Marriage is a funny thing.
How does that quote go? “If you think ‘happily ever after’ starts once you get married, you couldn’t be more wrong”? I know that’s what they say, but the hopeless romantic in all of us never fully believes it. Even after marriage, and the realization sets in that the quote is an absolute fact, we still think to ourselves: “Other people’s marriages aren’t as fucked up as mine.”
It’s toxic that we grow up thinking that marriage is a beautiful thing. To put it bluntly, it’s really nothing but a long, grueling, relentless sea of fights and heartache, with a few waves of good moments that, hopefully, are nice enough that when you look back at your marriage, you find that the pain was worth it because of those moments. A terrifying concept, but true, none the less.
Marriage is a funny thing, because marriage is a joke.
