so, let me get this straight: people over on twitter (which is always a cesspool but i digress) started by accusing hudson of queerbaiting because he (allegedly) has a girlfriend, which is wild for numerous reasons, never mind the fact that a real human person can’t queerbait, fully dismissing that he has not publicly talked about his sexuality or other parts of his private life (which he doesn’t have to??), then realised that maybe there are orientations outside of gay and straight (took them long enough considering one of the main characters of the show is famously bisexual) and are now heralding him is a bi king, when, again, he himself has not spoken about this? at what point do these people realise they seriously need to chill or is that outside the realm of possibility?

Me concluding, after considering all the facts provided to me, that Connor Storrie is some flavour of queer is not a crime or even invasive, it’s me picking up what he’s putting down. What I’m NOT gonna do is hound him about it because he doesn’t owe me or any of us shit.

What I am trying to say is that “don’t assume people’s sexuality” is a cop out and actually means “always assume everyone is straight”. It’s used to reproduce and reinforce the very same heteronormative patterns of thinking we as a community have been fighting against for decades.

On top of that, I would like to add that coming out isn’t a prerequisite for being out. People aren’t obligated to spell out their sexuality or gender identity for anyone but even if they don’t it doesn’t mean they’re not living their lives as such. Never in the almost three decades of my existence have I “come out” to anyone in the common sense of the term and yet I am living my life as an out queer person.

So my message here is twofold:

Stop pressuring actors to publicly announce their sexuality

Stop crucifying people for picking up on context clues and theorising

And while we’re at it: “Queer actors for queer roles!” doesn’t mean that every single actor that has ever played a queer character should be obligated to disclose their sexuality, it means that out queer actors should be CAST! Because, despite the common assumption, Hollywood is far from a grand progressive utopia. Queer actors are still not getting cast at nearly the same rate as straight actors, which is a problem that needs to be addressed. That is also one of the reasons queer actors might choose to (at least publicly) stay in the closet.

Heated Rivalry is a queer show written, directed and produced by a gay man, based off of books written by a bisexual woman. And if you’re looking for out queer actors, François Arnaud is right there. Everything about this show is unequivocally queer, it doesn’t matter how Hudson and Connor identify. At the same time it is also okay to identify context clues and theorise about whether people are queer or not. Thank you for your attention.
