That Lungfish strut
Sudden random picture of a giant lizard!
I was wondering if you are ever bored, if you would make a list of things you buy from the hardware store that's cheaper then a petstore? soil, moss, etc. :)
This is an excellent idea!
Note: This is not an exhaustive list and I would love it if other people chimed in. I will post links to alternative products that I know of, but you may be able to find ever cheaper options by searching harder.
Heat Lamps:
Depending on your heat needs you can often get the same effect from cheap household incandescent bulbs. Note this is one of those rare times you donât want to go with the energy efficient option; the less efficient the bulb is the more heat it will put out.
Light Fixtures/Clamp Lamps:
They sell much cheaper ones at Home Depot, usually in the lighting section. Note that if you have a heat lamp or ceramic heat emitter that puts out enough heat to melt plastic you need to get a light fixture with a ceramic base (which you may not be able to find at Home Depot).
Found here, here, and here.
Sand:
ReptiSand and CalciSand are huge ripoffs. You can get a huge amount of play sand from hardware stores for WAY cheaper.
Found here.
Humid Substrate:
If you are looking for a good humid substrate Iâve found that Eco Earth and ReptiBark pale in comparison to good old fashioned topsoil. Just make sure it doesnât contain any added unnatural fertilizer or chemicals. This can often be obtained in bulk at hardware or garden stores.
Found here.
Aspen:
For whatever reason you can get much larger and cheaper amounts of aspen sold for rodents than aspen sold for reptiles.
Compare aspen bedding prices here.
Solid Substrate:
Rather than getting ReptiCarpet (which is hard to keep clean due to the high surface area) or heavy slate pieces from the pet store you can get ceramic tile in tons of colors and designs from your local hardware stores. Some stores may even cut it for you (Home Depot does not do this unfortunately).
Found here.
Pebbles/Gravel:
Great for substrate/decorative use in some cases.
Found here and here.
Hydroballs:
Those little clay balls we use for the drainage layer in vivariums are also used in some gardening applications as âclay pebblesâ.
Found here and here.
Thermostats:
You can get cheap ones for plant heating mats online.
Found here, here, here, and here.
Light Timers:
The green ones they sell at pet stores are way overpriced.
Small light timers found here. Light timer power strips found here.
Humidifiers/Foggers:
Itâs not terribly difficult to make a DIY fogger from either a cheap humidifier or a fogger.
Foggers here. Humidifers here.
Thermometer/Hydrometer:
Acurite has a range of great thermometer/hydrometer products with variable numbers of probes and price options.
Found here. There are also cheap cigar humidifiers here.
Sprayer/Mister:
Products designed to spray weed killer or other chemicals are often much better designed and larger than those designed to mist reptiles.
Found here.
Humidity/Heat Holding Enclosure for Large Animals:
Indoor grow tents are designed to hold in heat and humidity and can be a lot cheaper than either glass or mesh terrariums. Not super aesthetically pleasing but if you are on a budget or need to move around a lot they can be better than a bulky/expensive terrarium.
Found here.
Incubator/Reptile Transport:
Do you need a well insulated, waterproof container that can be plugged into a car or wall outlet and has adjustable temperature? Check out these electronic heaters/coolers. They arenât terribly cheap but they do come in a range of sizes and prices.
Found here.
Bonus: Need to keep your aquarium/terrarium cool?
These fans are actually sold for aquarium use but Iâve never seen them sold at a pet store before. They have worked great in keeping the temperature down in our axolotls tank.Â
Hope that helped some people out! Let me know if I missed something that I should add!

âWe will continue to rehab dogs⊠By setting them up to fail and then kicking themâ.
I donât understand why you guys are all crying over this? The dog bit the pigs ear and it was treated shortly after its not like he tied the pig to a pole and let the dog chew on him. It was an accident boo fucking hoo get over it just because you guys donât like Cesar Millan so you have to make a big deal if he makes a mistake. Average tumblr crying over everything
Let me put this in perspective for you. Maybe you just havenât been informed yet, but it isnât because of âdislikeâ of the training methods or Milan as a person, and it isnât just âtumblr cryingâ. Cesar Milan has single-handedly set back the dog training community by twenty years.
Many reputed individuals and organizations have spoken out against Milan and his rather barbaric methods.
Below the cut will be my observations, riddled with sources from professionals.. who have more sources to back up the information.
DOG TRAINING COMMUNITY:
First, I must address the inherent problems with the term âdog trainerâ.
In this day and age, anyone may call themselves a âdog trainerâ without any qualifications because the dog training field has no regulations. While there certainly are classes and qualifications that make one more reputable, anyone can call themselves a dog trainer.
Cesar Milan is a self-proclaimed dog trainer. He has no previous schooling history or qualifications that make him reputable. He just claims he has always had a âway with dogsâ. He gets away with using the word âpet behavioristâ or âpsychologistâ because these titles are generic and arenât governed by any official regulatory organization or licensure requirements. (source)
ALPHA THEORY:
Here is the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behaviour (ASVAB)âs statement on the alpha / dominance theory in practice with dog training. If you donât trust me, some random on the internet, trust a bunch of experienced veterinarians.
Where did the alpha theory come from? In 1948, a study by W. Schneckel called âExpressions Studies on Wolves,â (available for reading here) surfaced. Individuals who believed the theory such as David Mech and Schnekel himself have come out and renounced those studies.
âAlphaâ implies competing with others and becoming top dog by winning a contest or battle. However, most wolves who lead packs achieved their position simply by mating and producing pups, which then became their pack. In other words they are merely breeders, or parents, and thatâs all we call them today, the âbreeding male,â âbreeding female,â or âmale parent,â âfemale parent,â or the âadult maleâ or âadult female.â In the rare packs that include more than one breeding animal, the âdominant breederâ can be called that, and any breeding daughter can be called a âsubordinate breeder.â
On top of the alpha theory being entirely incorrect, dogs are not wolves or âfake wolvesâ. Dogs separated from wolves approximately 14,000 years ago and have evolved differently. They are a separate species entirely from wolves and therefore should be treated as such. (source)
Observing feral dogs gives us a much more accurate picture of the domestic dogâs social structure than either wild or captive Wolf Packs. It is more likely that modern domestic dogs are descended from solitary feral dogs that scavenged human garbage for food than from a true familial pack. Scavengers do not need a team to track and bring down prey; they are usually more successful when operating by themselves rather than being reliant on other members of their group to find food.
What does this have to do with CM? The entire theory that his training methods are based on consist of outdated science! Â
HIS METHODS DONâT HURT DOGS:
Only, they do.
In the episode Fondue, Chip, Hope & JoyJoy, small dogs are lifted several feet off the ground and swung by the scruff of their neck. In Teddy, a Labâs feet are pulled off the ground by hanging him from the leash. Most disturbing, Shadow, according to veterinary experts who have viewed the footage, shows signs of asphyxiation after being hung by the leash (reports say that the rescue group that had previously adopted Shadow reclaimed him after seeing this episode).
However, the main criticism is aimed at the psychological stress that dogs are placed under during the show. Many dogs that offer avoidance behaviors at the start of the show are often pushed to the point of aggression. One example is JonBee, a Jindo who is forced to lie on his side. After a significant and dangerous struggle (during which the dog appears to have urinated), the dog finally gives up and allows himself to be rolled over. However, the dog is not relaxed. Quite the opposite. The dog exhibits numerous signs of stress, and is exhibiting a phenomenon known as learned helplessness, often referred to by trainers as âshut down.â JonBee, muzzled, is lifted off the ground by a choke chain, a procedure known as âstringing upâ. Prior to this, the dog had been attempting to avoid interaction with the star completely. Learned helplessness was originally observed by scientists who placed dogs in a box with no escape and shocked them through the floor. The dogs first tried to escape and then, exhausted and finding no exit, simply lay down on the floor, despite continued shocks. The dogs werenât enjoying the shocks more than they were in the beginning, they had simply given up.

YOU SHOULDNâT CRITICIZE HIM JUST BECAUSE YOU DONâT AGREE WITH HIS METHODS:
Why not? Isnât that how progress is made in any field?
When methods have great potential to cause harm and fail to accomplish the advertised results, professionals have an OBLIGATION to criticize.

So I would like to kindly tell you to shut up until you do some reading.
I accidentally reblogged to my main.
I suppose I should also say that he set a dog who had killed two pigs.. loose.. in a pen full of pigs before fixing the issues. Â What kind of moron does that?
Also the pig was visibly restrained while the dog attacked it soâŠ
Also he is just a huge cock head. like there are a lot of things Tumblr complains about that are not the more important thing in the world but the fact that people constantly get off with no charges in cases of animal abuse is a bit of a yucky problem, The fact that such a high profile trainer continues to not be held accountable for actions that continually put animals and people in danger. I think we can all agree the pig is probably fine now and maybe it will be a bit skittish around dogs but at the end of the day its not acceptable for someone who is so well known in the field of dog training to be using and promoting methods that do bring harm to animals, and people.Â
Are we forgettin Judy (or at least I remember it was Judy), the Jack Russel Terrier that has to be put to sleep because the techniques this asshole taught to their owners only âfixedâ the problem for a little while?Â
Oh yeah, that ânever happenedâ or at least we never seen any âofficial statmentâ of this because of the muzzle clause Milan puts on any person that wants him to âtrainâ their pet not to talk with any media about the problems that may arise after his âmagnificent training methodsâ.
Me: I think we should adopt another kid
Wife: no
Me: why?
Wife: because by 'kid' you mean 'lizard' and we already have 50
Me: *reaching into pocket* actually... 51.
