Illegal Newroz, HADEP Party Office, Elazig © Onnik James Krikorian 1997
In 1992, 109 civilians were killed by Turkish security forces during Newroz (Novruz) celebrations in Cizre and the holiday was considered “illegal” in Turkey until 1995.
Kurdish political parties such as HADEP, for example, were refused permission to hold their own Newroz celebrations and while Women’s Secretary Nesibe Yilmaz and others danced inside the party offices, police waited outside ready to arrest them afterwards. It wasn’t until 2005 that the situation noticeably improved at Newroz in Turkey. Many of those people we interviewed and photographed were arrested afterwards. Some were reportedly tortured and imprisoned. Onnik James Krikorian.
