You’ve heard his saxophone. You probably never knew his name.
If you’ve ever watched The Pink Panther, you’ve heard one of the most recognizable saxophone melodies ever recorded.
That unforgettable solo wasn’t played by Henry Mancini.
It was played by Plas Johnson.
A legendary Hollywood session musician, Johnson spent decades recording with artists like Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee. Millions of people heard his playing, even if they never knew who was behind the sound.
When it came time to record The Pink Panther Theme, Mancini already had Plas Johnson’s unmistakable tenor saxophone in mind. Johnson later recalled they only needed a couple of takes, and when they finished, the orchestra applauded.
Plas Johnson has passed away at the age of 94.
His name may not have become a household one.
But his sound became immortal.
Rest in peace, Plas Johnson. 🎷
