Final Book Analysis Summary

The two books that I picked to read and write about for my book analysis paper are The Facebook Effect and The Future of Reputation. I picked these two because they seemed like they would go well in a paper together. Facebook is all about putting out information about one’s self on the Internet, while The Future of Reputation deals more with the privacy or lack there of, of the internet.

TheFacebook Effect includes the details about the founders of Facebook, how Facebook got its start, and the process it has gone through to get to where it is now. In general, it goes into how Facebook was not just started as a game, the extremely talented Mark Zuckerberg, had more in mind. He then devoted all his time to the website with some other students when they all moved in together. This book was interesting to write about because we use Facebook everyday in our generation. Zuckerbergs story brought to light the extensive process that Mark had to go through in order to reach his success.

I also wanted to write about this story because it is truly and incredible story about a small start on a college campus to turning into a worldwide phenomenon. It somehow gives hope to college students who want to start their own company this same way. Although it is a rough road, it can be accomplished and that is very encouraging. Lately, the privacy settings on Facebook have been a controversal topic in which many have explored. This is why I then was led to read The Future of Reputation because it broke down those same laws that allow or prohibit certain information to be revealed.

The Future of Reputation this book was written by Daniel Solove, an authority on information privacy law. The story goes into the dark side of the Internet and how it is a difficult task to balance freedom and privacy. The internet has formed a place where we can act with a complete façade on, but also have no control over what gets put out about us at the same time. It has wound a dark web that us as consumers are trying to figure out a way around. Solove focuses on blogs, chat rooms, social networking sites, and what effect they have on free speech as well as personal opportunities.

My plan was to tie this book into how Facebook specifically was created as a positive thing, but over the years has shed light of negativity in a lot of ways. In my paper, I aimed to discuss the pros and cons of social networking, how things that were created originally as one thing now serve a different purpose, and how these sites have affected people both professionally and personally. Between the two books, The Facebook Effect shows the positive outcomes of social networking while The Future of Reputation shows the real, dark side as well as how realistically it may affect us negatively in the future. I tried to highlight the fact that privacy and internet use is not something to mess with. Both books shed light on social networking as a whole and how it has changed our world completely.

Overall, I enjoyed writing this assignment because it took topics that our current to us today, and dug a little bit deeper into the laws and stories that make our favorite websites functional.

I think that playing videos in class can be a positive in student learning, but like you said, if the videos are not aligning with the classroom content, it is busy work and leaves students uninterested. I am in a class right now where all the teacher does is play videos. Although they could be interesting,it is every single class period. It makes it very uninteresting and dull. Ah this is absolutely terrible and I can't believe that it is even allowed. I think that when you talked about how a company is now successful based on how many "likes" they have is totally true. Companies and technology have turned these young, nieve people into users of a product that they are not even aware of. When our country is already in so much debt, none of this makes any sense at all.

Students Suspended for Twitter Comments

Lately, social networking and privacy has been a very controversial topic in the media. The big question is, "How far is too far?" "Should businesses and schools have the right to check employee or student's social networking sites?" etc. Businesses and schools have started to ask for the right to check the social networking sites of their future employees, current employees, or student. People have brought up the opinion that this is impeaching on people's privacy, that this no longer divides up personal life with professional life etc. Others say that this is okay and that if you are going to put it on the internet it is free rage for anyone's viewing pleasure. Recently, some students from Gastonia, N.C., were suspended because of comments that they made on Twitter. Parents and students are in an uproar about this because they are throwing around the questions that I mentioned earlier trying to get multiple opinions. One parent said, "The administration is supposed to be for the kids. They are not supposed to be against the kids." I completely agree with her. At my high school they would expel students due to content they found on their facebooks by creeping around. As much as i don't think that people should be putting this stuff out of the internet if they don't want it to be found, I still think that this is going overboard. I think that these parents are right. The school should maybe stop looking into what students say and punishing them for it, instead, they need to look within the school and figure out what they need to work on as a faculty. This has been a problem for longer than we realize, but people seem to just now be catching on. Although the school denies searching for students, they obviously have been. I personally think that school, work, and personal life should all be separate unless someone is flaunting inappropriate information that could affect the business or school that they attend. In conclusion, people are in debate about this controversial topic and it will most likely end in more laws allowing or prohibiting these actions. Dating back, it all fundamentally has to do with freedom of speech. Jenifer Rudinger, Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina said, "Students should not be disciplined for what they express on their own time, especially if they are using their own computer or cell phone." I think for now, schools are just going to do what they can to protect their establishment while they can whether wrong or write.

Just a little less then a year ago the New York Times wrote an article about the new concept of a “social media background check”. According to the article this check runs a search on everything that the person in question has done with social media both good and bad. For example this means that when the run the background they might see that on Facebook the person is an avid supporter of animal rights groups and that they are a member of multiple charitable groups. However on the downside to this is that if the person they are researching has EVER in their life made a tweet or status about something racist or involving sex or drugs they will see that as well. Do you really want your future company knowing what you “accidentally” wrote on your Tumblr when you were out drinking Saturday night?

So the question I asked myself was is it our responsibility to know better or smarter social media etiquette or is social media our own personal/recreational activity that shouldn’t be a consideration when you apply for a job? But that is a question that does not seem to be simply answered. While I think that to some degree you should have the opportunity to express yourself especially with out having to make everything you write professional sounding I would suggest a fake username. A lot of my friends have done this with their Facebook or twitter accounts as they have entered the time of either college applications or job searches. Let your good friends know that you are doing this and the others will figure it out but at least if you have a name with no connection to you posting things that are a little more private the company can’t connect them to you personally. Another option is to create to seperate profiles and one can serve the purpose of professional friends and now background searches and the other with your nick name or something could be your private account.

However, the other suggestion which seems so obvious but is easier said then done is just done post, tweet, blog, or upload anything that could get you into trouble. Next time you upload a photograph to facebook ask yourself “would I want my grandma to see this?” or the next time you tweet when your angry think about if you would be embarrassed if your boss read it?

So those are my suggestions and questions posed about the situation of a social media background check but I have skirted a little around one of the bigger issues revolving around this article, is this right?? Should random people be allowed to look up everything I have ever done or said? Is this against our privacy? According to Max Drucker “We are not detectives, All we assemble is what is publicly available on the internet today”. The article also states that the federal trade commission has determined that companies can run these background searches claiming that they fall within the fair credit reporting act.

My one favor I ask of those who run these social media background checks is just to keep in mind what is relevant and what isn’t. What occurred when I was 16 and what I am now. What I said about something that would never ever affect the company as opposed to a red flag. But what do you guys think? Are companies in their right to search through our Facebooks and Twitters? How do you think people should prepare for these types of checks? Will this affect the amount of people who now choose to use social media?

I wholeheartedly agree with this post. I think that it is okay for businesses to use social media as a way to look into potential employees's character. The problem with that though is where do you draw the line. Like you said, companies need to understand that the choices we made and the posts we posted when we were 16, are not necessarily what we are now. By the time one is applying for a serious job, one is probably in their early twenties, therefore has had approximately six years to grow up. That information is not accurate.

Twitter has commonly had a higher age group of users until recently. In an article written by Stephanie Schwab, Rise of the Twitter Teenager, she shows us that there is a new age group among the Twittersphere. Teens. The young kids are turning to Twitter at an even earlier age to follow... I think this is a really interesting post. You made some really good points. In addition to what you said, I feel like celebrities might have a lot to do with teens being highly involved with Twitter. More celebrities their age such as Justin Bieber, the younger Kardashians, OneDirection, etc all have Twitter. I feel like this is their way of feeling older and more connected.

Social Media and Petitions

Social Media can be used for several purposes, one of which is for a good cause. Laterly, there has been dispute over meat distributers and what these companies are doing to our meat. Through Youtube videos, online petitions and social networking, a group of people took a stand and started revolting. This is just another way in which social media has advanced society in a positive way. Although this is a positive thing in my eyes, It is not to everyone.

"Something is seriously out of kilter in our communications environment when safe food products and proven technologies can be torpedoed by sensationalist, misleading, yet entertaining social media campaigns," said David B. Schmidt, president and CEO of the International Food Information Council. "We should all take several steps back and remember the critical thinking skills we were taught in school." I highly disagree with what Schmidt says. Of course he is going to take that approach when the uproar is indeed about his line of work. He obviously does not like the fact that people are taking a stand therefore he attacks the way in which they are doing so.

As I mentioned before, Kony2012 took the same approach of revolting by using social media. The word spreads fast when one is involved on the Internet because like the Cluetrain Manifesto says, “Hyperlinks subvert hierarchy.” Technology has advanced to the point of no return in a sense. Hierarchy (the food company) can no longer control or mask what is being said about their company. This is probably why David Schmidt is having a hard time with the realistic portrayals being put out there.

One of the head FDA spokespersons says that usually the FDA is already investigating the petitions put out on the Internet by the time they are released online. I personally think that this may be a cover up though. Companies can no longer hide anything anymore and this food revolt/ petition is a prime example of why this is a positive thing.

I definitely think that social networking is doing a good job of keeping youths education on what is going on in society. Because we function the way we do, if something is popular, we will read it. Kony2012 for example, did this exact thing.

Viral videos are videos that have been uploaded onto the internet and been watched by millions of people around the world. Video like “Kony 2012” has been seen over 78 million people and counting. The video created a sensation but not in a good way, the creator made the video for the intention...

This is a great post. I say this because viral videos are so popular in our day and age. They can either be deadly videos, or really funny ones. The whole Kony2012 situation was a perfect example of this.

The future of Social Networking...What is Next?

It was interesting to research what people think is going to become of social networking in the future. While I read this article, it was very interesting seeing what predictions have come true, and what still is yet to come. The article was written in 2010 and thinking back, a lot has advanced since then. One thing that Mark Suster, the man who wrote this article, mentioned was that social networking is soon to take over everything. Well now looking in the past tense, it has. Businesses do everything via Internet from virtual group work, meetings, emails, etc. Schools have even turned all to Internet. People shop, communicate, date and do their banking on the Internet.

Although I would definitely not say that this is a bad thing, I do not think that is particularly a good thing either. The problem with the Internet is that it is not entirely accessible or reliable. For example, when one person hacks the ASU website, it throws off all of the students and professor’s schedules for at least a week. Students cannot turn in assignments if the Internet is out, then things get frantic because they are afraid to be marked off. On the professor’s side of the situation, they can never truly tell if Internet problems are an adequate excuse for late assignments or etc.

People rely on the Internet for their whole entire world. I went on vacation for five days out of the country and hate to admit that I felt frantic when I did not have phone service and when my twitter, Facebook, MyASU website etc. would not load. This feeling makes me more stressed out than having everything at my finger tips because I am used to that. It hindered my vacation because I kept wondering what was going on in the “real world” and what I was missing out on. Now, I have never labeled myself as one of those people, but I am being honest. I was affected.

The Internet is everything today, and forever. There of course will be advancements in the technology, but as of now, it is everything. I already feel as though the Internet has taken over everything, but I am sure, as is Mark Suster, that there are still more spaces for the Internet to seep into. The filtration of Internet and social media into our daily lives has only begun…

Interesting post! The subject that you posted on is a very controversial topic right now. As you have seen, everyone else too, the KONY2012 video is going viral on Facebook in the last couple of days. Everyone is uniting together to raise awareness about all that is going on in Uganda and other areas around there. Everytime there is a positive outreach, there will always be negative people trashing the way in which people reach out. This is what I did my post about.It is very interesting. It can either be a good thing or a bad thing. I agree with what you said about when your parents tell you to watch what you put online. I think that we used to roll our eyes when they said that, but now it all makes sense. Once you put it out there, it’s out there. There is no taking any of it back.

I do not know if I think it is right or not for businesses to be able to do that. There is a personal line and a professional line. My opinions are still being formed on this controversial topic. Good post!

Social Media Used for Hiring

With technologies these days, companies are taking all different approaches in the way in which they hire their employees. One way that has become popular is over various social media websites. According to an article I read, "Nearly 90% of companies are planning to use social networks to find job candidates, according to a new survey, up from 83% a year ago." This can be both a positive thing as well as a negative idea for businesses and for applicants. Sometimes social networking sites can emit completely false information.

For applicants of a job, company’s looking at social networking websites can be a very negative thing as well as a positive one. The interesting and true fact about this approach is that it tells the “real” you dating back past just the hour interview they had with the applicant. Depending on how one maintains their behavior on Facebook, this may be a good thing. If one is always writing positive, uplifting posts, companies may see that and be impressed at your consistent positive attitude as well as your dedication to maintain this attitude. If one just puts whatever they want on Facebook, such as swearing and drunk pictures, a company may see these things and withdraw their proposal of being part of their company. Overall, when applying for a job, one needs to look at how they carry themselves over the Internet because businesses are in fact looking.

On the other hand, businesses browsing over social networking sites for considerable applicants could be a negative or positive thing as well. Businesses would have to make sure that they break through and detect whether or not these users are putting out a façade to the public. If they are, that may be okay if they decide to maintain that same attitude at work, but if they are not, their true colors may come out once they apply for the job and are settled. It is a hit or miss in this day and age.

Overall, it has proven to be very important to watch what one posts on the Internet. Once something is out there, it cannot be taken away. Who knows who could be looking at your information? For the most part, I personally try to stay consistent in only publically acceptable and positive comments on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook etc. “Don’t post any picture, say any words or take any actions that you wouldn’t want your grandmother to see,” advises Finnigan.
