ONE OF THE BETTER, arguably fool-proof ways to truly test the mettle of a relationship was, she’d learned quickly, to stick both participants on an elevated dirt mound and wait for disaster to calibrate. in another context, perhaps, if catherine had decided to take someone else up on the hike, they wouldn’t be here. she was getting real good at panning out the what-could-have-been’s, now.
❝ come up with anything yet ? ❞ they’d spent the larger portion of the late afternoon ruminating on sodden turf, cracking their heads open over a map that looked suspiciously misinformed. the sun was beginning to set after a full day’s work, and they were still nowhere near relocating their designated trail. it wasn’t like aaron to give up so easily, though, so she’d made the compromise and helped herself be comfortable amid the withered foliage. for a moment, catherine entertained the idea of watering the bracken and trying to drown herself in it. if she’d been well-read, she would’ve come up with a poem or two about that imagery in the hours they’d spent cooped up there.
she rapped the back of his head with her knuckles, the movement lacking vehemence, and lowered her own onto his knapsack. ❝ wake me up when the meteor comes to destroy us, champ. ❞

even though the need for adventure ran through his veins, aaron’s upbringing had been quite the metropolitan one. st. clementine possessed a wide range of natural scenarios that he had yet to explore, and the mountains were one of them. last year, the hiking trip seemed to be easier than what they were tackling at the moment. after a long period of time of going around in circles, abandoned by wi-fi and civilization, they had come to a stop.
in his despair, a risible idea crossed his mind; level-headed aaron would have never thought of it. whether witch or saint, both titles absurd, maybe this was her punishment for his incredulity. non-believers were being shunned this time, not to mention his companion was not helping him concentrate on the disconcerting map. the forest had turned into a labyrinth. catherine’s harsh gesture made him snap out of his absorption.
“ i’m going to tie you to a tree and leave you to your own devices, until a wild animal finds you, “ he blurted out, refraining himself from crumpling the piece of paper serving as a map. he threw it to the ground and sat next to where she was lying. for aaron, the possibility of giving up did not exist, but a break was in order. “ hope it gets me first. ”
