25 Days To Go.

With 25 days until the deadline for my final major study at university the pressure is really on! There's still lots of things that I'd like to create for the deadline and over the next few weeks I'll be working hard to achieve that so hopefully you'll be able to see some of those things in the near future!

Right now I'm working on the roughs for a picture book about a little girl and her best friend, who just so happens to be her teddy bear! I'm having a great time illustrating all the fun things they get up to together.

At some point I plan to make this into a fully bound picture book which I can show at some exciting events that are planned in the following months. More on that later!

Hello lovely people!

A few weeks ago I completed my work for the YCN brief that I had been working on for the past couple of months.

I am really pleased with the outcome which combines both traditional and digital ways of working. This is something I found worked really well for me and I definitely aim to incorporate into my work in the future!

For this project I also created a typeface of my handwriting; a complicated and long winded process due to bad software which needs updating (that means YOU scanfont!). However in the end I was happy with the result even though it doesn't actually look that much like my real handwriting which is usually joint up, it still has nice qualities!

Some typography work I've been working on recently! The idea ties in with my entry for the YCN Student Awards with the idea of stitching around the letters. I'll be sharing more info about my idea for the 'Bear' brief in the near future once all the box designs are ready! 

Meet 'Bear', my new character which all the content of the cereal box backs will be based upon! Another quick example of some of the work I've been doing for this project. I've been trying to challenge myself to not be such a perfectionist and obsessed with staying in the lines and everything looking so 'finished' as this tends to take a bit of the life out of my work.

To achieve this I've been really inspired by the likes of Sarah Maycock and Catherine Rayner who create absolutely beautiful work using loose lines and what I would describe as an 'unfinished' approach which is so effective. See below for their work!

Time to start work on a new project! I am on the cusp of my final major study at university. This module will be the most important and work-heavy set of projects I will undertake during my time at BIAD. 

I am still in the process of planning exactly what these projects will be, however I have decided to enter the YCN Student Awards and will be working on the brief for Bear. The project is to create a new set of cereal boxes for their 'Alphabites' which will be appealing to children. This jumped out to me as I am most happy when working on things that are geared towards a young audience. I will post some of my ideas soon once the ball is rolling!

I've been working on lots of different animal characters recently for a picture book I'm putting together. Here's a couple of images of a rather self-obsessed peacock!
