In the late summer of 1899, Leo Warren, banker and owner of the gentleman’s club the Golden Cat, set out into a new venture, something he honestly believed would rake in better cash than he was scamming off of the wealthy nobs in his club- he bought Medda Larkson out on the carnival venture she’d been trying to set up for a little while, but had never been able to properly finance. After her involvement in the newsboys strike, the few inventors she had fled, and Leo’s offer was her only option, and with the flourish of her name on paper, Leo had bought himself a circus, taking the best of Irving Hall’s performers, and the ones she had picked up for the carnival, with him.
The Great Lakes circuit was not a necessarily easy place to break into, but Leo had the money to throw at it, and the Larkson Traveling Carnival prided itself on being more daring, more extreme, more risque than any other circus out there. His no-holds-barred approach brought legal trouble from time to time in terms of pure indecency, but Leo smiled and waved, and let the “stuffy peasants” as he called them complain. His show was a solid money-maker.
Run by his manager, a woman he had tapped early on at the Cat, Rayna Gildstein kept the production moving and running with viciousness and occasional outright cruelty, at odds with her boss’s almost toxic charm that could convince almost anyone of anything he wanted them to believe in, until he turned and showed his true colors- worse than Rayna’s. The staff early on learned to avoid and keep their heads down around the pair, turning to others for leadership more often than not. A pair of sibling snake charmers, dancers, a tattooed girl, a strong-man were among the early members, but as Leo always says, there’s always room for another act, and there’s always room to replace one with something better.
