The ZA-Royale was intense, to say the least. While other places may have had the kindness of at least waiting until trainers locked eyes, here there was no such mercy. Trainers would jump each other, trying to get the upper hand and climb the ranks. It was nearly impossible to walk down the street without joining a battle or catching strays from someone elseās. People didnāt mean to hurt each other, battling was for the Pokemon to do, after all, but some injuries were expected. Most nights, you returned to the hotel late, exhausted, and covered in scratches. Then you would wake up the next day, run āerrandsā for the Rust Syndicate, and return to the Royale that evening.
AZ was encouraging, especially in the beginning. At first, it had only been a thought in the back of his mind, a small maybe. Maybe you were strong enough. Maybe you could succeed where he had failed. Maybe you could fix what he had broken three thousand years ago.
As time passed, it had become clear to himāto all of team MZ, reallyāthat you were strong. Probably the strongest trainer he had ever encountered. Your skill with your Pokemon was unmatched. You would be the one to wield Mega Floette. However, it had also become apparent that you had absolutely zero self-preservation skills and your self-care wasā¦ similarly lacking. Many nights, AZ would stay up, long past when he would have normally gone to bed, and wonder if maybe all this was wrong. If he was pushing too hard. Expecting too much.
It was on one of these nights, when he was sitting in a chair too small and contemplating on tasks too large, that a crash sounded from somewhere in the lobby. Odd. He expected you to have already returned for the night. You usually slipped upstairs quietly, not long before sunrise.
Floette was faster than him, floating rather gracefully out the door and into the hotel lobby. AZ took his time, old joints creaking as he stood. He didnāt mind the cane, so much, but he could do without the pain that came with being three meters tall. By the time he was through the door to the lobby, Floette was back at his side, flitting around and trilling agitatedly. What had gotten her so riled up?
He felt the gentlest tug on his pants leg. He glanced down. It was your Absol, yanking on the fabric between its teeth. The Pokemon looked a bit worse for wear, but nowhere near as poorly as it had when you saved it from rogue mega evolving. It seemed agitated, too. What was going on?
Absol tugged just a bit harder, and AZ took a step forward. Satisfied that he was moving, it released the fabric and trotted towards the door. Did it want him to follow it? Floette floated forward, waiting near the door. Well, if two Pokemon wanted him to follow them, who was he to say no? It wasnāt like anyone would check into the hotel while he was out.
The sun was just beginning to rise when he stepped out onto the street. The Absolās claws clicked against the stones as it led him down alley after alley. It stopped at every street corner, looking back and waiting for him to catch up.
When he rounds the last corner, he pauses.
āHeeey, old man,ā you greeted him as he came into view. Your Absol rushed to your side, sniffing at your face in a way that reminded AZ of a mother. You were curled against the wall of the alley, pressing your hand to your side. Thereās red seeping through your shirt. With your free hand, you stroke Absolās fur. āSorry, he ran off the second I sat down. Didnāt think heād run all the way back to Hotel Z.ā
Absol huffs, as if to say āObviously I went and got help.ā
āYouāre injured,ā AZās eyes are locked on you, on the patch of red pressed under your hand. His voice is gentle, grandfatherly, but thereās an edge to it. āCan you walk?ā
āYeah, yeah yeah,ā you wince as you stand, pain clawing across the entire right side of your chest. The shock of the injury had definitely worn off by now. You lean against the wall as you get up, trying to support your weight without putting too much strain on the massive slash on your side. Absol wedges himself against your legs, preventing you from falling over.
āHow did this happen?ā AZ asks, offering you a hand. You take it, keeping one hand pressed against your side.
āOh, it was someone in the royale,ā you wince as you take a step, leaning on AZ for support. āI, uh, wasnāt looking where I was going and walked right into an attack.ā
āPerhaps you should take a break from the royale for a short while, then,ā he suggests, shifting his grip on his cane. Supporting his own weight was hard enough, but with you leaning on him, he was worried heād topple over.
āI thought you needed me to become the strongest mega user,ā you mutter. AZ inhales sharply at your comment, but you barely notice. Most of your focus was going towards putting one foot in front of the other. How many blocks away from the hotel were you? Three? Five?
āIām sure Floette will manage if you take a few moments to rest,ā he says after a few blocks of crushing silence. Floette trills, doing a small flip in the air next to him. You wished you could tell what she was saying, but she at least didnāt seem to be disagreeing with AZ.
āWhat about all the Pokemon, then? What will happen to them?ā you glance down at your Absol, thinking back at how much pain it had been in when it rogue mega evolved. The power coursing through the city had to be stopped somehow. Otherwise, Pokemon would keep getting hurt. People would keep fearing Pokemon.Ā
āYouāll be able to better assist them if you first care for yourself,ā AZ releases your hand, opening the door to the hotel and guiding you inside. You hadnāt realized how far you had walked. You canāt even remember most of the walk. That was bad, right? A sign of concussion or brain damage or something? Maybe it was just how tired you were.
āWhat about Taunie and Urbain, though? Whoās going to keep the Rust Syndicate off them?ā you collapse into one of the chairs in the lobby, Absol curling up on the floor below you, as AZ rummages for something under the counter. It was almost comical, seeing him try to bend over so far with limbs longer than you were tall. Your eyes threaten to close, but you resist. Canāt go falling asleep in the lobby, after all. It briefly occurs to you that youāre probably getting blood on the chair, but you canāt seem to find it in you to get up. Youāll clean the chair later, you decide.
āIām sure they will manage just fine without you for a few days,ā AZ stands back up, walking back over to where youāre sitting. In his hands is a small first aid box.
āA few days!?ā you cry, wincing at the way your whole side throbs when you yell. AZ sits on the chair next to you, setting his cane to the side as he opens the first aid kit and begins picking through it carefully.
āYes, a few days rest would do wonders for your health,ā he nods, āIt would give you a chance to catch up on sleep, in any case.ā
āI donāt need to catch up on sleep,ā you cross your arms. āIāve been sleeping just fine, thank you very much.ā
āYou donāt come back until almost dawn most days,ā AZ frowns. Heās not mad. No, itās worse: heās disappointed. Since when was he so concerned with how much sleep you got!? He ignores your look of confusion, instead producing a roll of bandages from the kit. āIāll need you to lift your shirt so I can tend to your wound.ā
You huff, peeling the wet fabric away from your side. Looking at it now, itās maybe, quite possibly, a very, very bad injury. The cut was clean, just below your bottom ribs, but it was deep, and blood had smeared down to the belt of your pants. Great, youād never get the stain out.
AZās arms are long enough that he can remain sitting as he cleans the cut with something that stings.
āArceus damn it!ā you hiss as the feeling of cold, tingling needles spreads from the disinfectant.
āLanguage,ā AZ scolds.
āSince when were you such a mother hen?ā You roll your eyes, lifting your arm slightly so he can better apply the bandages. You canāt remember the last time someone seemed so concerned about your well-being. It was weird.
Floette squeaks angrily.
āIt seems Floette shares the sentiment. There,ā AZ smiles and finishes tying the bandages. You lower your arm, your shirt falling back into place. āNow, you go change into some clean clothes and get some rest. Iāll have Taunie and Urbain run up in a few hours with breakfast.ā
āI really shouldnāt,ā you say nervously. Some of your resistance is still from your desire to do anything but rest, but most of it is genuine fear at what āfoodā the two would make. AZ laughs softly at the look of terror on your face.
āDonāt worry, Iāll keep them away from the kitchen,ā he smiles. Then, more sternly: ānow, upstairs.ā
āOkay, grandpa,ā you roll your eyes again and stand up slowly. You mean it as a joke, a dig at how old he is and how weird heās being, but it doesnāt quite land. You wouldnāt mind AZ actually being your grandpa. From the way he smiles, he might not mind either.
ā¢ Unlike Corbeau heās much stricter, but it comes from a well meaning place
ā¢ He canāt be swayed on bedtime or ājust one more snackā his word is law and you know it as well as the grunts of the syndicate
ā¢ This doesnāt make him mean though, just annoyingly stubborn
ā¢ If you do good on your āhomeworkā [odd jobs or papers he assigns you as he sees fit] he pays you a small allowance, then at the end of the week takes you shopping
ā¢ Someone in a store said something offhandedly about your clearly little behavior once, his glare was enough to shut it down fast
ā¢ Heās very hands on about lessons, taking great pride in teaching you how to care for the needs of different kinds of pokemon
ā¢ Youāll often find yourself helping to sharpen his skarmoryās wings or pick the dirt out from between steelixās segments
ā¢ He helps you with your own pokemon too of course
ā¢ If youāre feeling particularly small heāll just carry you around on his shoulders or his hip while conducting business as usual, only ever taking breaks to make sure youāre eating and napping on schedule

Caregiver Corbeau Headcanons
ą¹ Corbeau is a dad caregiver (as requested ofc)
ą¹ He refers to himself as daddy or dad depending on what you feel more comfortable calling him.
ą¹ He is quite strict, but this is out of fatherly cg love. If anyone upsets or hurts you, Corbeau will not hesitate to tell them off
ą¹ When Corbeau isnāt sure how to handle a problem or is stressed, he will ask Philippe for advice (or in my headcanon, Vinnie since he has a daughter)
ą¹ Corbeau is prepared for any situation and carries a bag with your little gear in it just in case, like extra pacifiers, small snacks, etc.
ą¹ Corbeau is wealthy and will spoil you, but not rotten; he expects you to at least have manners towards his grunts and other civillians
ą¹ He has an organizer with the finest art supplies for you to draw with in his office during long work days
ą¹ Corbeau will send his grunts out on a manhunt if any one were to judge you for your regression and will give them harsh punishment, he does not play around when it comes to you.
ą¹ Corbeau isnāt a big PDA fan and keeps his usual strict demeanor in public and will at most hold your hand or give you pecks on the hand, but in private, he is all lovey dovey and will give you butterfly kisses and let you sit in his lap as he works
ą¹ He could be chewing out Urbain and the rest of MZ about his debt one minute then the second you walk in, he softens up and doesnāt yell or raise his voice
ą¹ Corbeau will always make sure you eat well, I feel like he could makes some mean blueberry scones and tea time treats. For littles who have issues related to food, he will reward you for improvement and eating since he knows itās hard for you. Corbeau, despite having quite a bit of money, only takes you out to eat once or twice a week.
