A we wrap up Black History month, I invite you all to attend The Akoma: The Celebration of Black History Month Film Screening of "Middle of Nowhere" in Essex County, NJ this Wednesday. The intent for this film is to spark dialogue regarding the images of People from the Diaspora in the film industry, the struggles of being an African American filmmaker and open discussion on the prison system in conjunction with the global black family. Olivia Pope

Many people including publicists are hooked on the tv drama, Scandal. However, as publicists we struggle with the question, does she properly represent the typical publicist? While she works very hard on fixing her clients' image and keeping many crises at bay, we can all admit that she goes a little too far at times.

Actually helping people hide and dispose of bodies, rescuing possible dangerous strays off the street to hire and never having a social life is where it all gets a little misconstrued.

I really hope people do their research on the daily duties and tasks of publicists. It's not as glamorous as Olivia makes it seem. You most likely will not be attending White House galas, you won't be dressing as flawlessly (not right away anyway) and you hopefully won't be burying bodies for anyone. Let us pray. 

Now I absolutely LOVE Olivia Pope and "Scandal," but let's all just remember that being a successful publicist means a lot of research, a lot of calls and sitting at the computer, networking events and a ton of socializing as well.

My advice, if this is something you really want to do for a living, shadow someone, get an internship and speak with someone in the field that you admire. Do your research!
