Reflecting...

I’ve been working on learning Pokemon for a couple of weeks now and I definitely know more than I expected to. It’s been really helpful to play the games, watch the cartoon, and do some of my own research as well as supplement my own journey with that of my friend. I purposely started with the first game to simulate the literacy journeys that long-time Pokemon fans went through, but I now wonder if starting with a more recent game would have been better. I’ve heard that the newer games are a bit easier, but I think these games also rely more on your previous knowledge of Pokemon gameplay mechanics and tropes. So, I think it would have just been a different experience.

I definitely wish I’d started playing Pokemon at a younger age, but obviously it’s too late for that! I’ve learned a lot so far and I plan to continue learning because I know there’s a lot I haven’t even touched on yet. Thanks for journeying along with me this far!

Trainer Tips:

For all the trainers playing Pokemon Gen1 for the first time!

Special Atk. and Special Def. are bundled up into a single stat, so keep that in mind when deciding what Pokemon to use!

There’s no breeding in these games, but there’s also no Effort Values, Natures, IVs, Abilities, or even gendered pokemon. So it’s not a big deal.

Critical hits and One Hit-KO moves are based on a pokemon’s speed here! The faster the user the more likely they are to land!

Psychic Types are broken as heck, Ghost moves are ineffective here, so get yourself a Starmie, Jynx, Hypno, or Alakazam (especially the latter two since they’re pure-psychic) if you’re having trouble!

FOCUS ENERGY AND DIRE HIT DON’T WORK, they’re bugged and decrease your Crit. ratio instead of boosting it so avoid these moves like the plague!

You can trick an NPC’s pokemon with non-damaging psychic moves (agility, amnesia) to spam their moves if you use a poison type!

If you chose Charmander and are having a tough time against Brock, take advantage of his Onix’s Bide to decrease its stats (Sand-attack, Growl, Leer/Tail-whip). It unleashes nothing because you didn’t damage it and you can now chip away at it when it tries to use Screech or Tackle and spam the non-damaging moves when it’s using Bide.

If you’re experienced in Gen1, feel free to add stuff to this list to give a little hand to the new kids haha (or let them suffer, I guess… your choice XD)

The New Player’s Guide To Gen 1 Glitches: Or, Mews, Missingnos and Explosions, oh my!

The first generation of Pokemon might well be one of the most broken sets of games ever made. There are an absurd amount of holes in the code, and the game’s attempts to plug the holes just causes more problems. Of course, it’s possible to exploit this – and not just that, it’s possible to do it totally safely.

So naturally, Game Freak left the code as it was for the 3DS release. (Literally – the only thing that’s been changed is the Jynx sprite, as far as I know.) And that means that a new generation of nerds can break these lovely, lovely games for fun and profit!

There’s too many glitches to list here, so I’m just going to go for the big ones. These glitches are safe (with one exception, which I’ll explain when we get there), reasonably easy, and fairly well-known.

Vlog part 3 is up! This concludes my mini-series about my friend’s Pokemon literacy journey. I wanted to include her story as well as mine because learning literacy skills is different for each person, but there are clear parallels between her learning process and mine. We both noticed a lot of the same things and struggled with similar tasks. I think our experiences were so similar because we are the same age and starting at the same point with our literacy skills in regards to Pokemon.

Things to Know If You're Playing Pokemon Yellow for the 1st Time

(Most of these apply to Red and Blue, as well)

-Gotta talk to your Pikachu every once in a while. -DON’T. Lose. To. Eevee. Pikachu takes that very personally. -Your bag is tiny. Gone are the days where you could stuff every single thing you find in there. -ALWAYS remember how much space you got left in your PC box. Yes, you absolutely must switch them MANUALLY before you go out on a trip, otherwise you’ll get to the legendaries and miss out on catching them because the stupid box is full. Yes, this happened to me. -Pokemon capture - especially the rare ones - is hardest in Red, Blue and Yellow. I’m not kidding. Particularly the legendaries. Catching Pokemon in X and Y is effortless by comparison. -Got an ITEMFINDER? Congratulations. Unless your superior eyes can see things beneath the infrared wavelength, that device is useless. -The EXP share is about the most annoying item you will ever collect in this game. Why? I won’t spoil that one for you. -For a particular reason… the hardest gym leader you’ll come across is ironically the very first one - Brock. -Get enough Repels for when you visit the caves if you don’t want a nervous breakdown. Why? Zubat. How? You’ll see. -Yellow is the only Pokemon game where you canNOT evolve your Pikachu into a Raichu. The only way to do so, is to trade that Pikachu away. -If you lose any battle, you lose one half of your money. It’s a shark tank out there in RBY -GOOD LUCK FINDING THE GODDAMN ELEVATOR KEY.

Still Learning!

I have been working on researching the topics I posted in my last update, but it’s taking forever! I live-tweeted some of my research here.

I am also posting Part 1 of my video series! Two of my friends got together to film this for me. One of them has played Pokemon her whole life, and the other has never played or watched it before, so this video series will follow her through a few Pokemon-related activities to see how hard it is for her to figure out what’s going on. You can see that here!

I’m still finding it hard to piece together all the different aspects of the Pokemon universe, and learn all of the things that “Pokemon masters” know. I can tell this will be a long journey that will require a lot of effort from me! I think it would have been much easier to start learning it as a kid.

--Pokemon main games (color versions) --Extra games (Mystery Dungeon, Snap, Stadium, Colusseum, Pokepark, minigames) --Twitch Plays Pokemon (TPP) --Pokemon cartoon series --Pokemon movies --Pokemon cards --Pokemon merchandise line --All generations of the Pokemon themselves --Objections to Pokemon (like PETA) --Pokemon famous songs (Pokerap, theme song) --Pokemon board games --Serebii.net --Pokemon basics (evolutions, stones//levels, eevees specifically, weather/other contextual evolutions, levels, shinies, rare, prehistoric, types & the effectiveness scale, battling & commands, not being obeyed) --Pokemon competition universe  --Antagonist system (Team Rocket/etc) --Goal of Pokemon universe: CATCH EM ALL --Pokeballs & other mart items --Building types --Clone people/NPCs --Post-game stuff --Fan stories & mythology (ie lavender town, game remakes like the one where Pokemon dies if they faint) --Pokemon playthrough challenges (only use magikarp, etc.)

I watched the first episode and it was quite an experience. I learned a lot about Pokemon and how the cartoon transfers to the game. I still feel pretty confused about a lot of things that weren't really explained yet but that's how cartoons work so I can accept it. I'm still miffed about the game not giving me instructions! Ash sure knew a lot more than I did when he stepped out of his house the first time to go to Oak's lab. At least the rival makes sense now. 

 Pikachu was a cute character and pretty sassy, so I look forward to seeing how that's transferred into the game. I hope Pikachu stays outside the Pokeball like it did in the cartoon. I hope my mom packs me a backpack of clothes.

I hope the story stays pretty close to the cartoon. Based on the graphics and gameplay I've seen so far I'm not so sure about being chased by a pack of bird things and a Siri device talking to me (although the Siri thing would've been super helpful at the beginning of the game!) but maybe it'll happen. I hope the game is as exciting and dramatic as the cartoon.
