The Gaming Control board will grant licenses to five stand-alone slots parlors in locations throughout the state of Pennsylvania, including Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Two more licenses will be issued to parlors within resorts. The remaining seven are to be awarded to horse racing tracks.
Although the application deadline is closing, slots licensing will not be immediate. The horse racing tracks are not expecting to receive their license from the Gaming Control Board until late in the summer. The other establishments will not possess a license until sometime later than the racetracks.
Pennsylvania slots licensing is no longer a local concern. Two out-of-state businesses have already expressed interest in the Pittsburgh licensing alone. Isle of Capri Casino Inc., of Biloxi, Mississippi, is planning a venture including the National Hockey League’s Pittsburgh Penguins and Ohio’s Nationwide Realty Investors. The huge casino project includes plans for a new home for the NHL Team.
Isle of Capri’s president and CEO, Tim Hinkley, expressed his company’s commitment to the process. National involvement does not cease with Isle of Capri. Forest City Enterprises of Cleveland and Harrah’s Entertainment of Las Vegas are involved in a joint effort requiring a Pittsburgh stand-alone license. Detroit is thrown into the mix through businessman Don Barden and Chester, West Virginia finds inclusion through MTR Gaming.
