Just wanted to say thank you for leaning into being a more positive RE confession blog. There are too many that aren’t and, like the recent anon mentioned, it’s hard to interact with the fandom from the creative side when there’s so much negativity being highlighted. Realistically, it’s much more balanced, and I feel like you do a great job of showing that here.

I’d like to put something positive out there. I think @key201303 has some really fun Resident Evil AUs. They’re building a sweet world with some OCs.

I wish more people would give recommendations instead of being rude in the confessional. I’d like to find more authors out there. I’ve only seen one other person recommending people.

Finally not a fanfic take lmao

But,I really want to like re 9(and I do for a good bunch of it's aspects) but I found really weird the choice of him having that one nurse(which is mentioned to have started working there recently,for all we know she didn't know jack about the shady business,which imo is most likely as she literally goes to tell him to leave rather than go away by herself) die(which was VERY preventable) and the rest of the game being about his survivor's guilt, the latter is obviously an established trait which is further expanded upon but seeing him watching someone die just like that feels weird when the rest of the game brings this trait of his as a core theme of the story compared to previous games, I don't mind having that one gory moment to show that things are for real but it feels bizarre to have leon just stand there and do nothing, I would have much preferred if he tried to save her but failed,which imo would have contributed to the whole theme and his insecurity about not being able to save anyone, I know this sounds like a huge nitpick over a random npc but I feel like it's worth considering given the rest of the game focuses on those themes.

Feels bad imo bc it feels like this choice was made without considering the implications it would have on the character imo.

The entire scene with the nurse in RE9 has been met with scrutiny. For those who don't know, people have been criticizing how the nurse died + how Leon reacted. This is due to Leon's reaction time, his guilt, his need to save people, and the narrative of the game not aligning with how she died and how Leon failed to save her.

We understand how this is jarring, as he doesn't express remorse at a possible innocent civilian being slain. Moreover, Requiem is supposed highlight Leon's trauma and guilt but this one scene undermines a lot of his character and the story.

It's refreshing to hear non-fanfic takes. Friendly reminder: we accept all confessions as long as they involve Leon!

There was a Leon x reader series on here that I'm having trouble finding 😢 so I'm asking it here to see if anyone is familiar with it

Basically it's Leon x reader. Reader is his rookie who is also selectively mute I guess? I remember it was a slow burn and they were headed into a mission to the Arctic before tumblr refreshed and I couldn't find it anymore 😫

It was one of the best written fics I've ever read and I'm devastated

I wish that there were more NSFW fics that had PROTECTED sex and use of condoms rather than unprotected and breeding kinks.

Don’t get me wrong, there are GOOD, REALLY GOOD fics with unprotected sex, but the saturation of breeding kinks scare me away from a fic a lot of times. It doesn’t really help that I was SA’d a few years ago, and because of that, I have to sift through a lot of fics because a lot of times, the breeding kink can be very triggering. I know that people shouldn’t cater to one person, which is also why I’m glad that reader tags exist, but with SO many fics having that kink, it turns me away from what I’m sure is a fantastic read.

A previous confession briefly touched on the topic of smut fanfics, including unrealistic portrayals of sex + kinks, which can spread some seriously dangerous misinformation.

Unprotected sex/breeding kinks can be uncomfortable. The breeding kink + dialogue is very common these days as well. We understand where you're coming from and hope you're doing better now.

The biggest red flag in a fic for me is when the writer pairs Requiem Leon with a female who is younger than her 30s. Tells me immediately that they do not give a shit about his character and are simply self inserting. Nothing wrong with that, it’s what fanfic is for, but I’d like to say thanks to those writers because it shows me straight away that very little in their work is actually going to show older Leon in character, since they can’t see past their own fantasies to write him in a pairing that actually fits him both logically and canonically. 9 times out of 10 they're just writing him because he's hot right now, few in this fandom actually care for Leon as a character.

We understand where you're coming from. There's not much in the games that hints at Leon intentionally going after a young partner or pushing the limit of what an appropriate age difference in a relationship is.

With the release of RE9, a lot of fans who are in their early 20s are using their own background (such as their age) to write a fanfic with Leon in his late 40s. It is likely a mix of inserting personal details about themselves and/or fantasies.

Sometimes the synopsis/prompt of a fanfic gives away that it will be OOC.

Like many, I was enamored with Leon when RE9 was released. I have never played an RE game in my life. I have no idea which fics portray him in character and which do not. Part of me doesn't care. I did eventually start the RE1 and RE2 remakes, but I'm not normally a horror genre kind of person.

My favorite fics are the sex pollen/virus that takes sex to cure ones. But it'll be a while before I know if Leon is in character in any of them.

This can be tricky since there are a lot of "Leons" in one franchise. There's Leon in the original games + movies, and each Leon varies so much.

As for the remakes, Capcom has made Leon far more consistent in those games. The cutscenes, dialogues, character interactions, game files, etc. are a great way to explore what defines Leon. Happy reading!

I really don’t get why a lot of fans are so adamant he smokes when he’s said himself he doesn’t smoke.

For some context to those who may have missed it: Leon declines the offer for a cigarette in the original Resident Evil 4.

The remakes undergo heavy changes yet they still kept in Leon refusing a cigarette.

He also makes this remark to Luis, when he asks for a cigarette.

Leon is shown to be drinking in the movies like Damnation and Vendetta, but not smoking.

The constant complaints about smut fics and Leon being OOC make me not want to write anymore. It makes me nervous thinking that if I don’t write him perfectly or I want to put a smut scene in my story that I’ll just be hated for it. I was originally really excited to post my ideas, but now it just feels shitty and nerve wracking. It just feels like it won’t be good enough. :(

You may have missed it but there were several confessions + comments indicating people don't mind OOC fics! You shouldn't let some people's fic preferences get in the way of wanting to write; there's a variety of Leon fanfics under the tags.

i am almost certain that kennedyafterdark uses ai to write her fics :/ i've used one of those ai detectors and they always say 100% written by gen ai which really sucks

There was already a confession and minor discussion on this writer regarding AI, FYI! We would like to advise against using most AI detectors, as they are often incorrect and train AI programs.

public service announcement: for anyone who was reading the following fics - 'controlled catalyste'....'the grey'....or 'regeneration protocol' on ao3. the author 'proclaimerofheroes' was found to be using gen ai to write all her stories and got exposed with a shitload of hard evidence. she was also plagiarizing published work probably because of the ai she used. that's why all the fics have been deleted from ao3 while her account remains. let that be a warning to anyone using it...you're gonna get found out sooner or later. so be honest/transparent about it so people can make informed choices in whether or not to support "your" work, or face a major exposure at some point.

Full disclaimer, we do look into AI allegations with concrete evidence via messages/sources and publish such confessions to keep the community informed. In this case, the writer was confirmed to be using AI and has since deleted their works on Ao3.

Once again, we would also like to reiterate that we are against AI and witch hunts but the reality here is that there have been multiple confirmed cases of fanfics created with the use of generative AI. AI works are allowed on Ao3 and should be tagged as such. It is up to readers to choose whether they want to engage or not.

As with another confession submitted, it can be uncomfortable to come across extreme works that are improperly tagged.

I've always wondered why people choose American reader as the default option, even when some writers themselves aren't American. I mean, I do get it to some extent since most fandoms take place in America, but wouldn't it be nice to have an immigrant, expatriate, or a visitor reader? Maybe it's my desire to read Y/n's that are inspired by characters like Enzo/Dimitri, but come on, I can’t be the only one thinking about it!?

This is likely due to the fact that Resident Evil focuses on American characters/cultures/settings. Another confession also wanted to see more diverse inserts + backgrounds in Leon fanfics.
