First off, a book is rarely “finished.” It’s just that various factors weigh in to make you stop fiddle-farting around with it. Second, never ask anyone who’s just finished a book if they’re happy with it, because the answer is always IT’S AWFUL MY CAREER IS OVER GET AWAY FROM ME I WILL TEAR YOUR FUCKING HEART OUT AND EAT IT IN FRONT OF YOU. There’s a terrible space between the conclusion of the copy-editing and the release of the thing where you’re convinced that it’s a rotten piece of work and you’re going to be Found Out and everything is over. You start telling the wall — because you don’t know anybody any more, because you’ve been indoors for months destroying a laptop with your crap — that if you only had another six months, if you could just alter a couple of things, if you could just maybe take out and replace a plotline, and maybe the main plot, and all the characters, and change the title, and write a whole different book, then everything would be fine.

Just Write a Story

I’ve been doing this for a couple months now, and it seems like one of the most difficult things for writers is making decisions. While someone can guide you and help you make an informed decision, those decisions are yours alone. The good news is that your decisions are not irreversible. 

The problem is when you get caught up in the fear of making the wrong choice. You’re afraid that your decision might mean a less interesting plot, a less sympathetic main character, a confusing back story, or some other unfortunate problem. So you hesitate to make your decisions, because you want to avoid these outcomes at all costs. 

What it boils down to is this: Don’t write the story. Just write a story. When you’re struggling to make a key decision with your plot, choose one and write a story. When choosing, you can consider the pros and cons, consider which direction is most appealing to you, or (if all else fails) flip a coin. Writing becomes a lot easier if you take the decision making out of the process. Rather than agonizing over it or asking others to make your decisions, spend less time making decisions and move forward. 

It seems risky, but it’s really not. Let’s look at the alternative. If you hold off on making decisions in your story, this is what will happen.

Point A: Indecisive on which path to take in your story

Point B: Ask for opinions; get potentially conflicting opinions, or else no opinion at all. Wait for inspiration to tell you what to do.

Point C: Still indecisive on which path to take in your story

Point A and Point C are the same. You haven’t moved forward. So what happens if you throw caution to the wind and decide?

Point A: Indecisive on which path to take in your story

Point B: Pick a path quickly and write a story.

Point C: If it’s the right path, wonderful! If it’s the wrong path, you know it’s the wrong path and can pursue the opposite path in a new story. 

You may not ever know which will be best. And honestly, what defines what is “best” anyway? What your readers think? What critics think? These will never be universal. What is universal is what you think. If you go in a direction that other people say is awesome and you think is boring, you’re not going to get anywhere. 

So start by making your decisions based on what you want. More importantly, make them quickly and get writing.

Spent the day finding plot holes and planning their demise. They will die horrible yet imaginative deaths.
