Paul lips found his father’s cartilage. “You will do beautifully.”
“I know. That is not the issue.”
Paul studied his side profile. The lighting here did not do his father enough justice; he supposed there was very little that could. But it did contour his cheekbones and the strong jaw hidden behind his beard. More importantly, shards of light dappled his eyes atop the gunmetal. It managed to perfectly adorn the determination Paul saw there.
Paul smiled.
“I know.”
His father flicked to him and returned it briefly, even if strained.
“House Major Atreides is recognized by the floor.”
His father’s expression closed. “By your leave, your Majesty, Lord Speaker.”
He pressed at the amplifier beneath the desk and its bulb flickered green to indicate the field was active. The characteristic hum was reminiscent of a low tinnitus, quite ignorable, nipping at their eardrums.
The Duke did not move to speak right away. Rather, he took a final sip of Tlassa, licking his lips of the dregs, and settled the near-empty tumbler by the corner of his desk. It was swiftly collected by one of the stewards.
“For millennia, stretching pre-Imperium, House Atreides has existed. In these years, thousands of noblemen and women have had the fortune to marry into our family– to serve as husbands, wives, bear our children, and perpetuate our legacy. These are your very ancestors; and I am sure they have informed you all of Atreides loyalty to our family.”
The Duke paused, as if choosing his next words very carefully.
“So, I hope it does not come as a shock that I refuse to apologize for my actions.”
Incensed mutters crested at that. The Duke only had to raise his hand and the assembly drew to a hush, much to Paul’s pleasure.
“Nor will I attempt to go through each point and rebut them. In fact–” The Duke tapped at the darkwood with his signeted pointer. “–the Baron was remarkably concerned with the truth during his speech. I don’t think I caught a single blatant lie.”
The Duke nodded at the Baron, and the Baron mockingly inclined his head back. Beside him, the Mentat appeared to be nursing at a sparkling, spice-infused liqueur. He gave the flute a toast in their direction.
The Duke smiled brilliantly; it didn’t reach his eyes, skewering the Harkonnen delegation. “So, forgive me for taking inspiration, Lord Baron. Because I also find myself beset by truths that would be in the best interests of this Congress to learn.”

(chapter 7 was actually written before the messiah trailer so it never intended to be rebellion against baldothee but it turned into that in a way LMAO)
