Lady drew in a deep breath, enjoying the feel of the wind enveloping her. This was perhaps as close as she could come to flying while still keeping her feet on the ground, and it told her more than ever that this was the right place for her and her family.Â
âI donât think we need a real swimming pool,â she replied. âBut a hot tub would be lovely! A place where the two of us could relax and look out over the city. And a fire pit would be perfect for that too.â She snuggled against Warâs side. âWe can enjoy it ourselves, and we can also help our children use it.â She giggled as an image came to her. âThey could even set up a tent and pretend to be camping, if they wanted.âÂ
Children⌠it seemed Lady was thinking like him. As she snuggled into him, the Horseman could nearly picture the future together with his beautiful wife and son. The place was definitely big enough for little ones. War was sure that V would like it here too. The school district was good, offering public or private choices, and there was a nearby park. If the two of them were going to have children of their own, then there would have to be some planning involved in the extra bedrooms.
âA jetted hot tub complete with a new bikini, just for my lovely Lady,â War promised as he gestured to the balcony. âFire pit for sâmores, tent with sleeping bags and spooky campfire tales⌠maybe a pool later for the kids. I think little V would enjoy one as much as he loves to splash around in the tub. Weâll wait and see, wonât we?â He kissed her forehead. âAnd whenever you are ready for children, we can always ask Sadon to help us.â
He led her back into the master bedroom, a small smile on his face. âThough I think youâll definitely appreciate this.â Opening the doors to a partly finished walk-in closet, War suggested, âAnd for my Lady, the finest of luxury with a walk-in closetâŚâ
She smiled softly, leaning in to his kiss. War was right; they could add any new features they wished for later on, and she quite liked the idea of a home that would grow and change as their family did. She did have every intention of using Sadonâs magic to conceive more children one day, but it could wait for a few more years; right now, caring for V was all they could handle.Â
âOh my godâŚâ Lady let out a delighted, girlish squeal at the sight of the closet. âYou saved the best for last, didnât you?!â She spun around, enjoying how huge and roomy the space was. The many outfits sheâd collected over the years would display beautifully here, with space left over for her jewelry, shoes, and other trinkets. âI love it!âÂ
âOh? You think this is the last part of the tour?â War pulled out a bottle of Ladyâs favorite wine and two glasses from behind a post. He had stowed it there when he explored the penthouse earlier. With a snap of his fingers, a blanket appeared on the floor. It was rather clear what he had in mind. This was their first night away from V in ages and it had been a good while since the two of them had made love. The Horseman winked at his wife and popped the cork easily with a long claw. Pouring her a glass first, he then purred suggestively in her ear, âThe penthouse is not properly christened until weâve had a bit of⌠fun⌠in it first.â
Lady was torn between wanting to burst out laughing and smothering her husband in kisses. How could she have doubted heâd have one more surprise up his sleeve? She took the offered glass of wine, and pulled him down to sit with her on the blanket.Â
âIt certainly isnât!â She lifted her glass. âTo our new home, and the new life weâll make for ourselves here.â Just as their glasses were about to clink, she added with a wicked grin, âOh, and to all the sex weâre going to have here.âÂ

War and Lady had been looking at larger penthouses for a good while. Some were luxurious, but not too spacey. Others were full of square footage, just not in the right part of the city. The instant turn off for his Lady was no balcony or access to rooftop. The Horseman wanted his lovely wife to have whatever her heart desired. Unfortunately, it looked like there was nothing here to suit her tastes. Luckily, he had one last card to play.
In the elevator ride up to the top, War had playfully blindfolded Lady. He assured her it was a surprise, and not a fetish for elevator sex. That, however, could be done in the future⌠maybe. Once the doors opened, the Horseman carefully guided his weather goddess into the penthouse. It had the bones set with enormous bedrooms, an en suite in the master, and a kitchen in the middle with an open concept floor. He had gone through the checklist and everything was on it, even the balcony. Rooftop access would be an easy fix if he installed a small, spiral staircase through a skylight window.
âOkay, just a few more steps, careful nowâŚâ War knew some of the sawdust and floorboards were still laying around and did not want her to trip. âAnd⌠okay. You can take off the blindfold now.â
It hadnât been easy to convince Lady to leave their new baby with Bernard for the day. Even though she knew her friend would take good care of Little V, she still grew antsy whenever the child was out of her sight. But War had sounded so excited about this surprise, and her curiosity had won out.Â
She moved lightly, following Warâs directions. Wherever they were, it was indoors, but still cold. She could smell wood, plaster, paint, metalâŚÂ
âAs my Lord commands.â Grinning, Lady slipped off the blindfold.Â
Once the blindfold was off, Lady would be able to see that this penthouse was not like the others the two of them had seen before. No, this one needed a lot of tender loving care. Nothing about it was luxurious just yet. The only thing it had going for it was the location which was in the heart of the city. This was the newest and biggest tower, named Echo-1, with all of the other condos finished and ready. However, the penthouse went into foreclosure and was never completed. The amount of work that had to be done turned most people away due to the cost of labor and the time it would take.
âItâs not what weâve normally seen butâŚâ Warâs voice held a tint of hope as he motioned to the giant windows which provided a delightful view of the city. There was room on the balcony for a pool and fire-pit if one so desired. The ceiling had skylights, the stars shining through at night. âThis is something we could make truly ours, with our personal touches. It just needs a bit of work, that I can do easily. I wanted to see what you thought.â He pulled out a binder full of pictures he collected of possible remodels that could be done. âSee? I even did my research.â
âOh my godâŚâ
Lady was completely stunned by the view. Sheâd told War she wanted a balcony, yes, but this was beyond anything sheâd imagined. And those windows! She could just imagine what the apartment would look like when it was finished. It would be as if there were nothing between them and the free, open sky.Â
âItâs everything I could ever want,â she replied to Warâs question. Love and delight shone clearly from her face, and she could barely look away from her husband to examine the pictures he wanted to show her.Â
âIt took a while to find the perfect place for my Lady,â War told her with a most pleased grin at her amazed tone. He felt so smug at her words. âItâs in foreclosure, but with the right price, it could be ours⌠if you want it. I want you to have whatever your heart desires, my beautiful goddess.â
He plucked out a few pictures of the kitchen types he had been looking at since it was at the center of the penthouse. Gathering the rest of the pictures, he used his magic to float them to the proper location. Taping them to the beams, the Horseman urged his lover to look at the choices. Granite, marble, paint, appliances, stovetops, cabinets, the list went on and on forever. There was so much out there to choose from, but he wanted Lady to do most of the deciding. He really did not have much to bring into a home except for a few items from Persia during his time.
He purred, giving her a kiss, âAnd of course⌠there is a Turkish bath option.â
He had meant it to be a light, tender kiss, but Lady caught him and turned it into a deep smooch. âI want it. Turkish bath included.â She wrapped her arm around War, cuddling close against him as she looked at the pictures heâd displayed.Â
âHmâŚâ Lady passed over the more modern designs, with their stark black and white and shiny metal. That style might fit for Harrison, who liked technology so much, but she preferred something warmer and more classical for her own home. Something that would bring back memories of her childhood, of a warm kitchen and good food-
Her face lit up as she saw one particular photo.Â
âIâm going to have to install a hideaway bed in every room if you keep kissing me like that.â War nipped at her bottom lip, giving her backside a pinch.
If Lady was not careful, War was sure heâd be tempted to take her right then and there on the floor. She had a way of turning him on with those kisses of hers. At least she seemed quite satisfied with the place he had found. When his weather goddess said that she wanted the penthouse, War snapped his fingers, the contract for foreclosure appearing in thin air. All the two of them had to do was sign, produce the money, and the place would be theirs. Yet first, he wanted her to see the rest of the floor plan.
When his wife expressed her interest in the kitchen design, the Horseman smiled and said, âWhatever you like or if there is something you wanted specifically or want to change⌠I can build it for you. I might have been a general in a past life but I still know how to build a few things here and there. The rest, of course, Iâll have done professionally.â
âWho needs a bed?â Lady grinned wickedly, wiggling her butt into his touch. Since little V had come into their lives, their nights had been mostly occupied with taking care of a hungry, fussy newborn, and she was tempted to forget the pictures for now and take advantage of the two of them being alone. âWe can just hop up on one of these gorgeous counters once we put them in.â
She managed to rein in her hormones for now, and went back to looking at designs. âI might go for some different wood colors, and maybe a more colorful backsplash. But overall, I really do like this kitchen as it is. With the bar, we can even have family dinners in there.â She smiled at the thought of gathering around that counter with their children.Â
âAs for building it, I donât mind having the work done by professionals. But Iâll also love any touches that you want to do yourself. Itâs your home too, Ardeshir.âÂ
â⌠right, we donât need a bed.â War agreed as his Lady grinded against him and now the temptation was as strong as ever. His fingers itched to pull her flush against him for a passionate make-out session before making love to her. He thought she was wearing those black, lacy panties he loved to take off with his teethâ no, no, they had to stay on point. The Horseman listened when Lucienne spoke of the different colors of wood and the backsplash. He really did not want everything to be white. Actually, heâd love it if the bedroom could be at least red in some way. Maybe some Persian accents here and there would not be so bad, especially the rugs and drapes, not to mention a mountain of pillows. Though he would not pass up the chance to flirt a bit, winking at his lover. âCounter, couch, whatever you fancy, my Lady.â
When she mentioned it was going to be family dinners and his home as well, War couldnât help but smile lovingly at her. âMaybe a couple of things from my homeland, love⌠perhaps earthy tones in the bedroom with a tint of red? Nothing too over the top, I promise.â
Lady nodded, smiling back at him. âI think that would be perfect. If we go with a layout like this for the bedroom,â she pointed to a picture of a master bedroom with a high, vaulted ceiling, skylights, and a door out to the balcony, âweâll have plenty of light coming in, so we wonât have to worry about the colors being too dark.âÂ
âI agree, I think that would be a good idea to have the high ceilings.â War pointed to the chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. He knew his wife had a deep love of bling and shiny things. Though no gem or jewel could ever hope to compare to her true beauty, inside and out. âI could put those in if you like. Or would you prefer a canopy bed with some drapes? You already know I have a weakness for those big, plush comfortable pillows.â The Horseman reminded her, âPoisonweb can make magnificent clothes, but Iâm sure she wouldnât object to a bit of customized home dĂŠcor either.â
He gestured to the balcony with a big grin, leading Lady out onto it. The wind whipped in her hair and the city lights shone below. The view of the night sky was absolutely breathtaking. âNow⌠how do you feel about a pool out on this massive balcony? Perhaps a fire pit, where we can roast some marshmallows, make some sâmores, and I can lick the leftover chocolate off of your lips.â
Lady drew in a deep breath, enjoying the feel of the wind enveloping her. This was perhaps as close as she could come to flying while still keeping her feet on the ground, and it told her more than ever that this was the right place for her and her family.Â

He had meant it to be a light, tender kiss, but Lady caught him and turned it into a deep smooch. âI want it. Turkish bath included.â She wrapped her arm around War, cuddling close against him as she looked at the pictures heâd displayed.Â
âHm...â Lady passed over the more modern designs, with their stark black and white and shiny metal. That style might fit for Harrison, who liked technology so much, but she preferred something warmer and more classical for her own home. Something that would bring back memories of her childhood, of a warm kitchen and good food-
Her face lit up as she saw one particular photo.Â

âI imagine you in something expensive, classy, and probably French. Â Something that evokes an old school Hollywood glamour but is completely unique in color and cut to set off that luscious white hair of yours. Â What do you think of this?â
Ladyâs face lit up with glee. âItâs gorgeous! Very classy.âÂ
Baby on Board: Future Set
âThe directions should be on the canister,â Lady replied. âThe main thing is to make sure your hands and everything else are clean, and never microwave the formula.â She wondered if War could use his heat powers to safely warm up the bottle. Well, sheâd test it before she fed Little V.Â
As she settled into the soft, padded rocking chair, Lady swallowed a sudden rush of grief. Eila had picked out this chair herself, down to the soft red upholstery, and she would never have the chance to use it. Having her child to care for had eased the loss of Ladyâs young friend a little, but it hadnât erased it. Only time would heal that loss.Â
Lady cuddled the baby close, trying not to let her pain show. Instead, she focused on little Vâs presence. How tiny, alive, and safe he was. How much she loved him. How she would never, ever let any harm come to him.Â
After making sure his hands were thoroughly washed and dried, War read the side of the can. The directions were pretty straightforward. This stuff smelled absolutely awful and called for purified water, a specific temperature, and of course, there were only a billion other brands of this crap out there if Vâs stomach did not necessarily agree with it. Sighing, the Horseman carefully measured the scoop, added the water, and shook the bottle until he could not see any powder clumps. He warmed the bottle with his hand instead of sticking it in a pot full of hot water. It was simpler this way.
Joining Lady in the nursery, War handed her the bottle.
âItâs⌠well⌠itâs been quite some time since Iâve taken care of a little one.â The Horseman rubbed the back of his neck as he watched Lady test the temperature before giving V his food. âI mean, I never had to feed the kids, Mohana did that cause she obviously had the boobs, but I have changed diapers and clothes, and dealt with tantrums and not to mention the puking and, wait I did get the right size of diapers didnât I? All sorts of stuff to make it so complicated, I donât even know where to⌠urghâŚâ He ran a hand down his face with a soft chuckle, obviously rambling from nervousness. âItâs things like this that make me miss my little sister⌠sheâd at least have an inkling of where to start.â He then looked at Lady, a soft frown on his face. â⌠shit, do you even think Iâll be a good dad to him? I want to be a good father, I certainly donât want to treat V like my father did to me. Iâd rather have Death impale me than do that.â
Lady took the warm bottle, and fitted the nipple to Vâs lips. He latched on easily, and cuddled close against her body as he enjoyed his meal. Part of Lady ached to know that she wouldnât be able to nurse her child from her own breast; her milk had stopped shortly before theyâd met Eila, and even if sheâd still been lactating, there was no certainty that glaupunk milk would be suitable for a human infant.Â
Still, she thought as she stroked the drowsy Vâs back, this will be enough.Â
She smiled up at her nervous husband. âIf youâre determined not to do it, then you wonât, Ardeshir. You know what makes a good father, even if you didnât have one yourself.âÂ
Lady bit her lip as she continued to rock back and forth with V. âI just hope I can be a good mother. Iâve wanted children for a long time, but I still donât have much experience with them. And this little one ⌠heâs so fragile. What if I hurt him somehow?âÂ
âLucienne, look at me,â War gently held her chin, meeting her eyes. He feared turning into his father while she worried about being a proper mother. The two of them were in this together and would do their best. There were going to be times when mistakes were made, things went wrong, and frustrations would take hold, but that was all part of being a parent. At least he had a little experience under his belt⌠even it was over 2000 years ago. âYouâre already wonderful with Devin. Youâre already great with little kids who visit the museum. Youâre going to be a fantastic mother.â
The Horseman chuckled lightly, but did not dismiss Ladyâs concern. âMy Lady, humans are a lot tougher than you give them credit for. I survived a lot in my younger days, including getting thrown from a horse, kicked by one, and stepped on⌠I could go on. There are times heâs going to get hurt and we canât stop that but, youâll do just fine. I highly doubt youâre going to hurt him⌠okay?â
The fear wasnât gone, but Warâs words did a lot to tamp it back. Lady smiled, and leaned into his touch. âOkay.âÂ
It wasnât much longer before V had finished his meal. With the warm milk in his belly, and Ladyâs gentle stroking and rocking, the baby was ready to fall asleep, but Lady knew there was one thing they needed to do first.Â
Cradling V against her shoulder, she fetched a burping cloth, and draped it over her shoulder. With Warâs guidance, she was able to coax a squeaky, surprisingly loud burp from the sleepy infant.Â
Lady giggled softly. âMaybe we should catch a nap ourselves, once heâs asleep?âÂ

Baby on Board: Future Set
The lightning coursing through Caineâs body did not affect Carnage. With his thick skin and metal bones, it merely sparked and popped before returning to the gang leaderâs flesh. Saying nothing, Carnage let Lady do what she wished. Her friend was dead. If this was how she needed to deal with her grief, then so be it. This was more her quest than his, but he would be more than happy to aid her in the torment of the murderer of children. Zap after zap, Caine shrieked and twisted, muscles contracting and bones snapping. It did not bother Carnage, in fact, it gave him a demented pleasure. Those who hurt others who could not defend themselves, deserved this kind of torture.
Once Lady finished inflicting her wrath upon the man, Carnage purred as the weather witch happily turned over the reins to him.
âYou know, since you tried to gut that poor little woman,â Carnage held up a single, black claw for emphasis. âThat perhaps that should be your fate as well, child murderer.â
Yet Carnage possessed no mercy, especially not a killer of little ones. Even he, a beast of annihilation, would never turn a claw on an innocent. There were lines that should not be crossed and Caine, unfortunately, made the fatal mistake of stepping across it.

The day had finally arrived where little V was all theirs. The boy was in perfect health and quiet as a mouse the entire way back to the penthouse. It was sort of ironic that the same day he and Lady went to fetch the little tyke was the day that the police announced to the public about the gang members and the mutilated leader found in the basement. Something tore him apart, the police had said it had to be the work of a wild animal. It was funny to think a bear or a lion or something of the sort could be roaming the streets.
Oh, if only those ignorant bastards knewâŚ
âHow is he?â War asked as he slowly opened the door while carrying a horde of bags. Little V was nestled warmly in Ladyâs arms as the Horseman tried to make as little noise as possible. âHeâs been pretty quiet.â
âI think heâs just curious,â Lady reassured him. She turned the warmly-wrapped bundle in her arms so that War could see Vâs face. Sure enough, the little boy was wide awake, and watching his surroundings with that mix of awe and puzzlement only babies can manage.Â
To honor his motherâs wishes, they had not given him just any common âVâ name. Lady had thought of her friend Vice, who had taken her in and helped her get on on her feet after she left the Doom Syndicate, much the same way she and War had done for Eila, and had known right away that the name was perfect. However, since it was so unusual, theyâd decided to make it his middle name, and had given him the first name Gabriel, after his mother.Â
To War and Lady, though, he remained their Little V.Â
âI still want to get him inside, though. And heâs probably ready for another feeding.â Already, Lady was looking forward to the thought of giving their child his first meal in their home.Â
To say the Horseman was nervous was an understatement. It had been so long since War handled a newborn baby. Mohana was one thing, her children was another, but this little tyke, he was his son. Adopted or not, little V was solely his responsibility now. There was so much to prepare and no matter how much experience he did have, War knew this would be different. Lady and V were his family and he had to make sure to do his best.
Setting down the bags in the nursery, War had done everything he could to be ready for Vâs arrival while Lady stayed at the hospital, watching over him diligently. There was a crib, a diaper changing station, a dresser for baby clothes, and a cushioned rocking chair. The Horseman thought it would be a good investment, especially if sleepless nights were going to be a part of their lives soon enough. Hopefully, little V would settle into a routine easily.
Pulling out the chair for Lady, he motioned for her to sit with a small grin.
âI did what I could, love. Weâll go shopping for more stuff later, yeah?â War then told her. âTell me what to do with this formula stuff and Iâll make it up for you. We did not have this kind of stuff when my sister had her kids.â He pulled the package out of the bag labeled âEnfamilâ. This was going to be a tedious thing from what he gathered from the nurses. Some babies took to formula, some did not. He could only hope little Vâs stomach was not going to be too sensitive. It would be a nightmare if it was.
âThe directions should be on the canister,â Lady replied. âThe main thing is to make sure your hands and everything else are clean, and never microwave the formula.â She wondered if War could use his heat powers to safely warm up the bottle. Well, sheâd test it before she fed Little V.Â

Baby on Board: Future Set
Lady didnât even bother to speak to him. What else was there to say? He had to know why she and Carnage were there, and she had no words for this child-murdering piece of filth.Â
She could kill him instantly, if she aimed her lightning strike at his heart. Lady had never intentionally murdered anyone, but sheâd shocked plenty of people in battle, enough to know how the human body would respond. But she was in no mood to be merciful now.Â
âTurn him over.âÂ
Carnage obligingly rolled the man over. Caine, realizing what he was in for, tried desperately to crawl free. âDoppler, I swear, I didnât knowâŚI didnât mean-â
âSHUT UP!â Ladyâs rage was too great even for her to zap him. She simply kicked Caine in the face, hard, breaking bone and teeth. âYou did know! She was a child, and you murdered her!âÂ
With every word, she struck him with a blast of lightning. Face, groin, stomach, every sensitive but non-fatal place she could think of. It didnât take long before she stopped saying words, and was simply screaming in rage and grief with every strike. Caine would have screamed too, but a well-placed lightning bolt had locked up his throat.Â
Finally, with the gang leader a charred and broken mess at her feet, Lady raised her hands. She was ready to finish him off, but even now, lightning would be too merciful.Â
She turned to Carnage, eyes still glowing. âYour turn.âÂ
