"I'm your man" by Armando Fusco Via Flickr: I recently watched a BBC programme about Leonard Cohen in concert and I was reminded of some photos I took of him in 1979 in Dublin. It was a wonderful evening. "If you want a partner Take my hand Or if you want to strike me down in anger Here I stand I'm your man" For more background on this Cohen concert please visit the "1 Heck of a Guy" website via the url below: 1heckofaguy.com/2010/11/03/leonard-cohen-photo-flashback-...

Here's the first review of The Flame provided by Booklist. It's a starred review. June Sawyers writes: "His topics will be familiar to anyone who knows Cohen’s work: loneliness, faith, gratitude, the essential brokenness of the human spirit, and, of course, love—always love and its numerous manifestations... Poignant and brave, lit up with flashes of anger, this is a luminous collection and classic Cohen."

The final collection of the seminal musician and poet, which he was determined to complete before his death Just weeks before his death in late 2016, Leonard Cohen told The New Yorker that he was ready for the end to come. He just wanted enough time to put his last book in order. Fortunately, that time was granted. The Flame is Cohen’s eloquent farewell, a valedictory collection of lyrics, poems, notebook sketches, and self-portraits that maps his singular creative journey. As noted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s citation, “For six decades, Leonard Cohen revealed his soul to the world through poetry and song—his deep and timeless humanity touching our very core. ”In addition to new poems about war, desire, regrets, lamb chops, and hummingbirds, and lyrics from his last three albums, including the chart-topping “You Want It Darker,” The Flame includes carefully selected excerpts from Cohen’s voluminous notebooks, which he kept faithfully over the years. Readers will find in these pages the subjects that have always preoccupied Cohen: the dimensions of love, the secret code of existence, and the hope for transcendence in a broken world. In the words of Cohen’s longtime manager and friend, Robert Kory, The Flame “reveals to all the intensity of his inner fire” to the end. “There are very, very few people who occupy the ground that Leonard Cohen walks on.” —Bono Leonard Cohen was a hugely influential Canadian poet, songwriter, and cultural icon who died on the eve of the 2016 presidential election. His “Hallelujah” is widely considered the redemptive song of the resistance. Cohen’s many canonical songs (“Suzanne,” “So Long, Marianne,” “Famous Blue Raincoat,” “Dance Me to the End of Love,” and others) have earned him a place in the small pantheon that includes Bob Dylan and Patti Smith. Cohen’s many honors include a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, a Prince of Asturias Award for Literature, and election to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Photo of Leonard Cohen was probably taken at the Newport Folk Festival. Perhaps by David Gahr, 1967.

Javier Mas, who played twelve string guitar and the bandurria during Leonard Cohen's 2008 - 2013 tours, shared this video today honoring John Bilezikjian, Leonard's oud player during the 1980's. John recently passed away.
Leonard performs "Solidarity Forever." It is true that he did perform this song at the University of Wisconsin on October 30, 1970, based on the reports of audience members. However, I don't believe there is a recording of that performance. Here Leonard performs the song, I believe, at soundcheck for the December 8, 1979 Odeon show in Birmingham, England. When Leonard indicates that the chorus is "solidarity forever," I believe he is instructing his back up singers, the unmistakable voices of Jennifer Warnes and Sharon Robinson.
Many thanks to Clemens Alexis for uploading this song.
