Sometimes retreating up to the roof to escape humiliation has its merits. Excluding when the very person you're trying to escape from comes up to see if you're alright. He cares only when you're upset, only asks when he sees it on your face. It's horribly frustrating, David finds, how uncomplicated the matter is when you look at it from an outside perspective. What he feels inside is probably unrequited. Chasing someone who doesn't know he's being pursued is its own special form of torment. David doesn't think very highly of himself, but he's sure he deserves better than an unwilling role this ridiculous game.

The worst part of it is that whenever Jack looks his way, whenever he slings an arm around his shoulders, pulls him in for a quick hug when they see each other in the morning, takes his hand when they're caught in the crowd so they won't lose each other—whenever he makes the effort, David can almost convince himself that Jack really does feel the same, and those warm little mannerisms are testament to his own individual way of showing his affection. Maybe he can't bear to say it, or maybe he doesn't know how, like David.
