A very sleepy Kya comic rant
First of all i want to say this comic was EVERYTHING i hoped for and so much more, i absolutely loved how they handled Kya’s character. Starting off with older Kya comforting Korra and caring for her i think is the sweetest thing, i also really like that Kya seems to have an understanding of depression from the way she speaks. Especially the line “Sometimes our lives change so drastically it feels impossible to keep on living.” What to me really leans towards Kya having depression issues and potentially even suicide issues but finding ways around them, with her adding on “But we do keep living. Even after the greatest upheavals, even when it seems we’ll never feel right again. We find ways to keep going.” That to me seems that yes Kya had those issues but she found that motivation to live, she found reasonings to live and she’s trying to explain that to Korra. I also think she handles caring for Korra so well, she handles her gently and doesn’t push her. She talks to her obviously about her life and how a certain experience had changed her mindset on things. She also seems to give physical touch often and i like to think thats a way Kya comforts people, even in the show we see Kya giving a lot of physical touch to those who need comfort or just to those she loves.
Onto the story, i absolutely loved it, it is AMAZING. I love how it begins with Kya explaining the reasoning for her journey, she wants to be more than the avatars kid, she wants to be her own person and i’m thinking the breakup she mentions could have pushed her into doing what she was, she more than likely lost that one person she felt herself around.
I’ve always imagined Kya disliking titles, even ones like “miss” and that was definitely confirmed with her being preferred to be referred to as just “Kya”.
I love how polite she is, she clearly wants to be respectful to those around her and she does it so well.
I think it’s sweet she was interested in how Tsetseg came to work for the Earth kingdom, listening to her story about it and then adding her own story of why she is in the desert!! I think it’s so sweet she signed up to help a struggling community, Kya’s character consists of her being there to help and this added onto that. (I mean taking the rpg books im the future Kya opens a free clinic in republic city and i think this particular journey inspired her to do it.)
I also LOVE kya’s immediate love for the desert, how she admires it and finds it pretty<3
I absolutely love how quick she was to defend Tsetseg when Bai Yin seemed to speak down on the sandbenders they employ. Jumping into question it and bringing up that sandbending is the best bending style for the environment.
I like the page of her pulling out her family photo, but immediately placing it back into her bag. She mentions she wanted to be away from everything back home as possible so honestly her even wanting to keep that reminder of her family away really fit the moment.
Kya doing her lessons is so CUTE!! I really like how she showed that plants and minerals are useful when it comes to healing considering there doesn’t seem to be any other waterbenders in the si wong! I like how she didn’t stick to traditional healing ways that was expected of her and decided to teach the way she knew and what worked for her. Every panel of her teaching has her smiling so much and it’s so sweet to see how much it clearly means to her and that she was realising this was her purpose and how she wanted to live her life.
At the dinner scene i love how compassionate she was immediately to Bai yins father and was immediately asking if she could do anything, and then when she was told she couldn’t, she instead moved that compassion onto Bai Yin’s story and her responsibilities !
Onto her IMMEDIATELY jumping in to healer mode once her class was disturbed by raiders, seeing her not even think about her own safety and just jumping into heal people was so sweet. Of course she asked for cover but i more think that was towards the injured person rather than herself.
When the group of Kya, Tsetseg and Bai yin move on Kya’s first thought is to check in on Tsetseg, asking her how she is, and if she’s worried about her clan. Then obviously her curiosity showing up about the water drying up. Kya realising the desert clans are giving up their history, traditions and other stuff just to get water to survive seems to hit her really hard and that’s when it seems she begins to feel lost on her own ability. I think more so out of guilt at how scarce water is to these people whilst she constantly has a source of water.. i’m not sure if that is the context but i think it could be part of it.
She seems to continuously lose herself more and feel detached the more she watches the way things are in the si Wong.
Even losing her healing she still ends up being a comfort to the injured person and helping when she could, she looks so lost in the panel that’s she’d bandaging Dorzhi.
Now onto a scene i thought was so good but oh my heart 💔, Kya being so lost on why she’s the way she suddenly is, she can’t pinpoint the reasoning and she just looks so devastated about it what she definitely is, her whole reasoning for going to the desert was suddenly ripped away by something unknown going on with her energy. During the scene where Tsetseg takes her out to the whale bones she mentions she thought she could ALWAYS relt on her bending and augh that must be so confusing for her to suddenly lose the one thing she felt confident in herself about, what i think is the whole reasoning it really affected her.
Then she brings up that she feels nobody recognises her anymore and OH MY GOD that hits hard, i think that falls under the whole expectation thing of being the avatars daughter or just purely being seen as a waterbender. Kya knows who she is and wants to be seen as both her cultures but she is often seen as just a waterbender and when so many people view you as something it starts to actually mess with you and you begin to lose yourself or lose your self image.
But them, talking to Tsetseg really lightens her up and even finds a way to get her bending back through channeling her energy with Tsetsegs what is so sweet oh my god that whole page of them holding hands os absolutely GORGEOUS and i think Tsetseg seeing Kya for more than just a healer and them bonding really helped Kya in that moment and was exactly what she needed. I also think it was such a touching moment into their relationship between them, showing they have a connection and want to know more about each other.
THEN when she gets her bending back they figure out that the water HADN’T dried up and instead was being redirected to the earth kingdom what i did NOT expect that really caught me off guard,,
Also Kya’s energy and how she senses the water depending on Tsetseg is actually so cute,, i never expected something like that, being dependent on someone elses energy to help with your own but it was such a good feature!!
Also Kya jumping to prove the water situation to Ghi was so funny, he was obviously very aware and Kya just exposed him and what he was doing LOL
AUGH and Kya, Tsetseg and Bai Yin finding the water trapped and having it return to the desert is so sweet,, Kya literally helped that place to survive for the rest of its time and i was so happy about that 😭!!!
Also the ending where she was saying goodbye to Tsetseg, she has a green scarf from her its so cute oh my GOD 😭🩵
And then we get back to Kya and Korra, i LOVE LOVE LOVE how Kya mentions that Korra will always be a waterbender and of that heritage rather than purely the avatar, i think this fits so well into Kya’s character. Kya herself wants to be seen as both her cultures rather than a title or just a waterbender and her seeing others for more than a title and seeing them for their heritage is so SWEET SHE IS SUCH A SWEETHEART AND I LOVE HER SO MUCH<3!!!
Anyway, i absolutely loved this comic
I also adored Tsetsegs character, i knew i would but oh my god she was absolutely everything. She has so much love for her home and has so much love, care and respect for the history of the si wong and her clan,, i love when characters treasure their history and home<3
She is also just such a sweet character, she knew when Kya needed comforting and knew exactly what Kya needed. She was so sweet to those around her but really didn’t take bs from Bai Yin when she threw it Tsetsegs way!!
Tsetseg is a WONDERFUL character and i really hope she returns in SOME way.
This comic in general means the world to me, i’ve been so desperate for something like this for so long, something purely on Kya and something that digs into her character and this was just perfect. I absolutely loved it i can’t even explain how much i loved it,, this comic is seriously my happiness right now and has already made these past few days since getting it so positive, i’ve reread it a good few times and sob everytime because i can’t believe it’s real,, Kya’s character has helped me through some really rough patches and is continuing to do so to this day<3 and now i also have Tsetseg, her character these past few months (even if she was only mentioned in page previews) has helped me so much as well. I’m so in love with the both of them and i am so thankful that i have them. I’m also so thankful and happy i was a motivation for this comic, i cannot even put into words how much that means to me and how much of a dream come true that is. I never expected to actually be a motivator for any canon Kya content but here we are :,3,,,
I’m so unbelievably happy 🩵
