imo Dragon Slayers were never capable of defeating dragons. The only chance they had was when they eventually turned into dragons themselves like Acnologia. Suppressing the dragon seed turned Dragon Slayers into just regular mages with advanced techniques (like eating their element + using magic on their entire body)
