person of Interest 5.10 — The Day The World Went Away
PERSON OF INTEREST | 4.10
PERSON OF INTEREST — 3.03 “Lady Killer”
Listen y’all.
Let’s talk about these fine ladies.
See, Person of Interest was my first major fandom after Stargate Atlantis, Sherlock, and Criminal Minds.
Stargate Atlantis had the same problem that BBC Sherlock and Supernatural had: mainly, that the writing team could not control their misogyny long enough not to make every female character a complete dumpsterfire of contradictory motivations, damsel in distress tropes, incompetence, and sidelining.
The fandom reflected that misogyny.
And at the time, I resisted the characters and hated the characters for being emblematic of the misogyny that I had to deal with in my life (formal apology to Dr. Keller).
And then I watched Person of Interest. And these characters were not that. They had flaws, but those flaws existed within a consistent moral framework.
Control was an antagonist, but she believed herself to be the protagonist of another story, and acted in a way consistent with how she define one-who-saves. She resisted the title of “hero,” even, because she knew that her actions were not morally right, but she believed them to be morally necessary. And when the “morally necessary” thing was to work with the actual protagonists, she did so.
Sameen Shaw was largely gender non-conforming. She did not have the feminine empathy that she was supposed to have. But rather than punish her for that, the narrative celebrated her as a hero. At the same time, it also not deny her affection and loyalty and status as someone people believed “she was worth sacrificing for.”
And then there’s Joss Carter, a cop who believes in “protect and serve” existing within a corrupt police force. Having to make the moral compromises necessary to uphold justice when the laws are written by unjust people.
It was gold. It was a balm to my soul.
Since that moment, I have made the decision that I will treat women characters with all of the grace with the fandom normally gives to male characters who are played by actors they want to fuck. I grade female characters on a curve of how much of their moral “badness” is directly attributable to them….
…versus how much is morally attributable to their writers is not being able to contain their misogyny.
Because this show showed me that this is an author problem, not a character problem. It doesn’t have to be this way. People behind the scenes are making it this way, and they could unmake it.
So, anyone who has seen Sherlock, who has seen Supernatural, watched Stargate Atlantis — who is disenchanted with how the women characters were treated: I strongly recommend, on every possible level, Person of Interest.
Mood
Okay, so Christmas movies. I think everyone has their faves. We all know the big ones. From Home Alone to Elf to Miracle on 34th Street etc.
But what is your fave non-Disney, non-big Hollywood blockbuster, non- big Hollywood names holiday movie? Like I’m talking maybe Hallmark-level, B-type movies.
contrary to popular belief not everyone has an innate sense of internal gender or care to have one or seek a name for it, some people go their whole lives without questioning their occupation in one of two gender roles, but for some people, if pressed, they don’t feel that internal sense of ‘i am a woman’ or ‘i am a man’, and in that case i feel the switch over to transgender vs cisgender relies on active identification of a gender other than the one they were assigned. if someone’s like ‘idk dude I just work here’ then that’s valid
#i would describe my gender as not exactly ‘idk dude i just work here’ #more like…..when someone assumes you work somewhere that you don’t #but you know how to help them so you do it anyway #my gender is wearing a red shirt at a target
These are the best tags
A portion of people in the notes are like ‘but that makes you trans. That’s called being agender’ and another portion of people are going ‘this is how the majority of cis ppl feel and it’s NOT agender’ and personally I feel like both of them are missing the point here. Yes a lot of people identify as agender because of this feeling. Yes a lot of people with this same feeling still identify as cis. These are not mutually exclusive experiences and it doesn’t mean the agender people are secretly cis or the cis people are secretly agender. It just means they have very similar experiences of gender that they choose to conceptualize and label differently, and neither of them are mistaken or wrong to do so.
Holy mother of curb theory those are GOOD

today im thinking about the huge buff bread guy from kikis delivery service. highly underrated guy
Genuinely just a good man. Wife adopts teenage witch that needs a place to stay in the city? Sure. Even though you got a kid on the way? That’s fine. Cat too? Love cats.
My favorite moment with him is when he goes to get some prepped baking sheets and he does this fancy twirl with them in front of Jiji. Like, there’s no other people in the room, he does this to impress a cat.
I don’t think he ever says more than a whole word the entire movie, and I still love him more than most Disney princes based on this one moment alone.
Coming to get you
Wait for it

The republicans have the senate but not a supermajority so as usual nothing is going to happen
Filibuster. Why does it exist? To stop things from happening. Things will continue to not happen.
Also republicans hate government. They don’t want the government to be doing things. Mitch McConnell will not bring bills to the floor. That’s what he did last time. He physically hoarded them in his office.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we get a government shutdown or two in the next couple of years. The margins are close enough that the democrats will be able to raise a stink about the budget. That could cause some problems. It seems like the republicans hold everything but not by an insane amount. Predict a lot of gridlock coming up. Even less happening than usual and the things that do happen either being not very fun or purely utilitarian required to keep stuff going level stuff
Also I will say that if your local congressperson is a Republican, still write them letters about bills you care about and tell your family and friends to do so as well. Especially if they’re a moderate. Especially if it’s an issue relevant to people in your region.
Don’t tell them in your letters or calls that you’re not a Republican. Don’t tell them what your party affiliation is. Emphasize how much you love your region and your country and gosh darn it would be so important to me if this or that didn’t happen sir. Similar rules apply if you get the opportunity to meet them in person. No matter what you’re an everyday person totally relatable to a conservative and gosh darn sir you’re just so concerned about what it’ll do to this great city of ours so what are you planning to do about it
And again, get all your family and friends to do the same if you can.
I want to say in response to a certain kind of sentiment that no I’m not asking you to “appeal to the morality of your oppressors”. I’m saying pretend to be one of them for just long enough that they’ll listen to you. Bring up something they’ll like. If you’re a person of faith, maybe bring that up. They don’t need to know which faith. If you have a traditionally blue collar job, bring that up. If you have kids, bring that up. If you’re a law student, bring that up. If you were born and raised in your district, if you or your family own a business, if you hunt for your food, if it’s relevant and a conservative would trust you more if you brought it up, bring it up. They don’t need to know you’re queer, they don’t need to know your race, they don’t need to know your political party. You can however heavily imply that you might be the sort of person who would vote for them and wouldn’t it be a shame if they pissed that kind of person off
it's supposed to be their job to listen to what their constituents say. make them do their jobs! take up their time and resources! even if you don't get the vote you want out of them you can still be a pain in the ass!
And remember that because it’s so tight, there will be issues that die because just one or two Republican senators decided they were going to break ranks. It won’t always be as dramatic as McCain saving the ACA - a lot of the time, it will mean the bill wont make it off McConnell’s desk because he knows he doesn’t have the votes and they hate getting publicly embarrassed by having their bills be defeated by their own people, and the media won’t even mention it having been considered in the first place.
So absolutely lean on the above sentiments as hard as you possibly can to convince your congresscritter that maybe, on this one issue, it’s not worth pissing off the folks back home so they’ll quietly tell Mitch they’re not onboard and it’ll die before anyone realizes it was there.
Time to feed unprofessional managers what they’ve been dishing out for far too long.
Couple things here, for when you do this to people:
1. if you get the “answer my call” text, NEVER ANSWER THE CALL.
They are calling you because they want to have the conversation verbally, and be able to lie later about what they said or didn’t say. Force them to continue via text or email- force them to continue the conversation in writing or not at all.
2. “Lack of 2 weeks notice is unprofessional!” or the other version, “Not providing notice is illegal!”
No it isn’t. Neither is true.
And in the US, all states except Montana are “at will” employment (though you may hear an employer refer to it as “right to work” to make it sound better, it’s the same thing). Sure, at-will employment means they can fire you without cause, BUT! It also means that you are not legally required to give a reason for quitting, or to give notice of any kind.
Is it polite to give notice when you can? Sure. Do bosses expect it? Absolutely. But that does not make you legally required to provide it.
3. The only thing I would change in the worker’s interaction here was their response when initially asked to come in.
Employee: “Hey Mark. Sorry I’m unable to cover the shift tonight because I’m studying for my exam tomorrow.”
Don’t give a reason for your lack of availability. It may be tempting to. You may feel rude if you don’t.
DON’T DO IT.
You do not owe your boss any information about what you do off the clock, and any reason you give will only ever be used against you.
Boss: “Hey I need you to cover Jasper’s shift tonight.”
Employee: “Sorry, I’m not available.”
And leave it at that.
Do not elaborate.
Do not offer additional information.
When you boss asks you to elaborate, because they will, be polite but firm. “With respect, that’s personal. I’m sorry, but I’m unavailable to cover this shift/work late/come in early/etc.”
Be a broken record- you’re unavailable. That’s the only information they need to know, and it’s the only information they have a LEGAL RIGHT to know.
Please stop giving your bosses information they don’t need to know and don’t get to have, because they’re only going to try and use it to fuck you over later.
My job is HR. The above is completely accurate.
Self explanatory sadness…
Happy N7 Day
I feel so sad and yet I’m laughing so hard. This gif is a paradox.
Anyone else stare at their mutuals like 👀👀👀👀 “please dm me. You seem so cool and I wanna be friends. “
