There are advantages and disadvantages of using mobile device in the classroom. Some advantages include audio recording, Chat And Online Discussion Forums, and Live Polling Tools. Students often require personal and quality feedback on the work they turn in. Lecturers can use these tools (many of which are free) to determine what students already know and what should be concentrated upon. Lecturers can exploit the group chat features of mobile devices to create an online discussion forum to encourage class participation on content topics, even outside the classroom.

There are also disadvantages of having mobile devices in the classroom, such as, inappropriate materials, distraction from schoolwork , and child predators and cyber bullying. While schools can limit the availability of websites that can be viewed on their network, students may find links that slipped through the system. With the temptation of social media and texting in their hands, students may focus solely on their social life instead of the lesson plan. Child predators are a problem everywhere. Using digital devices at school creates just that much more exposure and potential danger for students. In addition, cyber bullying is also an increasing issue. Permitting use of digital devices in the classroom could potentially lead to more of it.

Lets talk technology

JeopardyLabs allows you to create a customized jeopardy template without PowerPoint. The games you make can be played online from anywhere in the world. Building your own jeopardy template is a piece of cake. Just edit your game and it is up and running. What I liked most is that you did not have to register for JeopardyLabs. This is a fun way to get the class involved.

Quizlet is a tool that I have been using since I’ve been in education. You can create test, use it for learning the material, and as an activity for review for the class. Once you create a study set, you can use it for multiple purposes. Anyone can use Quizlet to study and learn content created by other users, or to create their own custom study sets. You can also share sets with friends, classmates or your students.

Teaching with tools

The first technology tool that I would like to discuss is the smart notebook. SMART Notebook software offers more creative power and flexibility than ever before, with many new tools and features to help you create and deliver lessons more easily, more quickly and with greater impact. SMART Notebook also gives you the flexibility to create more extraordinary learning moments in your classroom. The smart notebook app eliminates the interaction of one student. Now with the app students can work from their tablets while the other student is working at the board.

As I prepared to do my presentation I researched Show Me online interactive app also. Show Me is a global learning community, a place where anyone can learn or teach anything. The Show Me iPad app lets you create lessons using a whiteboard. The app is free and there is no limit what you can teach! The down fall of this app is that if your class is not equipped with an iPad it will not work with the lesson.

Tools, Tools, and Tools

I’m back with more technology tools you can use in your classroom. A tool that we learned about this week was Thinglink. ThingLink Inc. is a Finnish-American provider of in-image interaction tools. ThingLink, launched in 2010 and led by Ulla Engeström and Janne Jalkanen, develops tools for image interaction that allow content sharing via online images. It’s like an image inside an image. You can even upload videos to make the picture more interactive. I would use this tool mostly for my social studies class. The only this is that we would have to do it whole class on the smart board because our school does not tablets.

Another tool I choose to discuss is iAnnotate. With iAnnotate is works on all devices. Some of its’ features include: annotating, reviewing, and sharing. You can clarify your work by elaborating on your annotations with pop-up comments.This is a good tool to have for reading, especially students who struggle with recall from a text. Technology tools are something great to use but when you do not have the resources it makes it difficult to use.

Hi Guys

This week in #ETEC 5610 I really enjoyed learning about a new tool to use in the classroom. We learned about using virtual field trips. By creating a virtual field trips the students can explore different sites (passage, videos, etc..) to answer questions about the topic. This was a good idea to use for differentiated instructions. I would set up a virtual field trip to use in my Social Studies class for my 4th and 5th graders. I think they would enjoy it. This could be setup for an individual assignment or group work. Cool math is another tool that could be used for math. It has games available for all levels of math. After students finish their given assignments they can practice more with cool math. This is our brain-training site, for everyone, where logic & thinking meet fun & games. These games have no violence, no empty action, just a lot of challenges that will make you forget you're getting a mental workout!

Khan academy is a non-profit organization created as an online education tool to help educate students. Khan academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard. I have used this tool for math and it gives the students a better understanding of the topic at hand. Knan academy can even be downloaded on a mobile app, this make the tool very versatile. PowerSchool is another awesome tool. We use this tool in the district I work in. It has features that can be used by administrators at district and school level. PowerSchool has portals for teachers, parents, and students. PowerSchool empowers teachers and drive students growth through innovative digital classroom capabilities and engage through real-time. Digital Technology

Once again thanks for following my blog on using technology in the classroom. This blog is for my #ETEC5610 course. I’ve learned a lot from this course, especially about using technology in the class. As we all know, technology occupies an important place within students' lives. Today I’ll be discussing two technology tools that could help you and I in the classroom.

One tool is Prezi. Prezi can be used for presentations. By using Prezi, you can use slides to get through your lesson for the class. Prezi is a visual learning tool which allows you to create maps of texts, images, videos, graphics, etc… and present them in a nonlinear way. Prezi is a PowerPoint presenter but in a more creative style. Prezi is a great tool for interactive classroom sessions or group projects. Students can cooperate in real time with up to ten others, in the classroom or at home, to brainstorm and build a presentation on one shared virtual whiteboard.

The other tool is teacher tube. I’m just learning about this tool but it seems like it can help keep students engaged during class. This tool give you the opportunity to present the material in more than one form. Sometimes we don’t present material where everyone understand, with teacher tube, the student is able to get the material from another teacher who may present different.

Technology in the classroom

If you are able to have a smart board in your classroom consider yourself lucky!!! With the advancement of technology and new standards it is hard to teach without a smart board. Smart boards help turn a boring lesson into excitement. This excitement have the students more engaged. An advantage of having a smart board is students being interactive. The most important advantage I think is student engagement. On the other hand a disadvantage of using the smart board is technical problems. If you have your lesson planned out and get to school and the smart board is not working, it can cause a BIG damper in the lesson.

Another great tool is video streaming, yes video streaming. Even though my school is not highly accommodated with technology, I like to enrich my lessons with videos. Normally I use YouTube. You can basically find any video for any lesson on YouTube. The disadvantage is teachers getting caught up in letting the video do the teaching.

Teaching with Technology!!!

Hey Y’all!!!!!!

I’m back with more information on technology and teaching. This week we learned about Universal Design for Learning (UDL). UDL is an opportunity for all to learn equally. UDL calls for multiply means of representation, action and expression, and engagement.

Lets talk about CAST, a nonprofit organization that focus on expanding learning through UDL. CAST has multiply technology tools to help enhance any subject. One tool that I looked into was the ISolveIt Puzzles, which provide an engaging way for students to develop the logical thinking and reasoning skills that are essential in mathematics. The challenge I have at my school is the availability of computers, we would have to use the tool as whole group.

Another tool is UDL Editions by CAST. UDL Editions take advantage of the flexibility of digital media to reach and engage all learners. Leveled supports and the Texthelp Toolbar balance challenge and support for each learner. At the school I’m at it’s very difficult to use technology because every classroom does not have student computers, so when incorporating technology it’s always a challenge.

This week in my ETEC class we exploring twitter and personal/professional learning network(PLN).

There are many reasons for teachers to use PLN. Just to list a few: share resources, find lesson plans, conferences, and inspiration from others. Your PLN can be used for personal or professional use. You can use your PLN to connect with tweeter on twitter to help bring diversity to your classroom. Twitter is another technology tool to incorporate in the classroom. It could be used to communicate with other schools in the district, connect globally, or obtain information to help with lessons. One instructional strategy I notice twitter used for was digital writing. Example, have students respond to the question of discussion through twitter. The challenge of incorporating twitter is the students getting distracted and tweeting off topic. Also, the school availability to technology.
