“That’s correct, but I’ll admit that has quite driven me into a lot of hassle and not to mention turned me into a few people’s pure laughing stock — though I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.” They’re the one to let out a laugh, understanding how their words may sound too decrepit sounding for their age. “I have the habit to do that, yes. Stands me out amongst others I’d like to think.” They smile. “I do hope so. But a few ambitious bussiness owners can have their minds debauched so easily by recognition that they’ll go as far as tweaking the authentic concept to sell out to the audience — I hope that won’t be the case and things won’t change as severely once fame has reached this place “

“Somehow I doubt that it will, truth be told.  This does not seem much like the kind of place that will change its spots simply because someone says jump.”  She sipped her drink.  “The bar is modern, and so is the library, to a certain extent.  But there is too much of the old style here, especially in the reading room; one would not be able to change it without changing the entirety of the establishment.  The decor, the lighting, even how the staff are dressed is more formal than a simple everyman’s bar.  Too much work, too much time and effort and money to change.  Plus, look at who has gathered here.”  She smiled and gestured between them.  “Old souls, who prefer to be left in peace..  Yes, perhaps the bar will attract the youth -- but if that is all they are here for, there are hundreds of other establishments who can cater to them, ones who want to change to suit their ever-varied needs.  Here, the whole point seems to be the constant spot on a rough ocean.  If that makese sense?”

Sebastian rolled his eyes. She was so dramatic, blowing that out of proportion, really. “You’re not smiling much today, are you?” The girl pushed more buttons on the panel and he scoffed. “Get out of that corner, I don’t want to spend the rest of my life in this elevator!” Another cheerful ding and he was beginning to regret his disdain for apartments on lower floors. “I can be perfectly corteous,” Sebastian argued, though even to his ears he sounded more like a stubborn child who wouldn’t admit to their mistakes. Still, he continued, “But you don’t inspire a lot of courtesy in me.”

“I shall stay here as long as I like,” retorted Aurelia.  It was a weak reply, even to her own ears, but she refused to let even his most inane statements go unchallenged.  She wasn’t usually so confrontational, but this man seemed determined to bring out the worst in her.  

“And what part of you, may I ask, would have inspired either courtesy or smiles in me?”  Aurelia revelled in satisfaction as the elevator announced another floor and brought a pronounced wince to his face.  Her sense of guilt was growing smaller with every word he spoke.

“Maybe it’s their version of a good sandwich and they’re just trying to administer it to the obviously not so prepared society.” Daniel retorted with a short lived chuckle. “It’s a family owned restaurant. Maybe no one decides to tell the truth thus no feelings are hurt except ours. I do hope they can improve soon though.” He knew people were capable of improving. He had witnessed many novice chefs turn professional if treated right.

“You should have but I also should have reacted faster.” Maybe there had been a part of him that wanted to see the amusing reaction. Pulling the gum out of his pocket he then handed it to the woman. “There you go.” 

“Goodness.  To each their own, I suppose, but they will never improve if their testers simply attempt to spare their feelings.  As evinced by the result.”  She shook her head.  It would only make things worse, in the end; they would be unprepared for harsh criticism, no matter how warranted, after being coddled in such a way.  That more than anything was a death knell for any endeavor, business or no.

Aurelia took the stick of gum and inclined her head.  “Thank you very much, I appreciate it.”  She popped it into her mouth, grateful for the strong surge of mint that made the air she breathed feel ten times colder -- and most importantly, erased the lingering flavor on her tongue.  “What do you intend to do now?  Surely you will not be eating the rest of that.”  She gestured to the offending sandwich.

“I guess. It’s a semi bar but it’s a bar still. You never know.” Maybe Karen was simply speaking from experience. As a bouncer she had seen so much shit gone down so quickly. “They don’t? All the more reason for a fight to break out soon. I mean I’d want to look for a safe spot now if I were you. Thankfully there seems to be a lot of those here.” She was probably just messing around. “I actually I haven’t touched a single drink. Brought my own. I was too wary I might get disappointed.”

“I am quite small.  I am sure that I can duck for cover underneath a table, or hide myself in a dark corner,” replied Aurelia, somewhat seriously.  “You talk as though you know quite a bit about bar fights, da?  Ah, but, please forgive me if I am being rude.  You just seem to have first-hand knowledge rather than the abstract.”  She smiled.  “Is that so?  Well, please allow me to buy you something from the bar, when you’ve finished your own.  Even if it is not as strong as you like, it will be less disappointing if it is a gift, da?”

Her anger was almost palpable, words sweet to the ear, but eyes lightening up with controlled emotion. Sebastian peeked at her from the corner of his eyes, behind his sunglasses. He’d seen her before now and then, in passing, and though he wasn’t sure what floor she was on, he was certain she lived in his building, she was no visitor. “Good girl,” he said in a mocking tone, fluttering his eyes closed again. Did she live alone? He wondered. Did she share an apartment with a friend? Family? Maybe a boyfriend?

She let out a heavy sigh and he reopened his eyes to catch her pushing back into the control panel. Sebastian parted his lips to protest with a frown lining his forehead, Are you stupid?, but the elevator came to a halt and he heard the loud, cheerful ding as if it had been pressed right into his temple (with a sharp, pointed edge). One look at her and he knew she’d done it on purpose, she looked peaceful, pleased even, despite however many minutes longer she’d just trapped herself with him. Sebastian offered her a yellow smile, determined to ignore the damn dinging just so she wouldn’t know she’d succeeded at irritating him, but two dings later and he was turning to her, “you’re a vindictive bitch, huh? I figured there must be more to you than the polite little smiles.”

Aurelia had to admit that she was pleased with the other man’s obvious discomfort, even though a very small part of her felt guilt for such a childish act.  Indignation made it’s way to the fore at the insult, however, and she looked back at him with cold eyes and a pleasant smile.  “Oh?  Am I allowed to talk again?” she asked sweetly.  “I am surprised that you could see my little smiles, with those sunglasses obscuring your view, da?”  She plucked an imaginary bit of lint off of the lapel of her coat, pushing anther two buttons with her arm when she moved it back to its previous position.  “But who am I, to expect a little bit of common courtesy from one’s neighbors?”

Oh shit. She was so well spoken it took Karen off guard. Suppose she was still not used to being in a bar environment and not seeing a bunch of drunkrads bashing one another’s head. “Huh. I guess this is the perfect place for people like you then. At least for now. Things ought to get weird soon.” She said with a little shrug. “You gonna have a drink?”

“Hopefully later rather than sooner.”  Aurelia chuckled and tapped the glass beside her on the table.  “I have this one for now.  It should hold me for a little while; I mean, I am not aiming to be drunk, and I doubt that I could consume enough in my time here to get drunk, anyway.  But it is quite good.  They do not water down the liquor like other establishments that I have been to.”

Piers smiled at the person in front of him, “I found it in front of my door this morning with a note saying ‘from: secret admirer’. The suspense is killing me.” He hugged the teddy bear playfully. “Who do you think it could be? Or more important question, what should I name it?”

Aurelia was quiet for a moment, one finger tapping against her mouth as she stared the giant stuffed bear down with a deep intensity.  “Vladislav,” she said finally, and with an unmistakable air of seriousness.  “Da, he definitely looks like a Vladislav.”

They chuckle. “That’s quite correct, perhaps I was being over critical. It’s become a force of habit when you do what I what do. You can no longer take a seat to enjoy your surroundings without having to digest every single corner of the room. Finding flaws becomes an enticing notion.” They also have the natural instinct to be competitive. To compare their ideas with others and  feel the perpetual temptation to outdo them.

Elijah offers another nod as they take their drink. “Won’t be long until one of them spreads the word around though. Teenagers and their gadgets can simply do that with one swipe of a thumb.” They shrug. “May as well take it all in before it happens.”

Aurelia smiled.  “One should always take care to criticize things, especially the things that you love.”  She was tempted to laugh at his talk of teens and their ‘gadgets’, especially considering his own youth.  “You speak as though you are far older than you are.  But surely it cannot be such the bad thing, da?  If a good place gets good business because people like it enough to talk about it.  And besides, trends tend to pass as quickly as they come.  The crowds will not stay for very long, once the novelty wears off.”

“No, Elphie, leave the poor stranger alone.”Leia said, looking down at the small white poodle who had circled her leash around the person’s leg. “I’m sorry, she thinks everyone is her friend. I can’t take her anywhere.”

“Oh, no, I do not mind at all.  I for one would love to be her friend.  Elphie, did you say?  Hello, Elphie.”  Aurelia laughed and held her hand out for the dog to sniff.  She had been startled when the small animal had suddenly trapped her in its leash, but she seemed amiable, for sure.  “She is smart, to know that if she gets the leash on you it means you cannot leave.”

Daniel held a hand up as he was about to reach and stop the girl from taking a bite for her own sake alas he might be a second too late. He grimaced as he watched her and the way her face was contorting. He had to admit, it was a bit funny but he didn’t have it in him to just laugh. “Told you.” He said with a soft chuckle. “Apparently it’s a brand new menu. They thought mixing some weird ingredients would make a splendid sandwich. Why don’t people go with simplicity anymore? They overload the cheese.” He huffed. “You need anything to rinse that? I have some gums.”

“They need to go back to the basics, clearly.  I do not like to cast aspersions but it does not seem as though they know anything about making an appetizing sandwich. “  Aurelia shook her head with something akin to wonder.  “I mean, I have eaten strange things.  But surely they must have people taste-test before they put the menus out for customers?  Perhaps not, if this is the result.”  

Aurelia nodded.  “Please.  I do not normally chew gum, but I am willing to make the exception for this.  I really should have listened to you after all, da?”

She gave a small chuckle, finding the girl’s rambling cute and honestly a bit comforting. It may sound odd but Ellie was always comforted in finding people who were just as awkward as she was. She nodded and gave a smile. “Yeah, of course. You keep it. You were here first, anyways. “ She nodded and said “No, I get that. Don’t worry, you don’t sound standoffish. It’s really okay.”

Aurelia cleared her throat in embarrassment.  “All the same, do forgive me.  I really should have thought about what I was going to say before I said it.  One should always be mindful.”  She took another sip of her drink.  “Which book do you have, there?”

Roland probably shouldn’t be here. He got too wasted on the trip, waking up sick and cranky but at this point, wedding nerves were getting to him and realizing the lack of their own funds when getting back from their honeymoon after all that too. He had his Harry Potter book in his hand, then a half empty margarita in the other. He kept to himself mostly, that was until seeing a grown man bothering the younger women. “E-excuse me.” Roland got up, putting his book down and grabbing his cane instead. “H-hey S-sally, S-sorry I w-was running late.” He hoped the man had seen him before. He had quickly left her alone, turning the other way. “S-sorry -” He blushed, face red.

The man who had approached her was fast becoming belligerent, something which both confused her and incited a brief panic.  She was trying to talk him down, of course, but he was so adamant about berating her that it seemed to not make much of a difference.  Then the boy appeared, and just as quickly as he had approached her, the man lost steam and went away.  A good thing, too -- Aurelia had been so startled by being called by a different name that she had almost asked who ‘Sally’ was.

“Please, do not apologize.  I should be thanking you for coming to my rescue.  He was being quite nasty, da?”  She smiled reassuringly.  “So, thank you.”

That’s when Elijah notices her accent. Russian perhaps? As an architect it’s on their tab to pursuit and venture opportunities from all over the world, they’re no stranger to meeting those of countries aboard, if anything the instant gives them some sort of unexplainable thrill. Being able to expand their knowledge is without a doubt a sublime concept. “Me neither, it’s a splendid idea I must say. And quite brave given the bar itself won’t always appeal to the youth or the… how do I say this, slightly more puritanical type.”

Though they do have non-alcoholic beverages here Elijah assumes the front sign itself doesn’t always attract all kinds of people. That thought could’ve originated from the fact that they were raised around conservative neighbors, which they had a massive disdain for. They chuckle. “Sort of, I’m an architect, studying places helps me advance my ideas.” They admit. “Everything here is well placed. I’m quite shocked this hasn’t become viral yet.”

Aurelia cocked her head to the side.  Puritanical type?  She didn’t really know what that meant, but clearly, it had something to do with disapproving with alcohol.  “I don’t know about the youth...in this country, it seems as though everyone does whatever they can to drink as much alcohol as possible before it becomes legal to buy it.  And with such a high drinking age, too.  I have never seen that before.”  

“That would explain it,” she replied with a smile.  “Perhaps they wish to keep it something of a secret -- or perhaps the clientele do.  Imagine if this spot were crammed with people.  No one would be able to concentrate on their reading.”

Elijah shakes their head and waves their hand. “No, no. Really, it’s fine. I could use some company anyway.” In spite of their amenable gait Elijah is still more or less new to the current scene, having someone else there would do them good just incase circumstances become a bit befuddling. Her first assumption hits them right and a smile grows wider on their face.

“You could say that.” They respond as they brush their fingers along the seat, feeling its texture and assuming its age silently. “I heard of this establishment when I was attempting to discover new venues for me to pass the time —– it sounded interesting so I thought I’d check it out myself.” They explain, nodding. “Is this your first time?”

“If you are certain.”  Aurelia settled back down, smoothing her long skirt and arranging herself comfortably.  She watched as he ran his fingers along the chairs and tabletops, inspecting everything with a critical eye.  It wasn’t the typical behavior of a patron -- at least, not unless he had some strange sort of compulsions that led him to touch every surface he saw.  

“Da, yes.  My first time here.  I saw it while I was walking and I am never one to pass up a bookstore.  The fact that there was a bar here was also favorable, and novel.  I have never been in such an establishment before.”  She sipped her drink.  “‘Discover new venues’ -- you make it sound like it is your job to find places to go.  Or have I misread?”
