When I started to do my abstracts and annotations, unfortunately they took about as long as I expected they would. Because there aren’t that many I took a long time to go through and pick things that I could write about for the rest of the project. The thing that was pleasantly surprising was that the criticisms I found examined the same aspects of the book that I noticed myself. This made it easy to pick passages from the book. because these were the parts that I noticed on my own during the reading.

That’s cool that your criticisms helped you a lot. Mine was the total opposite, although the articles gave me some good information, it wasn’t nearly as much as I needed. But I had limited criticism options because of the book I chose, so I did the best with what I got. You’re lucky you had good criticism!

Researching the Work part 4

Status update: all I have left to do is the introduction the annotations, the general intro, and two more background resources. This sounds like more than I’ve mentally conceptualized but I do have a page and a half of my general intro started as well as a strong idea of where I want it to go so that’s a pretty good chunk out of there. Yea writing all my annotations in one day did not work out, they took wayyy longer than I imagined; I could only really crank out one a day. But that’s also because I thought they had to be 2-3 pages when really that was just the intro to the annotations. That honestly cost me more time than you would imagine. Hopefully it’ll add a little positive weight to my project, though. Writing the intro to the annotations actually scares me more than the general introduction because I’m worried about just repeating stuff from my individual annotations. ((If anyone has a finished and approved copy of their that I can’t take a quick peak at then I would be soooo grateful.))

The same thing happened to me, the annotations took much longer than expected and it set me back farther than my original plans. Also the same thing with my intro to annotations, it feels like im just repeating the same few sentences over and over again and I’m not digging deep enough, but with my book honestly I’m not sure what else there is to say about it. But Maddy we are the same person I wish you the best of luck!!!!!!

Research #5

I just finished writing my general introduction and I’m so happy I can’t even explain it! It started out pretty shaky, but once I got into it, it turned out really well. I think at that point, I was most concerned with my voice because I really wanted it to come out in the writing and I think it did a lot! I guess we’ll see tomorrow but I couldn’t be more thrilled that I’m done!

I totally understand, finishing my general introduction was the greatest feeling ever. I also had trouble finding my voice in it and I’m afraid I probably didn’t add as much voice as I could have.

General Introduction

If I did this right, and I pray I did, then I’ve gotta say it wasn’t as bad as I thought. It was easier talking about my experience with the book than anything else. There were also a lot of parts of my criticism I wanted to comment on so I was glad I got a chance to do that. The biggest struggle for me was connecting all the different points I made.

Research 5

Writing the intro to annotations was probably the hardest part of the project for me. I sat at my computer for hours, just staring at a blank page, because I didn’t even know where to start. Finally I just started writing anything that came to my mind down, and then went back and tried to piece it all together after. My biggest problem is that I feel like I keep repeating the same phrases over and over again. My annotations and intro to annotations are very similar and I hope thats the way everybody else’s turned out too.

I would like to talk about my conversation that I had with the librarian at the Oakland University Library When I first went up to her to try and find my criticism for Franny and Zooey she automatically had a smile on her face Right when I sat down she automatically said, “That is my favorite book” Now I was not done with the book yet but I wanted to have a conversation with her about the book because I felt like she would have some insight I then went on to ask her about the book, “I’m not done with it yet but I really like it I just hope that it is going somewhere important> It is going to right?” She then gave another smile and continued on to say, “Well, Salinger always had a smaller purpose in his writing than most authors in my opinion but yes it does have a bigger meaning at the end” She then started asking me if I liked it and how long I have been reading it and I explained to her my project and why I was at the library and how all of my class is actually learning how to use a library now She really thought it was a great idea of how all of the elements of the paper come together She then showed me a criticism book on catcher in the rye She thought it would really help me with my project and at first I didn’t think it would, “Does that relate to Franny and Zooey at all though, isn’t thast kind of pointless?” She then said, “Well you will soon find out that a lot of Salinger’s characters have the same characteristics in different books Holden is a lot like Zooey and has a lot of the same aspects as him” I found it interesting enough so I looked through it and ended up copying a few of the pages I then went a little stalkerish and found her profile on the OU website so I put her picture with this Now that I think about it it is really weird but she gave me some really good insight over all about the book

Research 4

So I finally finished all my annotations. Once I finally sat down and just picked passages, it wasn't as bad as I thought. But writing the page about what I annotated felt kind of awkward to me. I definitely prefer annotating on paper with highlighters and little notes on the sides than writing a full on paper about it. My writing at this part seems kind of awkward and I think I’ll have to go through and smooth out my writing so it sounds a little bit more interesting.

Metafiction

So the first character I thought of when asked in class, “what fictional character would you take to prom?” Was Danny Cordova, from the book Shakespeare’s Secret. If you were on Team Yoda in fifth grade, you understand the love for this guy. In the book he’s supposed to be this dark haired, popular, super hot fifteen year old boy, (remember I was in fifth grade while reading this) and everyone loved him. He was the first fictional character I can remember fan-girling over. Although I barely remember what actually happens in the book, I’ll always remember the feels I have for him. So if Danny Cordova and I were the same age now and he was available for prom, I would definitely take him. (sorry this sounds so creepy it’s actually really weird writing about this lol)

Research 3

I’ve finally sat down to do my annotations. Yes, I’m a little behind but I think I can make it work. The hardest part for me is choosing which passages to annotate because the writing style stays fairly the same the entire book, there’s no real changing points that showcase any different types of writing in it. And my criticism’s don’t exactly focus on anything specific in the book either, just the overall writing style. I think I’m going to reread some parts of the book to try and get a better idea of which parts of the writing I should be annotating.

Research 2

So after having a mini freakout that I only had 2 usable criticism’s, I asked my sister at Grand Valley University to check out the library there for me. Again, no books but she did email me some pretty good articles that I should be able to use.I asked her to send me a selfie of her in the GVSU library that I could post but she said that would be weird so again I’m left without posting a picture. Anyways, I’ve found that It’s really easy to find background information on my book but criticism, not so much!

Research 1

To find my criticism’s I went to the OU Library with Alyssa Smith and Andrew G. I it would be tough to find criticism  on my book so I went straight to librarian when I got there. She was really young and nice but the classic quiet librarian. Of course there were no books to check out for me, but she did spend like a half hour looking through articles online for me and even printed them out for me to take home. Although she only found me two usable criticisms, she also gave me a really good background information article. After she helped me with my stuff, I waited with andrew g to get his stuff. Then we proceeded  to find his books and have a full on photo shoot in the library to prove that we actually went. Unfortunately, my phone sucks and deleted all my pictures so I have nothing cool to post here :(

Reading the Work #5

I find the flashbacks with his mother and family very interesting because they are not apart of his life at all now. When he goes to the park and talks to the lady on the bench, he recalls when he was little and his mom was pregnant with his sister. There are many times in the novel when Charlie refers back to his mother and gets upset, and in the case of the park, chokes someone. It kind of reminds me of Of Mice and Men how Lennie continuously gets upset and accidentally hurts people. Again, I feel bad for Charlie, and I want to know why his family left him.

Reading the Work #3

At this point in the book, the experiments have been working on Charlie and he is increasing productivity in his work at the bakery. He seems happier and things have been looking up which made me feel a lot better about the book. I do find it very creepy though that Charlie and Alice went on a date. I can’t tell if she actually likes him or is just using him, either way it seems kind of inappropriate.

Reading the Work #4

Charlie losing his job was pretty hard to read, because that was one of the few things that made him normal. He didn’t really do anything wrong in the situation and did not deserve to be fired. A few reports later Charlie describes seeing a teenage boy in the park and how he chased him. I found this a little bit confusing because I’m not sure if this actually happened, or was a hallucination side affect from the operation. Overall, the operation has been doing Charlie well except for now, his intellectual intelligence has surpassed his emotional intelligence. Charlie thinks he has feelings for Alice, but the seizes when she kisses him. I feel bad for him because nobody can understand what he’s going through or how to handle his life now.

Reading the Work #2

So I’m a little deeper into the book now and honestly, it’s making me sad. The narrator, Charlie, describes how a bunch of doctors are doing different tests on him and a lab mouse, Algernon, and the mouse always wins. The book almost makes me frustrated because I just want to reach out and help Charlie and explain to him what’s really happening. At this point, I’m not sure if they way the doctors are treating Charlie is humane but I will continue to read.
