Feminism philosophy blog 2 (Political Economy)
A systematic social apparatus...
These words in the beginning of The Traffic of Women: Notes on the "Political Economy" of Sex by Gale Rubin adequately sum up the themes of oppression present in both this text and The Girl: Mergers of Feminism and Finance in Neoliberalism times....
There has been a social apparatus that has possibly been indoctrinated in man since the beginning of time that has lead to recurring instances of oppression. These two articles explore the oppression of women in the present and the formation of gender identities in connection to the marxist ideology of dialectical materialism.
In the Traffic of Women, Rubin argues that this marxist ideology does not fully express or conceptualize sexual oppression. Women are viewed as a commodity (through kinship), but an in depth analysis of capitalism does not explain why women are given more domestic roles. The idea of capitalism is inherent in patriarchy but has lead to the exclusion of women from these roles which have been gendered and racialized. The Girl: Mergers of Feminism and Finance in Neoliberalism times further explores women being viewed as capital/ commodity and how the new neoliberal feminist might be playing into the hand of those oppressing them
Both of these articles attempt to alleviate the pains of social and gender stratification by looking at materialism through a feminist lens. Rubin aids in the quest of equality through providing awareness to where this ideology of marxism failed in analyzing the transaction of women as a commodity and gift to man (Levi-Strauss). The Girl article brings more awareness of the women being viewed as human capital. These two articles do not address the upheaval of the structures, which is what I look to hearing the most, nor do they address the creation of these structures in depth .
Awareness of these structures is the beginning of the healing of those who are oppressed and I feel that both articles do that well. My question is how do we transcend these structures and create an environment that is just to all. Furthermore, I feel that in the present women and men are both viewed as commodities for something higher up which is why division is prevalent in society. These divisions have created a lack of harmony which they capitalize off of in the name of capitalism. This hold trues to dialectical materialism, which suggests that material is the driving force behind the world. I feel that the collective idea of materialism has lead to the societal constructs created to keep this drive alive. An upheaval of these structures in place will come from a new paradigm of thought.
