Kenya, Samburu warrior (moran) by Dietmar Temps
I am still researching into the Surma and Mursi tribes in Ethiopia, trying to look at the body painting and decoration that they do. Whilst not finding too much, there was a lot about the lip plates that are worn by the women of these tribes. I found out why it is done and how it is done and have written it all down so that it can go into my sketchbook. Women who have a lip plate are desirable for marriage, and those with the biggest lip plate are worth more in cattle which is given to the woman’s family by the man she is to marry. As more tourists are going there however, young girls can see more of the outside world and some refuse to do this ancient tradition. I think that this is good, but also sad in a way. Obviously from the eyes of someone in a developed country, I don’t see how lip plates can be appealing. However, I understand that the tribal people have a much different understanding to us and it means something completely different to them than to does to me. So I think it is sad because one of their long traditions is starting to fade, and even though the specific lip plate is kind of ugly, traditions have a beauty to them. they are passed down for years and years and years, and some how are not lost for an extremely long time.
