Yeager was… someone who he hadn’t really talked to. Sure, there was no way Yuri wouldn’t have met the guy at least several times before, but most of what he knew of Yeager came from Casey’s stories about him when they were on duty. A shame, really, he should know his future big brother better than just that, right? 

So when a chance came along for him to hang out with Yeager for a day, of course he’s gonna accept it. 

… Kinda weird not seeing Yeager in uniform, though. 

“Yeah, duh!” 

All grins, he ran up to the other, stopping right before he could actually crash into him. Full of excitement exactly like how a kid would react to going on a secret adventure, and stared up at Yeager. 

“So! Where’re we going first?” 

Such excitement is a good sign and the man grins down at the boy before offering him a curt bow. The motion is exaggerated, of course, and he flicks the wrist of his extended hand to unfold a folded parchment from within his sleeve.

Like a sort of... magic trick~

“Do you promise not to tell your sister~? You know zhe city is full of old, old places... Zhe knights don’t seem to care too much about zhe secret ones~”

Righting himself the man offers the boy the folded parchment, the contents of which seemed to be a map of Zaphias’ civilian and royal quarters. It seemed to be a normal architectural drawing, though closer inspection held several circled areas, and a few directions and times scribbled in red ink.

“You do like adventure, ja~?”

He didn’t want to see her. Of course he didn’t. She knew all too well how much he’d changed, how eager he was to bury his past—their past.

She couldn’t let him.

“I know all too well what Yeager of Leviathan’s Claw is capable of,” she murmured, dropping any pretense of a local accent. With the two of them alone, she was free to wear her heart on her sleeve, her pain and uncertainty clearly displayed on her face as she toyed with the ends of her scarf.

She hadn’t forgotten who helped orchestrate the chaos in Nordopolica, who led the men who’d directly threatened her own life among countless others over the years. But she’d also spent enough time around the girls he kept at his side to know that their ‘Papa’ was still capable of kindness, among all else.

“And you know just as well who I am, don’t you?” Of everyone in this disorienting mirror world, he at least would surely still know her. And despite all evidence to the contrary, some part of her was still desperate to trust him.

It was unsettling to hear his title with that voice, aged of course but still so distinct... If there was any doubt still left buried, seeing and hearing her here, right in front of him... had bedded it thoroughly. 

It felt like a knife had been twisted into his gut.

“Did you think i could forget~? Ja, i know who you are, Canary~”

It softens his smile despite how painful the name feels, and if there was one thing Yeager was good at by now, it was burying how he felt. She was always good at reading him, though.

Running a hand through his hair he lets the hood settle around his shoulders, revealing the differences time had brought. He’s so distinctly recognizable but one can’t ignore the tiredness in those eyes, and the bags settled delicately underneath... Though his own differences were dwarfed by the changes his love held, and with a gloved hand he idly reaches to brush the short hair from her face, almost an instinctive action that hadn’t been done in over a decade.

“Zhis is a little far from zhe nest you know, all zhe vay out here... Did you not think to just write~?”

IV. THE WOLF. murders of crows. frost-bitten leaves. wolves howling at midnight. knocking on your door. leaving food out for stray animals. the twang of an acoustic guitar. honey.tiny red buds on trees. claw marks on the walls. golden eyes. slightly too long stubble. sharp canines.  soft, thick fur.  hunger. a small cottage in the middle of the woods. knitted fingerless gloves. sleeping on the forest floor. always finding your way back home.

For as long as Schwann had worn this mask, he had allowed himself to be Alexei’s puppet. Whether he needed a ‘hero’ to inspire the crowds to enlist more soldiers from the citizens of Zaphias, or a weapon to slay those who would oppose his decisions politically and otherwise….it was Schwann’s duty to fulfill such roles. When these duties lead him to wearing yet another mask, in the form of a guild member (albeit accidentally)…Schwann was an even more useful tool for the Commandant. However, this lead to long periods of absence, as Raven’s life took more priority and Schwann found himself appearing less and less among the public eye, especially after the position he had been given as a spy…to report the actions of a certain escaped princess. 

These meetings with Alexei were growing in rarity, more so than they had ever been in the last decade. So to see him home, surrounded by Alexei’s most loyal knights, was certainly an event that warranted at least a minuscule amount of surprise. It was another position that Schwann would not complain about, even if he disliked the eager eyes that watched him pass by. However…what he did not expect to see was a face he had grown to recognize among those of the guilds and their ilk. Standing there. Like an annoying obstacle on his way to safe seclusion.

“For what reason….are you here, Yeager of Leviathan’s Claw…? Your presence is obstructive to the work done here, and with such, I must ask you to vacate the premises. Even if I must do so by force.”

Oho, it would seem he caught the captain in a bad mood~? or perhaps he was the one to put him there. Either way the man smiles, baring teeth and giving the other a sweeping bow.

“Oh my, please forgive my intrusion~ I vasn’t to know zhat you of all people vould be here today! I thought zhere vas.... Ozher things you vere tending too~”

There’s a bite to his tone, however playful, and Yeager rights himself only to lean against the oak of Schwann’s door. Effectively blocking him from returning to his quarters.

“If you vish to escort me out i’m sure our dear Commandant vouldn’t be too happy... Ja, how sad it vould be to see you punished for interfering... Very sad indeed~”

He knows he’s testing waters right now, any other would hold more respect for a ‘war hero’... But Yeager knows he’s nothing but a mere puppet like himself, and Schwann is more likely to die than to upset their dear Commandant.

“Zhough i suppose if you insist....~”

It had always delighted the man that Casey had a younger sibling. Yeager had always been fond of kids, and it wasn’t unknown between him and his partner his desire to have some one day. But for now he merely enjoyed the company of his soon to be brother in law... And teach him a few things off the books of course.

Being a knight of the capital meant one had to hold themselves with a certain regard. Be respectful, be kind... Look good in front of the public as to not sway their opinion of you. The former two were ideals Casey held strongly, and while they didn’t translate into the nobility through his own brigade he’d do his best to keep them himself.

Outside of being a knight, though, he could do as he pleased. He wasn’t in uniform, no badges or armour around... There was a sense of freedom that came with being in civilian clothes that he was only a little ashamed of feeling.

Casey was the one cut out for this after all... Just maybe not him.

But that was a box of thoughts for another time, right now he was to focus on the task at hand... Which was to kidnap Casey’s brother for a day of pre-planned activities. He’d heard of a few rumours of areas in the capital that were barely guarded and supposedly full of secrets... and if it kept the young man out of trouble, then that was a bonus. It was perfectly safe if Yeager accompanied him, and sooner or later the boy would’ve found out and gone by himself...

Or at least that’s what he’d tell Casey if she ever found out.

“Ah, mein liebichen~ Are you ready to go~?”

Alexei’s call had been insistent, he was needed at the capital and if he was to attempt to prolong how long it took him to get there, the punishment would be painful. Again. It was such a shame, too... He’d planned on taking the scenic tour through Halure. It was supposed to be nice this time of year.

It wasn’t the threat of anything physical that made the man do as he was told, recent... developments had lead to things he’d rather not have had known being put in harms way. So, he was at Zaphias on time, though annoyingly a little early.

Just to piss the man off.

Such beautiful timing seemed enough to irritate, and he’d been banished to the wing of the castle occupied by the royal guard to mull about his business till Alexei was done. He hadn’t actually been here before, not as who he was now... The castle always felt so stuffy, and such an area always reeked of sweat and mindlessness. It hadn’t been high on his list of places to visit.

Though there was one small benefit to being in such a place, right here and right now. He hadn’t the roll call memorized or anything of that sort but it was easy to see the return of one favoured knight’s captain, as those around him fell in line.

Cute.

Red eyes watch the other carefully, a playful glance from where he stood leaning against the wall. How convenient it was that the very door he was resting by was none other than Schwann’s own~?

“Ah, zhe noble hero returns from his civic duty~ How lucky for me to be here now, then!”

“…Hmm.”

Capua Torim was a pretty lively place, especially after the adephagos had been ‘taken care of’ by the likes of Brave Vesperia. People who wanted transport from one continent to the next found their way there, and when Raven wasn’t traveling alongside those kids and their Entelexia friend, he had to find himself among the crowd of people looking for a ride across the big pond. That often involved more waiting than he’d like to admit, which, of course, landed the man with hours to spend and nowhere but the docks to spend it.

That’s when…he saw him.

In the sea of unfamiliar faces, of people he didn’t care to look at closer….stood a man who should have died for the second time. Someone he killed with his own two hands. Yeager.

“….You gotta be shitt’n me…….”

Torrim was always busy this time of year, with the Adephagos’ defeat and the world steadying itself back on course it was only an amount of time before people were able to do what they did best... Thrive under pressure and adapt to change. So eager they were to rebuild and move forwards that it was easy enough to slip into the steady beat of it all, unnoticed that they had a dead man among them.

It wasn’t like he was making too much of an effort to be unseen, though.

Red eyes look lazily out over the sea of people that bustled about the docks, eager to get from port to port, some arriving and some simply waiting their turn. It was entertaining to people watch in these moments where he could do nothing else, and it wasn’t until a particularly familiar face caught his attention that his gaze turned more serious.

Well well, what did we have here~?

He knew Raven would run into him eventually, it was bound to happen... And the look of surprise pulls a grin across Yeager’s face that seemed more playful than concerned.

Tilting his head to make sure the other kept his eye on him the man beckons with his hand for the other to come over. He’s not about to push into the crowd himself of course, where would the fun be in that when he clearly held the other’s curiosity... Or perhaps was it dread~? Either way his grin widens with the motion.

In a town so diverse as Dahngrest, it wasn’t hard to wander without drawing attention, so long as one knew how to act like they belonged. A confident stride, a casual smile, all belied her inner uncertainty.

There was a great deal for her to be concerned about. The rift in Altosk’s leadership, and by extension the Union itself, with the Don’s passing. The tentative, fragile peace between said Union and the Empire, that could crack with one false move from either side. But today, in the rare moments she could take for herself, she dwelled on a much more personal problem.

She’d lost him. Again.

If she’d had any lingering doubts about rebelling against Alexei when she did, seeing his face alive and well dispelled them, replaced them with regrets that she hadn’t done so sooner. He had to have known. He knew, and he kept it from her, kept him from her all along… And in the end, she was unable to save her old beloved. And equally unable to let go.

So when she locked eyes with a cloaked figure by chance and saw something painfully familiar, her practised mask fell away, her body moving before her rational mind could catch up. Approaching him, reaching out to him, seeking his warmth to confirm he was real…

She’d found him, and this time she wouldn’t lose him again.

He hadn’t expected such a bold reaction, for all his worth at reading people he had simply hoped that was just coincidental. That she just looked familiar. But when she moves towards him he felt his insides shrivel, such a rush of uncomfortable, painful emotion seeing her recognize him brung up...

He wanted out.

That flicker of feeling must’ve been telling on his face, dipping his hood to cover his eyes and pulling away from the crowd in an attempt to get lost in it. He’s not a tall man but holds such a distinctive stride, if it was her such an attempt would be futile either way. He didn’t move particularly fast because of this.

If they must do this it would not be in public, and with a click of his heel he pulls into the alleyway behind the Sagittarius. Out of sight, out of mind, out of the view of any that would recognize him as well as she clearly did.

"Don’t you know it’s rude to stalk people, mein liebchen? You have no vay of knowing vhat zhey’re capable of.”

Yeager didn’t have to look at her to know she had followed him, the hood of his outfit still hid half his face.. but the toothy grin that sits upon his features is plain enough to see. Would she comment on his face first, or perhaps they way he held himself now... He’d come a long way from the boy she knew before the war. Before he died for the first time.

Would she be disappointed in what he became? Or would she remain ignorant of it all... She wouldn’t know... She shouldn’t know.

Adjusting to life outside of the orphanage must have been hard, there are so many variables the girls probably didn’t expect. The manor in all its gloominess, the way its occupants shuffled about like mindless, violent morons. It wasn’t exactly the most ‘homely’ of places when one thought of a place to spend their life.

But, Yeager did his best none the less to make them feel at home. From their own room to their own things, new clothes and new toys... Everything was tailored to make them feel safer. Feel welcomed.

Within the first week he had taken them shopping, let them pick out things they wanted. Though the occasional snide remark was heard among Leviathan’s ranks a good beating and disappearance quickly put an end to disapproval. Disdain was kept in the dark, where it should be.

How dare their leader go soft after such a brutal force of power?

The girls were kept with him as much as could be possible, Alexei didn’t know of their existence and that is how it would stay. He was already so far under that man’s thumb, he wasn’t blind to what could happen if he held any more cards.

So with him they stayed, for their own safety and company... The latter of which was far more of an enjoyable reason. It made him feel human again, somewhere... Holed up in the small places he allowed himself to keep.

But did they like him? That was the real question, and the man ponders it between serving the hot food he’d made them for breakfast. An escape from endless paperwork and a reason to use his personal dining room more often.

Such an amusing sight to see, the man serving syrup laden pancakes at 8 in the morning.

Familiar faces;. - @knightoftheguilds;

The world was changing, for better or for worse it was changing. Subtly wasn’t the forefront, more a violent thrusting by some unruly children with big dreams and uncrushable spirits. Persistent to the end and now here they all are.

But who was he to judge them? He wasn’t there anymore, wasn’t that man anymore. A vicious cycle he found himself in... But this second death should be the last.

How weird to live for himself again.

It was easy enough to blend into the woodwork, everyone knew the head of Leviathan’s Claw was buried at sea. Crushed under rubble and rotting with the fish. Yeager, however, was here. Alive. Breathing the air of Dahngrest without strings to be pulled.

Really, those kids should’ve figured out he’d pull such a thing sooner.

But it wasn’t thoughts of bratty teens and young adults that currently held his interest in the guild town. No, he would’ve preferred it if it had been in this moment, if he allowed a trace of honesty. But those brown eyes, that signature hair flick. It would seem the past just wouldn’t stay dead this time and Yeager could feel the disdain at the thought edge its way into his glare.

Foolish girl. Dead girl.

He wouldn’t say anything right now, though.. The hood of his outfit pulled firmly over that mess of spiked hair. It’s longer now, but it was still so obvious, and while he is usually the type for boasting... He was still on this city’s watch list.

How unfortunate it must have been for her to look his way, to catch that glare...

But good little birds are supposed to stay dead.
