the moon was not quite full , but in the cloudless night’s sky , she still illuminated the world beneath her. sokka thought it should be beautiful – and it was – but maybe it was how close she was to full , or the fact that he would be heading back home in the morning. or maybe both. probably both. but the beauty looked warped and sad. it looked lifeless. like she’d been when she fell into his arms. after he’d promised her father – sokka blinked back a rogue tear , hastily wiping a sleeve across his eyes , but didn’t turn his gaze away.
the moon was not quite full tonight , and yet sokka felt the full weight of his guilt.
he heard the footsteps , knew suki was there , but he couldn’t will himself to look away. this whole break , he could sense something unspoken between them and it sucked. they had so few moments together these days , obligation separating them. but no amount of stupid jokes or embraces could melt this thing between them this time. really , he knew what it was. it was the same thing that weighed down upon his chest now. maybe it just didn’t feel right to talk about without her there.
“ her name was yue. ” sokka found the strength then to look away , turning towards suki , a sheepish hand at the back of his head. “ but , uh , i guess you already knew that. ”
undeniably, suki was always curious about yue but she was never one to pry . she wanted sokka to tell her on his own . she would note the sadness he had about anything remotely related to the moon or yue just like at the serpent’s pass or the play on ember island . she figured something happened, she knew something happened or well, the jist of it rather . something that was out of his control . maybe he wasn’t ready to tell her, she thought to herself and that he would come around so never thought to ask .
quietly, she sat beside him , glancing up the moon herself before blue hues met sokka’s , giving him a small smile. it was her own little way of offering some type of comfort to him . “ i remember . she has a pretty name, “ she paused. “ — also, it was pretty hard to forget you bawling at the theatre , ” she teased , an attempt to lighten up the mood . “ you know, asking someone if they had pickled fish after making out isn’t very nice . if that was me, i’d punch the heck out of you . ” a joke, of course . she didn’t think it happened too . suki knew the play was nothing but satire, an exaggerated version of the truth , all for show and shouldn’t be taken seriously.
“ i saw you out here and thought that maybe you wanted some company . ” looking down at her hands . “ — look, i understand if you don’t want to talk about her, ” finally acknowledging the elephant in the room . “ it’s okay . ” she respected him and the time he needed .
