R the Lead Crayons going 2 b the most relevant indie rock band of 2k13? Will #postpunk #electronica #antifolk b lamestream by summer? Is VHB an indie qt 2 die for? These are the questions that plague my mind at nite.

Vast Nothingness was so buzzy that I sometimes wonder how long they will stay fresh b4 focus changes to some other band who tries 2hard. Truthfully, VHB knows what he is doing and has been producing some of the best music since 2k9.

Remember “Refraction”? or that 1 dog song?

LEAD CRAYONS AQUARIUM DRUNKARD ARTICLE

Lead Crayons are an up-and-coming Canadian band. Their style is a unique blend of eclectic sounds and new age ideas that can only be described as post-punk electronica anti-folk.

Lead Crayons was formed as the result of an acid trip that Victor Hugo Boss has described as “the most important experience of [his] life.” He pursued his drugged up fantasy in the form of Lead Crayons with his then-roommate Phil Quakely in 2009.

Once Boss and Quakely realized Lead Crayons was more than a two man project, they sought after new members.

            “I first saw Emma sitting in Laïka enjoying an espresso and I thought to myself, I have to have her,” recalls Boss. Emma Rodham accepted his offer to join the Lead Crayons as their resident keyboard and synth player. Her classical piano and cello training from her youth proved helpful to the project, as she appears on cello in songs like “Esoteric Sunrise.”

            The trio met Shiloh Marx and Tina Leroy, drums and bass respectively, through mutual friends. Lead Crayons was complete.

            Boss immediately began writing music that he felt did his visions justice. Their first gig was at Laïka, the very Montreal-based lounge where Boss and Rodham had met. Since then the Crayons have developed a cult following and they intend to keep it that way. If you haven’t heard of Lead Crayons before, well, you probably won’t. By keeping their music only at their shows Boss says he feels it will keep the music where it needs to be – with those who can really understand and appreciate its genius.

            The band toured the U.S. in 2011 with their first album, Vast Nothingness, and sold 1100 albums to the select few American individuals who attended their shows. Boss believes the fans will stay true to the Crayons and refrain from posting their music on the Internet, “Our fans are the type of people who can appreciate art the way it’s meant to be appreciated. Our shows are very intimate, and as a result of that we share a sort of bond, or an understanding. Keep it on the DL, you know, that’s what [Lead Crayons] are about.” words / e unruh
