The Llavanderes, frightening washerwomen who live in caves and hollowed-out tree trunks, are tasked with washing the blood-stained clothes of the dead.
Stories about these unusual old women abound across western Europe. Some say they wash the clothes of the recently deceased, others that they prepare the burial shrouds of those about to die, and others still speak of them drowning those who refuse to aid them in their work.
Once every hundred years a kite will lay a red egg from which hatches a black and white bird. When that bird dies, a green worm-like creature emerges from its body and will grow into the fearsome Rooster of Death. Anyone who hears the call of this Rooster will die the following day unless they can find a mysterious blue herb that grows in the wilds of Asturias.

Diañu Saltón, the jumping devil, appears to weary travelers in the form of a white horse. It deceives you by offering to carry you on its back and give your tired legs a break. Once you’re on its back, however, it will bolt towards the nearest cliff and jump off, killing you both
The Sumiciu is a peculiar house-spirit from Asturias. These ravenous creatures are often blamed for the disappearance of household items and are known to swallow and disappear whatever they get their hands on. With an all-consuming void for a mouth they eat and eat and are never sated. Their true, ghostly form remains a mystery as they are never seen by mortal eyes.
Round the sacred yew trees in the great wilds of Asturias, Lord Busgosu, the great spirit of the forest, leads the fay-folk in their night-time revelry. The satyr-like deity protects the forest-people from any humans who find themselves lost in the sacred woods, guiding them safely home.
In the northern regions of Spain, fair xanas dwell in hidden caves near waterfalls and springs, guarded by a great cuelebre. Her cave is filled with the treasures and relics of the great old moros, fairy giants who once ruled Asturias until they were forced into hiding in the spirit realm.
The xana gives birth to young spirits called xaninos. When a xanin is born, the xana wanders from her cave, seeking a human infant to swap with her own. The human mother is left to raise a cursed xanin while, unbeknownst to her, her child is taken away to live amongst the fair spirits and hidden things.

Great Lord Dionysus travelled deep into the depths of Hades disguised as his half-brother Heracles with the aim of resurrecting the playwright Euripides. Charon, the ferryman of the dead, aided him by ferrying him part of the way, but as they neared the shore they were swarmed by the great frogs of Hades. Their rhythmic cry of "Brekekekex-koax-koax" greatly irritated Dionysus.

Born to the god Poseidon and the sea-nymph Thoosa, Polyphemus dwelt on the far-off island of the cyclops with his one-eyed kin. He was a dutiful shepherd and skilled lyrist who once tried, and failed, to seduce the nymph Galatea.
He is perhaps best known for his confrontation with the Ithacan King Odysseus, also called Ulysses, who visited the island of the Cyclops on his way home from Troy. Odysseus and his men ransacked Polyphemus' food-stores and so Polyphemus trapped them in his cave, planning to devour them all. Cunning Odysseus then tricked Polyphemus, getting him drunk on wine until he passed out before blinding him with a wooden stake to the eye.
Odysseus and his men escaped the island of the cyclops but not without incurring the wrath of Poseidon who decides to continuously blow them off course as revenge for the violence done to his beloved cyclopean son.
When King Peleus and the Nereid Thetis were married, they threw a lavish wedding to which all the gods were invited except Eris, goddess of discord. In anger, she crafted a golden apple on which was inscribed "For the fairest" and threw it among the wedding guests. Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite began to squabble over who deserved the apple, and so Eris, nurse of war, set in motion the events that would lead to the bloody Trojan war and the fall of Ilium.
Modwen, an Irish noblewoman by birth, traveled to England and became a Nun, eventually founding Burton Abbey in Staffordshire. Among the many miraculous deeds attributed to her, she is said to have tamed a ferocious wolf who was terrorizing a local village and devouring her cattle. Following the holy woman's intervention, the wolf would instead protect the cattle, standing guard over their pastures.
Isaiah, a prophet of the Lord Yahweh received a vision from his god of a host of Seraphim, the great six-winged "burning ones" who served the Lord. One of the Seraphim flew down to him, touched his mouth, and cleansed him of his sins. His Lord then commanded him to go forth and spread the word of God.
The great witch of the Thrice Ninth-Tsardom, the dreadful Baba Yaga of the bony-leg lives in the enchanted forest in her chicken-legged hut. She flies around in a giant mortar which she steers with a giant pestle and decorates the forest with the heads of her victims.
Hans Trapp is a frightful being said to emerge on Christmas to terrorize misbehaving children. He was once a proud Knight named Hans von Trotha who turned to foul magic and cannibalism. As punishment, God transformed him into a scarecrow and cursed him to eternally wander the Palatinate woods of Southern Germany.
Little Snegurochka, the Snow Maiden, lived in the forest with Father Frost and the fairy-folk. She went to the village to play with the human girls at jumping over a small fire, as is custom on St. Johns Day, but when Snegurochka's turn came she turned into steam and became a small cloud.
Other tales tell of how she fell in love with a shepherd-boy, but the warming of her heart caused her body to melt into a puddle.
