The Bella's Book Club summer reading challenge is BACK for 2026! 📚🦜

BBC is gearing up for another year of summer reading! Have a book (or five) you think book club would enjoy? Now's your chance to recommend it!

How to participate:

Fill out the Google form by 11:59 PM EST June 13th, 2026 with up to five of your recommendations! These can be your own favorites, books you think go with Twilight or the Gothic genre, books you're dying to talk about, plays, poetry, graphic novels, or nonfiction! Almost anything goes except for:

Books/authors that BBC has already read or that already appear on Bella's list from Midnight Sun

Fanfiction (save it for the Bonus Rec section!)

2. When the compiled rec list is posted on June 14th, choose five or so of your fellow BBC readers' recs and read them by mid-September! Come chat about your picks in the BBC Discord, or link us to your Goodreads/Storygraph/Tumblr review. We'll also be running the challenge on Storygraph so you can track your progress.

Guys, about the picture:

⟡ I put those dates at the top because 3019 of the Third Age is when the War of the Ring ended, and 120 of the Fourth Age is allegedly when Legolas and Gimli departed Middle-Earth allegedly together to go to the Undying Lands (I'm realising now that it maybe should be Fo.A. 120 instead of F.A. 😭 oh well) so they're traveling around sometime between these years...

⟡ The flowers are Lissuin and I heard somewhere that they would look like honeysuckles

⟡ The text at the bottom is an excerpt about why tf the Eldar would accept Gimli into Valinor and how weird that would be

⟡ I tried to reference some Icelandic costume for Legolas, and some old Norse and Germanic costume for Gimli. The longbow is in a case, and unstrung, because I saw someone say that it should be transported this way. Gimli's axe has an axe sheath and I want to see more of these around in general fantasy because they look cool.

(^^ I might be horribly off with this stuff. But this is ✨fantasy✨ so I guess I can be ✨super wrong✨)

The defense of Osgiliath

About the picture:

⟡ The 12th and 13th March of 3019 Third Age are the days in the book when Faramir and his company meet Sauron's forces in Osgiliath. They are pushed back to the Causeway Forts, which they also lose on the second day. Here, Faramir is gravely wounded.

(In the movie this plays out differently obviously, and I admit I was mostly thinking about the charge to Osgiliath in the movie while drawing this, the part after Denethor freaks out at Faramir and then yk...🍅 because that is my FAVORITE horrible depressing scene in the trilogy)

⟡ The armor was inspired by a combination of Byzantine, Ancient Roman, and vaguely Gothic armor. I read that these civilizations might have inspired Gondor.

⟡ The flowers are meant to be Seregon, which are a Middle-Earth plant, but I believe only appear in a story set in the First Age and not associated with Gondor, but...they are red like blood canonically and I thought it would be cool

+ Plus...check this out: apparently the word "seregon" comes from the Sindarin words for blood (sereg) and stone (gond), and the same root is also what gives Gondor its meaning of "stone-land"

⟡ I listened to some dungeon synth while I was drawing this and started ascending lol
