Troika: Black Dust #1-5, 2013

In the ‘Black Dust’ series the dense black particles deposited on the paper trace the pattern of the air flow in gradations from dark to light. Soot particles generated from cheap paraffin candles are passed over objects that have been placed on white paper.
The layering of the surface is three-dimensional in its density, but can be carried away on your breath.
Following their series of drawings with electric discharge, ‘Black Dust’ reveals the natural patterns of soot combustion and convection to produce a definitive mark. The results are reminiscent of primordial states of matter, the dense black and white evoking quantum states of energy.
With these works, in a time where everything is in constant flux, where computers allow us to retrace and erase our steps, there is no possibility of erasing, thus the necessity of considering if another step should be taken.
‘Black Dust’ was premiered at OMR as one of 5 new works shown in Troika’s solo exhibtion ‘The far side of reason’ in April 2013.
