Steve’s phone ringing wasn’t a common sight for his team. He didn’t have much by way of family and Cath only got ahold of him when she had free time which wasn’t very often with her busy Naval Intelligence schedule. Hell, his own schedule was busy, often getting pulled into training and information meetings at the last minute.
Nearly rolling his eyes at the hush that falls over the fire pit, Steve fishes the device out of his bag and frowns at the number displayed. The area code doesn’t ring any bells either, not reading the 619 he had become familiar with or the 808 of his youth.
“McGarrett,” he answers, pressing the device to his ear.
“Hello, Mr. McGarrett. I am Jamie Allen, a caseworker with Child Protective Services. Do you have a moment?”
Frowning, Steve waves off his team and walks away from the group. “I do. What’s this about?”
“We have a little girl in our custody whose mother claims you are the father. I can’t reveal specifics over the phone, but if there is any way you would be able to make a trip out to be tested, I know this girl would be happy to meet her father.”
“Where exactly would I be making a trip to?”
“Aiken, Georgia, just outside of Augusta.”
“Ma’am, with all due respect, I’m in California and I’m currently under contract with the US Navy. It’ll take me time to get leave and fly out.”
The woman hums. “I understand. If you cannot make the trip, then we will look into alternative placement for her.”
“Surely she has other family. What happened to her mother?”
“She was removed from her mother’s care and there are no other relatives willing to take her in.”
Steve sighs. “Damn, okay. Look, I need time to get things worked out. How long do I have?”
“Our system can hold her in protective custody for up to a month but we would prefer if you were able to come out long before that.”
“I’ll get on it,” he states then pauses. “Is… is the kid okay?”
“She’s shaken but she’s alright. Keep me updated when you expect to be here.”
“Will do.”
“Thank you, Mr. McGarrett. I hope to see you soon.”
A sigh escapes him as he drops the phone down, mind already racing through the different steps he needed to complete. Leave request, delegating leadership, booking the flight, hotel, and transportation. Then begins to spiral even more at the thought that he might end up with a kid to take care of. That came with its own host of arrangements to be made.
“Hey, Smooth Dog, you’ve been out here for a bit. Is everything alright?”
Even as he turns to face Freddie, the frown remains on his face. “Not really.” He ponders his words for a moment then: “I think I have a kid?”
Katherine trembles, clutching her beloved wolf close as Miss Jamie leads her down a hallway of the facility she had been in for a week. She recognizes a few of the caregivers as they stop to talk to one of them but there are so many unfamiliar adults that she shuffles to the side, hiding behind Miss Jamie as much as possible.
“Here we are,” Miss Jamie murmurs, smiling as she crouches down. “I know this is all scary, but can you be a big girl for me? There’s a really special person waiting to meet you.”
Clutching her wolf tighter, her eyes dart to the door just beyond Miss Jamie’s form as she responds softly, “I can try.”
“That’s all you need to do, sweetheart,” Miss Jamie says, standing. “Come on.”
Opening the door, she steps to the side and smiles.
Katherine shuffles forward, her head peeking around the doorframe. The room was one of the playrooms the facility had that she had seen other kids going into from time to time. She didn’t really know what they were for and the current situation didn’t give her much more information. Were they rooms to meet special people?
Stepping fully into the doorway, her eyes finally land on a man sitting in one of the chairs at the taller table. He’s not familiar in any way, so she’s not really sure why he’s in this room as the special person she’s supposed to be meeting.
At the sight of her though, he stands, an unsure smile on his face. He doesn’t move forward, doesn't acknowledge Miss Jamie, doesn’t do much of anything really. Well, besides staring at her. That was weird.
“Wow,” he says, crouching. “I didn’t expect you to look so much like me.”
Katherine blinks, shifting back a little even as Miss Jamie ushers her further into the room.
“Katherine,” Miss Jamie says, smiling down at her. “I’d like you to meet Steve McGarrett.”
So the weird man’s name was Steve. Steve? That was—
“Hey kiddo. I know this isn’t a great way to be introduced but I’m your father.”
She freezes, eye wide. The weird man was her dad? But her mom had said—
Katherine’s inner storm is interrupted as Steve moves closer, a barely there frown on his face.
“It’s gonna take a little while for us to get to know one another, but I’d like to do that if you’ll allow,” he says. “You don’t even have to think of me as your dad if that’s too scary. I can just be Miss Jamie’s friend.”
“Mama said you didn’t want me,” she finally says, tears welling in her eyes. “She said that you knew and you told her you didn’t care and that you didn’t want a kid.”
“Oh, kiddo, no,” he immediately shakes his head, arms reaching out as if to hug her but never making contact. “I promise that if I knew, I would have done everything I could to be with you.”
Her tears pour faster as her face crumples. “Why did she lie to me?” she cries. “She’s always lying about everything.”
Miss Jamie kneels down and pulls her into a hug. “I don’t know, sweetheart. That’s something only your mom knows. But you don’t have to be lied to anymore, okay?”
Steve’s heart shatters at the little girl’s—his daughter’s—cries, his own eyes becoming misty without his permission at the sight.
When he had received the results of the paternity test two days ago, he hadn’t been sure what to expect from this visit. Apprehensiveness and skittishness, sure. The little girl had been through a lot already and she was about to have something else dumped on her plate. If she wasn’t overwhelmed, he would have been shocked.
“I really want a dad,” Katherine sobs, a fist scrubbing at her face as she steps away from the caseworker.
“Oh, kiddo,” he murmurs, “I want to be your dad more than anything.”
Jamie’s eyes bounce between the two of them. “Steve is your dad, sweetheart. He just needs to get to know you.”
His daughter sniffles. “Am I going home with you?”
“Not today,” Jamie replies for him, with a soft apologetic smile. “There’s still some grown-up things that need to happen before that happens.”
“Soon?”
“Soon,” Steve agrees. “The moment all the adult stuff is done, you can come home with me.”
“Okay,” she says, shoving her face into the stuffed wolf in her arms. There’s a few beats of silence before her bloodshot eyes reappear. “Can I have a hug?”
He looks to Jamie, who nods with a smile, before focusing back on Katherine with his own soft smile as he opens his arms once more. “Of course, kiddo.”
She runs over, slamming into him and gripping his shirt until her little knuckles turned white. Wrapping his arms around her, he hums and passes a hand up and down her back. He studiously ignores the wetness seeping into his shirt, instead locking eyes with Jamie who had taken a few steps back towards the door where a small desk-like table and chair sit.
Turning his attention back to Katherine as she finally lets go, he frowns at the snot on her face. Eyes darting around, he’s unable to locate any tissues or the ilk so he shrugs, pulling up his t-shirt.
“Can I wipe your face, kiddo?”
Katherine nods, tilting her face up for him to clean. She makes a face as he does, but takes the shirt wiping like a champ, even smiling when he says, “All done.”
Knees finally complaining, he sits down on the ground, encouraging Katherine to do the same.
“So,” he draws out, “What’s your friend’s name?”
She looks at him, her face scrunching adorably. “My friend?”
He gestures to the plushie still clutched in her little hands. “This guy.”
The way her eyes widen and her entire mood shifts fills his heart with joy. “Oh! This is Balto! He’s my best friend! I got him last year when Mama’s friend took us to the zoo and we saw the wolves and…”
Steve can’t help but smile as this sweet little girl, his daughter, launches into her explanation, making several detours and u-turns along the way.
He still wasn't sure he could be a dad, especially to such a sweet girl like Katherine.

On one of his visits, Kitty notices it. The thin silver wedding band on his left hand. He doesn’t acknowledge it, doesn’t try to hide it, but it keeps her attention. She doesn’t mention it either, unsure if it’s even worth mentioning because he’s not really interested in her. He acts like he is but who knows if it’s anything more than curiosity.
A few visits later, on a day where she just can’t keep her thoughts where they should be, Kitty can’t help but notice the ring on his left hand once more and her heart sinks as she thinks about the feelings she’s been allowing herself to feel for a married man.
Sure he’s the one that’s been flirting but she can’t do that to another person.
“Jack,” she says, softly. “Um, are you married?”
His eyes track her own gaze to his wedding band, and he hums. “Yeah, I am, kid. Been married to my husband for about 10 years.”
Her throat feels tight. “Ah, okay. That’s sweet.”
Jack glances over at the empty windows then behind her. “It doesn’t change any feelings, sweetheart. My husband knows I’ve been talking. We might be old men but we’re… a little more adventurous.”
“So he’s okay with…”
“Of course, kiddo. I wouldn’t put you in that position and any man that does doesn’t deserve to be called a man.”
That brings a smile to her face. “Definitely not.”
As the receipt prints, Jack leans in. “I’ll send you my husband’s number, yeah? You can ask him yourself. He’s been dying to meet you anyway.”
“Really?” Kitty’s wide eyes meet his. “I’m not that special.”
“You are, sweetheart. You really are.”
And there it is again. Special. Why does everyone insist that she’s something worthy of care and of affection and love that doesn’t come with strings and conditions?
Jack’s text comes through not long later, his husband’s contact attached.
She doesn’t have a chance to respond as the bank gets busy, forcing her to do back to back transactions usually with a minute or less between.
When she finally gets to go on break, she plops down on the sofa of the break room and debates whether or not to text Jack back right now.
Deciding his sleep is infinitely more important, she clicks on the shared contact and pulls up a new message before freezing.
How the fuck is she supposed to word such an awkward message? ‘Hi, I’m the younger woman your husband has been flirting with, just making sure he is, in fact, cleared to flirt’?
No. Absolutely not.
As she scrolls through TikTok, she jumps when her phone buzzes. Her eyes widen as the message preview pops up, fingers freezing.
He actually responded? What the fuck?
Quickly clicking the message notification as the preview disappears, her eyes scan the sent message as another comes through.
Michael, as she learns, is also an ER doctor, though he’s on an opposite schedule to his husband. He’s also apparently the chief of the department, which wow, okay. She might start to believe everyone about being special if she keeps meeting all these much more established and successful people out of nowhere.
Kitty still hasn’t met him in person as he, in his own words, has other people do his banking for him and she, thankfully, has not had to return to the ER since her follow-up. Even now she’s trying to make the numbers work on how to pay for the ambulance ride and the multiple ER visits.
Jack has listened many times to her rants about how expensive healthcare is, even with her employer provided insurance. She makes it very clear every time that she’s not angry at him, but at the broken system.
He, of course, agrees. And has made mentions of talking to someone, a Kiara or Dylan or Noelle, about getting financial assistance for her which…
“No, no,” Kitty stresses over the phone as she’s getting ready for work. “There are people that genuinely need that assistance. I’ll be okay. Things will be tight and uncomfortable for a little bit but I’ll…” her lip trembles but she pastes on a smile, “I’ll get through it.”
“You’re such a sweet girl for worrying about others and I know you would be able to get through a tough time, but allow me to help you okay? You don’t need to handle everything alone.”
Kitty frowns. “I wish I could believe that, Jack. I really do. And I hate to even have the doubt because you have been nothing but kind to me, but…”
There’s a brief stretch of silence as she bites her lip, wondering if it’s too soon to let him in, wondering if moving this quickly with a man that was a stranger two months ago was brave or stupid.
“I get it, kiddo,” Jack says eventually. “Just… please tell me if it gets too much, okay? I want to be here for you.”
He doesn’t need to say the rest of the statement, the one that’s clear in his soft tone, in his actions everyday to protect her and provide for her. For her, a woman he’s known all of two months, a woman that even his husband, who hasn’t even met her in person, seems to adore.
A message pops up on her phone as she picks it up off the dresser.
“You still there?” Jack says, startling her. “You got awfully quiet.”
“Still here,” she murmurs. “Are you still at work?”
He hums. “Yeah, I am, sweetheart. Sitting on the couch in the break room for the first time in… shit I don’t even know.”
“You have nosy coworkers,” she states then slaps a hand over her mouth. “That was rude, I’m sorry.”
A laugh escapes him. “Nothing to apologize for, sweet girl. You’re not wrong; there are no secrets in the ER. The nurses make sure of that.”
She hums. “Are you…. are you going to tell them?”
“Would you want me to?” Jack asks, voice soft and quiet. “Dana will find out somehow but she’s respectful of everyone’s personal lives. I wouldn’t be upset if she knew, but that decision is yours, kiddo.”
“She sounds nice,” Kitty says, with a small smile. “I wouldn’t mind her knowing… maybe not the extent of… well, everything, but, y’know.”
He makes a gruff humming sound. “That’s not a clear answer, sweet girl.”
A flutter goes through her. “Sorry… I’m okay with her knowing about me, just not everything between us.”

Kitty really can’t believe her luck. This whole mess is just proof she should have stayed home instead of going to that stupid store for her roommate’s stupid organic soy milk. Some day, she’s going to strangle her people-pleasing tendencies.
She’s barely paying attention as the EMTs roll her into the ER, spouting off information to the doctors and nurses that surround her gurney in moments. The collar around her neck prevents her from looking around too much so she’s surprised when a face leans over hers.
“Hey, kid, you feeling okay?” The doctor asks, his hazel eyes scanning her face.
Kitty huffs. “Not- not really. Hurts.”
“Yeah, you’re pretty banged up,” he says, as he shines a pen light in her eyes causing her to wince. “You gots the best doctors and nurses here taking care of you, though. We’ll do everything we can to get you feeling better.”
Humming, Kitty attempts to nod. “Ouch. Yeah, okay. Thank you.”
“Nothing to thank us for.”
She zones out, eyes tracking the hands that appear and disappear out of her vision but laying as still as possible. Medical terms are thrown around above her before another face, this one female, appears in her line of sight.
“Miss Devlin, we’re going to need to cut off your clothes to properly assess your injuries.”
Kitty can help the quiet whimper she lets out. “Ah… okay. Just… careful, please.”
“Dr. Ellis has the steadiest hands in the ER,” Kitty hears somewhere near her head. “Second only to me of course.”
“You got quite the ego, bossman.”
“You kids know damn well I have the skills to back it up.”
Kitty recognizes the banter for what it is: a distraction as the cold metal of the shears cut along the front of her (thankfully old and worn out) sleep shirt. The pants follow not long after while a cold liquid is applied to her stomach causing her to whimper.
“Easy, kid, I know,” the male doctor says before there’s a pressure on her side. “What are we looking at, Dr. Ellis?”
“Lungs are up, minor bleeding in the belly, need imaging to determine the cause. Could be a puncture from a fractured rib.”
The doctors and nurses return to work, leaving Kitty to wallow in her mind. Her mind falls down so many rabbit holes to keep herself from panicking at not only being in the ER but having internal bleeding all while being nearly naked in front of a hot doctor. Two actually.
“Alright, kid,” the gray-haired doctor leans over her again, sending her heart fluttering. “We’re going to send you upstairs for some x-rays and a CT scan then once those results are in, we’ll get you fixed up.” He glances at the monitor. “All of that sound good?”
“Yeah. Sounds great.”
“Thatta girl.” He taps the railing on the bed. “See you back here soon.”
The next few hours are a blur of tests and vital checks and traveling here and there. Kitty can’t keep up with what is actually happening with how quick everything is moving, so she just lays back and lets the professionals work. She vaguely remembers being fitted with a splint on her arm and what she thinks is an ACE bandage on her foot, but the details of who and when are fuzzy.
“Alright, kiddo,” Dr. Abbot, the gray-haired fox of a doctor with frankly massive arms, says, stepping into the room she had finally landed in after all her tests, “looks like you’ve got a mild concussion, a sprained ankle, two hairline rib fractures, and a fractured wrist.”
Kitty’s eyes widen, “That’s… seriously?” Leaning her head back, she blinks away hot tears. “All because of that stupid milk.”
“It’s a lot,” the doctor states, sitting on the stool next to her bed. “But most of it is minor and will heal in 6-12 weeks.”
A sigh escapes her. “I can’t afford to take off work that long.”
Dr. Abbot hums. “You should be able to go back to work within the week. I would recommend a few days of rest before you do so, but none of your injuries are severe.”
An involuntary whimper slips out of her as she pouts. “My roommate owes me so bad.”
“I would agree,” the doctor says. After typing a few more things on the tablet in his hands, he turns it off and looks at her. “We’ll keep you on concussion protocol while you’re here which is lots of rest and avoiding screens and bright lights. From there, I would recommend still limiting screen time and getting lots of rest as you return to daily activities.”
Kitty nods. “Okay. Sounds good.”
“We’ll send you home with lots of information on the next steps you’ll need to take regarding your other injuries, namely your wrist and ankle. We’ll also give you a list of signs to keep an eye on with your ribs.”
“Thank you.”
“Like I said, kid, nothing to thank us for.” He stands, sliding the stool away. “If your pain doesn’t get better or it seems like it’s getting worse, come back here. Otherwise we’ll see you back here in a week for a follow-up.”
“Okay.”
Dr. Abbot bids her a farewell, letting her know that they’ll get started on her discharge.
“Shit,” she groans. “How the fuck am I going to pay for this?”
It’s a relatively quiet day at the bank, Kitty muses as she messes with her wrist splint. Enough people that she’s not bored out of her mind but not too many that she’s going crazy. Only one more hour left and she can go home and deal with her asshole of a roommate. Yay.
Looking up when she hears the door, a bright smile appears on her face.
“Dr. Abbot!” She greets, shoving down the butterflies that immediately erupt at the sight of silver curls and arms the size of her head. “Hello!”
The doctor smiles, stopping in front of Kitty’s window. “Oh, hey. How are you feeling?”
“A little sore but not bad,” she replies, watching as he pulls cash out of his wallet. “Nothing some acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and menthol won’t fix.”
He grins. “That’s my girl.” His eyes drag over her wrist briefly. “How’s the bruising?”
She shoves the butterflies down again. “Still scary looking but it's yellow and green around the edges so we're getting there.”
“If it doesn’t go away, come see me, yeah?”
“Of course.”
He hands over the cash. “Jack Abbot, into my checking please.”
Kitty starts the transaction with a nod. “Thank you for your help, by the way. I know it’s your job and all but I really appreciate everything all of you healthcare workers do.”
“Nothing to thank me for,” Dr. Abbot—Jack— says, leaning his hands on the ledge of the desk, “though we all will say thank you for your appreciation.”
“You all deserve it,” she states after counting his cash in the awkward way she had gotten used to with her limited mobility. “The people who get angry at you guys for things you would change if you could are… not very smart to say the least.”
His lips quirk up. “You said it, kid.”
Finishing up, she pouts at the printer until it spits out his receipt then hands it to him with a bright smile. “There you are. Anything else I can do for you today?”
“No, that’s all,” Jack replies with a smile. “Thank you.”
“Thank you for coming in today.”
“I’ll definitely come in more often if you’re working.”
She prays her cheeks aren’t as red as they feel. “Okay. Sounds good.”
Turning, he steps away, his camo backpack hanging off one shoulder. “See you soon.”
“Have a nice day!”
“You too, sweetheart.”
Anna-Jane steps over as soon as Jack is out the door. “You okay, hun? He was laying it on a little thick there.”
Turning to her head teller, Kitty fans herself. “I’m okay, I think? My heart is racing a little.”
The older woman blinks at her then laughs. “Those silver foxes will get you.”
Eliana peeks her head around the corner. “Did Kitty just get hit on by an old guy?”
“He’s not that old,” Kitty states, huffing. “And he’s attractive and competent. I mean, he’s an ER doctor. Plus did you see those arms?”
Anna-Jane shakes her head. “You have it bad, hun.”
“I think I do. Holy shit.”
Jack comes in regularly after that day, at least two to three times a week for various transactions. Each time, he checks in on her healing before chatting about different things.
“Georgia? That’s a pretty big move.”
Kitty nods as she pulls up the various tickets on her screen. “It was hard, especially as a kid. Going from a relatively small town to a larger city like Philly was rough.”
“I can imagine. I bet you were a brave kid, though.”
“I like to think I was.”
Her education also came up once or twice.
“A double major?”
“Not really,” she corrects with a smile. “More taking classes from both. And it was really only because I was struggling with the design program because of how rigid it was. If I failed one more class, I would have been on academic probation.”
“College isn’t easy,” Jack assures her with a smile. “I know I struggled through my undergrad, only kept my grades up because of ROTC. Med school was a bit easier because I knew what I wanted.”
“I thought I did too, but I guess not. Degree is just collecting dust at this point.”
“You’ll find a way to use it, I’m sure.”
“Maybe, maybe not.”
Through all of his chats, Kitty notices Anna-Jane hovering a little, observing the interactions quietly. She never approaches Kitty with any concerns, but she’s always just in ear-shot whenever she and Jack are talking.
“Is everything okay?” Kitty finally asks when she notices the head teller listening once again. “I’m not doing anything wrong, am I?”
“No, no,” Anna-Jane assures her. “I’m just protective of my girls. I want to make sure he doesn’t step out of line with any of his questions.”
Smiling, Kitty nods. “Makes sense. He’s been a gentleman. I think he’s just curious about the new teller, especially since we met the way we did.”
“He didn’t come in regularly until you started working here, hun,” her head teller states. “That man has a big old soft spot for you and you only.”
Kitty blinks. “Really? Wow, that’s crazy.”
“I don’t think so. You’re a sweet girl and a smart one, too. Honestly, I’m surprised you don’t have more men like him coming in here.”
“See, that would be even crazier. I’m really not that special.”
Anna-Jane looks at her with a frown. “Ask that man and see what he says.”
And Kitty… can’t. She doesn’t have Jack’s number and even if she did, there’s no way she could come straight out and ask him such a childish question.
Days later, Kitty is busy when the delivery is made, her attention focused on the customer in front of her until they leave with a smile. So Anna-Jane walking over with a paper bag in her hand has her tilting her head in confusion.
“Kitty, this just came for you,” she says, setting it next to her station. “Did you order something?”
Brows scrunching, Kitty shakes her head. “No, nothing today.”
“Looks like there’s a note,” Nessa says, smiling. “Maybe it’s a gift?”
Pulling the note gently off of the bag, Kitty reads the card, her face warming at the words and the sender’s name.
“Her face is so red!” Eliana points out, giggling.
Anna-Jane looks at her then back at Kitty. “Who’s it from, hun?”
“Ah,” Kitty clears her throat. “From a guy I’ve been talking to recently. He wanted to make sure I had lunch today.”
“Aw, that’s so sweet,” Nessa coos, pouting. “He sounds like such a good guy.”
“You’ll have to bring him in for us to meet sometime,” Anna-Jane says, smiling. Her smile freezes before shifting to a grin. “Unless we’ve already met him.”
“What, no,” Kitty says quickly, eyes wide. “He’s a guy that I met randomly and he definitely isn’t a customer.”
Anna-Jane holds up her hands. “Easy. It’s okay even if he is. I didn’t mean to push.”
Shaking her head, the younger woman looks back at the note. “You didn’t, it’s just… I’m still nervous that what we have isn’t allowed. He doesn’t seem to care about appearances but he’s established, you know?”
“You should talk to him about your feelings,” Nessa tells her. “He seems like a good person so I doubt he would be upset at you.”
On her lunch break, she pulls out her phone and adds Jack’s contact before sending a message.
Though it does make her wonder how he ordered the food. Scheduled it, perhaps? That would mean he’s actually thinking about her throughout his day which is… hard to believe.
Hours later, just as she’s clocking out, she gets a response.
If her heart wasn’t racing before, it was now. How did this man tick every single box she had and even ones she wasn’t even aware of? She didn’t know but damn was it hot.

“I hate foggy days,” Kitty whines as she drops onto the sofa immediately after entering Scott’s house, said owner of the house following behind her. “People are so stupid.”
“That seems to be your general complaint most days,” Trent teases with a grin, leaning forward in the armchair he had pulled closer to the coffee table. “But what’s the reason today?”
Kitty groans. “They don’t know how to drive!”
“Nothing new there.”
“Okay, but,” she sits up, a frown on her face, “why the hell are people using high beams in fog?! It doesn’t actually help and it just makes things more annoying for everyone else!”
“It does help, kid,” Scott rumbles as he sits down beside her. “You just don’t like high beams.”
“They’re horrible and hurt my eyes!”
Trent chuckles. “That doesn’t mean they don’t help other people.”
“I don’t care,” she whines, flopping back. “People don’t know how to use them safely and considerately! I’m not the only one that has trouble seeing after being blinded by high beams of some dumb person with no common sense.”
She pouts until Trent powers on his game after which she scrambles for her bag.
“Oh! Right! Introducing dad to games!”
Scott grunts, turning his hat around and pulling it down over his face. “No.”
“C’mon!”
“Nope.”
“Please? For me?”
Pushing his hat up to expose one eye, he looks at her.
“You’re being a meanie.”
“Do your nerd stuff with Trent, kid.”
“Fine,” she huffs, pulling out her Switch. “Meanie.”

As the sun meets the waves, golden rays fractures across the surface of the ocean in a mesmerizing display Kitty can’t take her eyes off of.
“Kitticat!” Emma calls. “You in there?”
Looking away from the horizon, Kitty smiles at her best friend. “Yeah, just spaced out.”
“Seems like you went all the way out of the galaxy,” she teases. “Dad tried talking to you a few times.”
Kitty looks over at Uncle Jason who is sitting on the other side of the fire next to Scott with his gaze flickering to her every few minutes. “Oh. Sorry.”
Her uncle leans forward. “You okay, Kitty?”
Nodding, she smiles. “Just… spacing. The sunset is pretty.”
“It is,” Emma agrees, her own eyes turning the pink and orange sky.
“It’s so peaceful,” Kitty murmurs, leaning back in her chair. “All the chaos and stress of everyday life makes everything feel so bleak. Then you see nature’s beauty like this and it just… makes everything feel so much easier.”
“When’d you get so wise, kid?” Scott asks, the corners of his lips twitching up at the corners.
“Dont’ expect it all the time,” she replies with a grin. “Only happens once a year.”
Emma huffs. “Disguising self-deprecation doesn’t negate it.”
Narrowing her eyes, Kitty frowns at her best friend. “Have you been talking to my therapist?”
“No, but it means that I’m right.”
“You didn’t need any confirmation.”
“Correct, but still feels good to have back up.”
“Uncle Jason, she’s being mean,” Kitty whines, pointing at Emma.
Shaking his head, her uncle ignores her, turning back to his conversation with Scott. Emma giggles while Kitty pouts, crossing her arms.
“Seriously, though,” Emma begins after settling down, “believe in yourself more, yeah? You are so incredibly smart and kind and beautiful. I don’t want you to ever think that the things you’ve been told about yourself by people that don’t see you are true. Listen to your family, Kitticat. Please.”

Scooping up Leona from the floor, Kitty wanders out of her room, smiling as the scent of freshly brewed coffee reaches her nose. As she passes the doors of her family’s bedroom, she smushes her face into Leona’s cream-colored fur and breathes in his unique smell. He wiggles seconds later as she reaches the top of the stairs, pushing until she sets him on one of his shelves near the stairway.
“Good morning,” she murmurs to him, scritching his head.
“Kitty! Get your butt down here before your father eats all the bacon!”
“Coming!”
Jogging down the steps, Kitty is greeted with breakfast in full swing. Plopping down in her usual seat (the only chair not directly facing an entry point), she begins adding food to her plate after stuffing a piece of bacon in her mouth.
“Morning, kiddo,” her dad says ruffling her hair. “Sleep well?”
Kitty hums. “Well enough. Had two furry comforters so I was a little uncomfortable.”
Eddie, creature of perfect timing that he is, plops his head on Kitty’s thigh with pleading eyes laser focusing on her hand.
“No,” she states firmly, gently pushing his head off. He whines stepping in place as he turns shiny eyes towards his next victim.
“Oh no,” her dad states, pulling his plate away from the edge. “You’ve already had plenty.”
The family of three chats as they finish breakfast with her parents playfully trading barbs throughout. Kitty giggles at the age-old arguments, their familiar form of love bringing a bright smile to her face.
As she finishes eating, she gathers up her dishes and begins to stand.
“Leave ‘em,” Danny says, waving her off. “Your dad and I will take care of them.”
Her dad gets up as he finishes up, picking up her dishes and making his way over to the sink.
“Alright, I’m heading out,” Kitty says, standing. She walks over to the front door, grabbing her keys from the hook. “Ti amo, Danno. I love you, dad!”
“Ti amo, cara,” Danny replies, walking over and kissing her cheek. “Have a good day.”
“Love you, kiddo!” her dad calls from the sink. “See you tonight.”

❥ warnings: person being creepy with a car, anxiety spiral, minor panic attack (let me know if you'd like me to tag anything else!)
Kitty frowns as she watches through her bangs as the car crawls by again. The dark paint nearly blended in with the dark night, only highlighted by the streetlights lining the road. The driver is barely visible, hidden by darkly (likely illegally) tinted windows.
Tilting her phone back just a little further, she snaps a quick picture of the license plate, flinching when the car’s tires squeal as the driver zooms away once again.
A shiver goes through her when the night becomes silent, a heavy pressure pressing down on her as she scans the nearly empty road in front of her and the desolate parking lot behind her.
Opening up her contacts, she scans the top ones, immediately ruling out most of them. Emma was too far, the Perrys had more important things to worry about, as did the Hayes’. Hell, anyone in her contacts list definitely had more important things to worry about than her stupid anxiety making her overthink and catastrophize a perfectly safe situation.
A car driving by has her head snapping up.
Bright white glossy paint greets her as the car drives by at a normal speed. A cute family sticker takes up part of the back windshield and there’s a cat magnet on the bumper, she notes as it pauses at the stop sign.
Still, she can’t help the tremble that takes over her body or the stuttered breaths or the pounding of her heart.
“I can’t do this,” she whines, looking down at her phone once more. “Here goes.”
Clicking on a contact, she holds the phone to her ear just as headlights light up the road.
She freezes, sucking in a breath.
“Hey, kid.”
The voice on her phone thaws her a little even as wide eyes watch the dark, shadowy car roll by again. It seems slower this time, as if it’s getting slower with every loop. The thought scares her, her mind jumping to what will happen if it stops.
“Kid?”
“Scott,” she breathes out. “Scott, I’m scared.”
There’s no pause. “Where are you?”
“I- I missed the bus I usually take and the next one doesn’t come for another hour and there’s this car and I’m probably being so stupid and-”
“Kid. Breathe.”
She does as he instructs, listening to his end of the line while taking as deep of breaths as she can manage. She hears muffled talking as well as doors opening and closing before the acoustics of Scott’s voice changes.
“You breathing, kid?”
“Ye-yeah,” she says softly. “Trying my- my best.”
She tenses again at the squeal of tires. A whimper is ripped from her as she shuffles as far back into the bench as she can.
“We’re almost there, just keeping breathing.”
“It’s doing it again. Please, Scott. I’m so scared. I don’t- the car- it’s-” She whimpers again, her breath catching and her heart beating like a drum in her ears.
“Kid, I need you to focus on my voice, okay? Breathe in, hold, breathe out.”
“I-”
“Breathe in.”
She follows, sucking a painful breath in.
“Hold.”
Her heart slows as the breath in her lungs burns.
“Breathe out.”
She feels lighter, the pressure not weighing as heavy.
“Repeat.”
And she does.
Again, and again. Even as the car passes again and again.
“So you have a daughter now?” Trent chuckles. “Teams aren’t your life anymore.”
Scott huffs. “The teams will always be my life.”
“You care about her, though,” his friend states. “That means she’s carved out part of that life for herself at the very least.”
“She has,” Metal agrees. “I’m still all in, though.”
“No one is doubting that, Metal.”
Scott frowns as his phone rings right as he’s opening his second beer of the night, interrupting their conversation. Fishing it out of his pocket, the name on the screen has his hackles raising.
On the fourth ring, he presses it to his ear, “Hey, kid.”
When there’s no response, Scott is already standing, motioning for Trent to do the same.
“Kid?”
“Scott,” the kid breathes out, her voice trembling. “Scott, I’m scared.”
He moves and Trent follows, the two of them out the door before she had even finished speaking. “Where are you?”
He listens to her babble about what happened as they climb into Trent’s Jeep. Pulling up the nav system, he types in the address for Trent and presses start.
“Kid. Breathe,” he states, focusing on her quick, shallow breaths.
He spends the drive keeping the kid calm, keeping his ear on her breathing. She keeps talking, a good sign, even when the car that’s upsetting her passes again, sending her back into shallow, quick breaths.
“Kid, I need you to focus on my voice, okay? Breathe in, hold, breathe out.” he rumbles, guiding her when her breathing doesn’t change. “Breathe in. Hold. Breathe out.”
He listens close as she repeats the steps over and over, even when her breath catches.
Headlights light up the road once more as a dark colored SUV pulls to a stop in front of her, its hazard lights flashing on. Kitty’s breath stutters, her eyes widening.
“There’s-”
Scott’s hulking figure appears from the passenger seat of the SUV, his phone still pressed to his ear even as Kitty’s hand drops to her lap. Tears well in her eyes and her lip wobbles as she watches him approach.
“You came,” she cries.
Pulling his phone from his ear, Scott nods even as his gaze scans the surroundings. “Of course I did, kid. I have a friend here with me.” He waves the driver of the SUV over as the guy walks around the front of the vehicle, his eyes also scanning. “This is Trent.”
Her eyes dart between the two men, opening her mouth to respond, only to freeze once again. The car creeps by again, even slower this time.
She whimpers. “That’s it. That’s-”
Scott doesn’t need anything else, about-facing and walking towards the road. He doesn’t even make it to the edge before the car is peeling off again, this time turning the opposite way at the light, merging onto the highway.
“Can you look at me, Kitty?” Trent says, gently. “Metal’s got that all taken care of.”
Kitty’s gaze returns to the new person, his blue eyes catching her brown ones. “Metal?”
Trent hums. “It’s a nickname. He jokes that he’s made of metal.”
“Ah,” she nods, eyes drifting to Scott.
“Do you mind if I touch you?”
Kitty blinks. “Um, yeah?”
“Thank you.”
He presses two fingers to the pulse point on her wrist, looking down at his watch. Kitty watches him quietly, her breaths evening out as the night quiets.
“It won’t be coming back,” Scott says as he strides over. “I called a friend at the local PD. They’ll take care of it.”
Kitty’s eyes widen again as she shakes her head vehemently. “No, no, no. There’s- This- It-” Her breath picks up again as more tears well in her eyes. “This isn’t a big deal. They were being creepy but there’s- it’s-”
“Kitty,” Scott says, kneeling in front of her, “it is never okay for someone to make you feel uncomfortable like that. If the cops are too much, call me or call Naima. We’ll always be here for you.”
Letting out a breath, Kitty nods. “Okay.”
“Heartbeat’s a little fast, but sounds strong,” Trent says. “You okay to get up?”
“I think so?”
With Trent and Scott’s help, Kitty is settled in the back seat of Trent’s car quickly. The two of them slide in the front as she feels the adrenaline drop out of her body. Her eyes are sliding closed before she realizes, the world fading to a whisper as her body shudders into sleep.
The SUV comes to a stop in front of Kitty’s apartment building. Glancing at the rearview mirror, Scott’s lips twitch at the sight of the kid curled up on the back seat, head resting against the window.
“No survival instincts,” he mutters to Trent.
Trent chuckles. “She’s like a cat. She feels safe, she’ll fall asleep anywhere.”
Scott grunts. “She feels way too safe with two guys she barely knows.”
“I wouldn’t say barely with how much you talk about her.”
“I’ve said two things about her.”
“Which is paragraphs for you, Metal. Most of us barely get a few words.”
He grunts again, gaze turning back to the mirror.
“You gonna wake her up or do I need to?”
“Kid looks exhausted," Scott rumbles.
“Yeah, the darkness of those dark circles concern me. Has she said anything about her sleep schedule?”
He cuts Trent a look.
The other man nods. “Right, you guys aren’t that close yet.”
“I’m not her father or her keeper.”
“Maybe you should be,” Trent states, continuing even as Scott rumbles his disapproval. “Look, it’s obvious she doesn’t have anyone if you, big scary SEAL Metal, are the first person she thinks to call when she’s scared out of her mind. And as your best friend,” he ignores Scott’s grunt, “I can see how much you already care about her. You don’t come out in the middle of the night like this for just anyone. Hell, you don’t answer the phone for just anyone.”
“I get it,” he states, stopping Trent’s essay. “I just don’t think the kid needs someone like me to be important to her. It’s only going to get her hurt when I end up kicking it outside the wire.”
He gets out of the car, cutting the conversation short. Even as he walks around the SUV, Trent’s words sink under his skin, causing a frown to pull at his face.
Through the window, he can see the kid jump as Trent reaches back and taps her knee. Once her head is off the window, Scott opens the door.
“Scott?” she frowns, her cheeks slightly puffing out. “Are we at my apartment already?”
“Yeah, we are, kid. You slept the whole ride, which we’re going to have a talk about at some point.”
Kitty blinks up at him then nods. “Okay.”
“Can you make it upstairs by yourself?”
Another slow blink. “Mm. I think so.”
Gathering her backpack and her jacket (and after a brief battle with the seatbelt), Kitty stumbles out of the SUV, wobbling a little as her feet take a moment to steady.
“Thank you,” she mumbles, hand reaching back to grab at the large collection of keychains hooked onto her bag. “I’m-”
“Don’t apologize,” he rumbles. “Never feel like you can’t call me, okay kid?”
She hums. “Okay. Tell your friend I said thank you too.”
He nods. “I will. Get inside. We’ll keep watch until you do.”
“Sounds good,” she says, then yawns. “Goodnight, Scott.”
