Sanne Wevers has responded to all the accusations that have come out recently. First of all, shame on this reporter for fishing for negative comments while she’s barely holding on.  In case you’ve missed this, former Dutch gymnast Joy Goedkoop has accused Vincent Wevers of physical and psychological abuse. Sanne says she doesn’t recall physical abuse. She refused to specify more about Vincent, saying he will come with his own statement. This she has to repeat several times, because they reporter keeps on pushing these buttons.

Sanne obviously takes this very seriously, she mentions how it breaks her heart that in all accusations the KNGU gymnastics federation has been notified, but has not done anything with it. She encourages gymnasts to speak up, because the sport is too beautiful to be overshadowed by abuse. She considers there to be a big difference between Dutch gymnastics in the early 2000s and now, describing the former to be ‘Spartan’. They’ve been working hard for the past ten years to improve the training climate, and while there’s still room for improvement, it’s not like the early 2000s, which she has also experienced.

To be clear, since I’ve seen people wondering whether she’d defend Vincent Nastia-style, never does she say Joy is lying, just that she has not experienced physical abuse. She refuses to respond as merely ‘daughter of’(as the reporter seems to want), as opposed to one of the gymnasts. 

Other statements I’ve seen on Instagram from former gymnasts also specify that they experienced psychological abuse, not physical abuse. She emphasises that all stories need to be heard and dialogues need to be had so that lessons can be learned and the training environment can be improved. 

Edit: Wyomi Masela has also come out with her experience with Vincent Wevers. She denies any physical abuse, but says there were aspects of his coaching that were psychologically tough, like focus on her weight.

Is it possible to initiate the twist on the second flip of a tucked full-in? I don’t think I have ever seen it done before? I have seen girls initiate the twist on the second flip of a Chuso but not tucked.

Yes and it’s been done before. Oksana Chusovitina uses the full out technique, as did Carly Patterson. They are definitely harder to do because you can’t really pull for fear life on the second flip, meaning you have to get more height, and you’re pretty much in an open tuck throughout the entire skill.

From personal experience, I used to play around with full ins into the pit off of tramp, and when I wanted to try double doubles (never worked up the courage to) I was trying to do double full in’s because the idea of not being able to grab my legs/having to twist in the second flip of a skill was fucking with my head.

This is days after coach Gerrit Beltman came out admitting he was both physically and psychologically abusive to his gymnasts. He no longer coaches the Dutch team, but now coaches in Singapore after a few years in Canada. Beltman was Renske Endel’s (2001 world UB silver medalist behind Svetlana Khorkina)

Verona van de Leur’s coach during her most successful years (early 2000s) has also been accused of abuse, which I think he kind of admitted to? But he’s still active within the Dutch team, because he’s totally a different person now obviously. The coach, Frank Louter, also coached Susanne Harmes and Laura van Leeuwen during this time, but I think they switched gyms after the 2004 Olympics (as did Van De Leur for that matter).

Reminds me of when Verona van de Leur was training again a few years ago and completely ruled out ever competing for the Netherlands again, because she gets messaged by concerned parents all the time saying coaching practices still cross the line of being abusive. 

Also, the article mentions they tried to reach out to Vincent Wevers, but he said he’ll come out with a response himself shortly.

Wow a Romanian jr in 2003 had a 5.3 UB in the 2017-20 COP (5.8 in 2013-16)

And she was never even an Athens hopeful! She was born in 1988, like Andreea Munteanu and Dana Sofronie who were considered hopefuls and ended up going to the Anaheim worlds in 2003 (Sofronie as alternate). Corina Bucurean along with Eleonora Dragnea and Lorena Stancu made up this EYOF team instead and then just kinda vanished. Stancu competed at the Japan International Junior but that was about it, I remember she had a really nice floor routine that I can’t seem to find on YouTube. 

It’s a damn shame! I wish she was in Athens over Stroescu who was pretty pointless and likely made it based on lack of depth and her 2001 results. I’d never even heard of Corina until she randomly popped into my recommended.

Lorena Stancu apparently got silver at 2004 Romanian Nationals on floor behind Munteanu but it’s not on YouTube:(

Another name that comes to mind is Madalina Rapeanu, who I believe was born in 1987 (like Rosu, Eremia, Leonida). She had this really cool floor routine in 2003 to the Scorpions’ ‘Rock you like a hurricane’ and she too just vanished into oblivion.

On wayback machine it says Monica Rosu did a DLO at 2003 Romanian Internationals but the camera wasn’t on her until her 2nd pass so I’ve never seen it/am not sure if the person is mistaken. Do you remember her doing one?

In my memory she always had the cookie cutter passes like: full in, triple twist, 2.5, double pike like literally everybody from that quad apart from Oana Ban (And Stroescu/Cojocar in 2001). But I wouldn’t be surprised if she trained one though. Maybe with the rise of Ponor they had her focus more on her VT upgrades, and keep her FX at a decent standard for a team contribution. 

I also just remembered she went OOB on her end pose at Europeans in 2004 lol

Back in the day there was some shaky home video of it, but I don’t think there’s an official TV recording of it. The order of the TF was decided based on the results of the previous Europeans. However, Romania didn’t send a team to the 2002 Euros (only Petrovschi) so they competed in the first rotation. Pretty sure Rosu also did floor in qualifying at the Olympics? Or am I just making shit up now. I remember being pissed about them dismissing Eremia’s potential as an AAer

And they still won despite competing first lmao. I remember reading that they were getting anxious because they had to wait all day to see the results.

Romania’s qualification strategy at the Olympics was SO dumb. They had their two AAers easily qualify for finals in 2nd and 3rd, but they had the other four members do 3 events each, so that they couldn’t possibly have a reserve for AA finals. Their quals were like this

Sofronie: AA

Ban: AA

Ponor: VT, BB, FX

Rosu: VT, UB, FX

Eremia: UB, BB, FX

Stroescu: VT, UB, BB

Imo they should have done this

Sofronie: AA

Ban: AA

Eremia: AA

Stroescu: AA - she actually had a really nice floor routine in 2004.

Ponor: BB, FX - still vaults in TF though

Rosu: VT, UB

Yeah I don’t get why they were so set on Eremia being a specialist, because she always performed very well in the AA on a national level. Sofronie wasn’t that much better, except obviously on UB and she had a DTY. But Eremia did that god awful full on Yurchenko vault that everyone and their mum did during that quad, so in terms of SV that was only a 0.1 difference (9.8 vs 9.7). She was also way superior on beam, of course. Maybe Bellu preferred Sofronie’s work ethic over Eremia’s, because that sounds like a typical Bellu way to differentiate between gymnasts.

I’m so impressed with how Stroescu fought her way back onto the team in an era where gymnasts just evaporated from Deva. 

I’ll never not be salty about Oana Ban getting injured in Athens. I would have loved for her to get onto the podium, both AA and floor.

lol remember 2003 worlds when if North Korea coulda kept their shit together on beam and floor they could have contended for a team medal. I don’t know why but the idea of north korea medaling in a team finals has me dying of laughter😂

I have not forgotten this at all! She also deserves huge props for how well she did in the 2011 floor final on less than 40 minutes notice after not training for a whole week. I also adore her 2012 Olympic routine, she did an incredible full in + back tuck and whip + triple, and I love that she did a free hip 1.5 + Jaeger in 2010.

Her great tumbling aside, she was someone who had real musicality. She executed both tumbling and choreography with so much energy and zest, there was just such a lovely quality to her performances. I feel like she had everything that I am missing from floor nowadays.

I’ve always been a bit salty that they never gave her more challenging music and choreo to work with as opposed to these very traditional Romanian routines that could’ve been given to anyone on the squad, because she could obviously have pulled it off and developed a style of her own.

Forminte needed to be gone YESTERDAY. He managed to get at least 3 gymnasts injured in 3 weeks before worlds (Alexandra Mihai - back, Iulia Berar - ACL, Ana Maria Puiu - Leg). He also only decided to have Crisan her ankle surgery this year when she’s been in pain ever since having to pull out of 2017 Swiss Cup. Denisa Golgota has also had knee issues under his coaching and she injured her ribs training in stuttgart on Vault which would explain her awful performance, Antonia Duta has a knee injury, and I don’t know if Maria Pana (their “alternate” this year) was injured too, because you’d think she would have been subbed in for Puiu, but I think it’s totally plausible that Nicolae decided to let the 4 girls do AA and all have a fair shot at Tokyo as he must have known they had no shot at team qualification.

The injury issues also go way back. He had Anamaria Tamarjan competing on a cracked femur in Beijing, Steliana Nistor had hand, back and knee problems, either Alina Stanculescu or Aluissa Lacusteanu gained weight after getting cortisone shots, and in a 2008 documentary it shows him telling her she either has to run on the treadmill all morning training or all afternoon and only eat salad. There are also numerous physical abuse claims against him which go way back.
