“i do plan on taking a small vacation to italy. for how long is still to be determined depending on company schedule. probably no longer than two weeks.”

“i would very much like a dog, but i don’t have time to take care of one and i fear it would be lonely and neglected. however, maybe that could change before next year...”

within the last year is there one thing you regret?

“i regret never taking any days off to spend with loved ones. even when i make a promise not to be here on sundays, something always comes up. whether it’s in my head or not, i don’t know at this point. i’ve become so used to it that when i’m at home it feels like i should be at work.”

Which trainees do you think improved the most since one year ago?

“this is the kind of question i don’t like to answer. the truth is, yonghwa, that if none of you improved you wouldn’t be here anymore. it’s not always something that can be observed in terms of dancing or singing. sometimes it’s just personal growth. but there are also a lot of you guys and it’s impossible for me to keep a ‘list’ of trainees who have improved most. it would not only be too long, but it would also change every other week. however, if i may say one thing, it’s that i’m quite proud of the new trainees who joined project origin. despite not being in either seasons of future dreams they were able to hold their own and integrate well within the group. but overall, i’m satisfied with everyone’s improvement this year.”

“keep this between us, but i would like to get married.”

“i believe our next generation of superstars is ready to take the world by storm, so the biggest goal this year would be for them to achieve successful debuts and set a new standard for rookie idols.”

Where do you think I'll be, career wise, one year from now on?

“well, hopefully you’ll have done a good job in all of your activities, stayed humble and impressed directors enough that you’ll have received interesting casting offers. that would be a good start for a rookie actor, right?”

Hello, sir. Compared to last year, have you been working out more? In the next year do you plan to give any advice or workshops surrounding your health routine for trainees so we can stay looking as good as you at your age?

“you’re a funny one aren’t you. if you were serious about wanting to know my health routine, i don’t know what to tell you. i follow a healthy diet - though i enjoy the occasional fried chicken, take notes - and exercise regularly. i should probably use this as an opportunity to brag, but i have no merit outside of just taking basic care of myself. the rest would be genetics, i presume?”

since a year ago, has your expectations changed on what a competent trainee/idol looks like?

“the reason i’m still working in this company - trust me, it’s not because of the salary - is because of how amazing and fascinating it is to see trainees bloom into talented artists. i used to have this mindset of treating everyone equally regardless of their personalities and basic skills. i realized how unfair that was. not everyone starts at the same level, so i had to adapt my expectations to every trainee that enters the company. now, i try to compare them to themselves rather than other people, because personal growth is more important than competition. it might be unrealistic, of course, since i have so little time to spend with them one on one. but i have a trusted team of coaches i meet with regularly. there’s no pre-determined format as to what a competent trainee or idol looks like. what works for you, what makes you unique is different for everyone. take dbsd, a group i’ve followed since before their debut as their former manager. they couldn’t be a more different bunch of individuals, but they work so wonderfully together. daehyun started as a very defiant trainee, turned out to be the most hardworking, bringing forth new ideas. siwoo was a hyper active trainee who had a hard time focusing on tasks and turned out to be the most versatile entertainer. seohan, who was a very quiet and often lost in his own head as a trainee turned all of that into wonderful creative talent. our youngest, shinhae, who lacked confidence, became one of the best vocalists of his generation, releasing solo music. they learned how to turn what were considered weaknesses into some of their biggest assets. to me, that’s what a competent artist is like and that’s what determines whether you’ll make it or not.”

One rule you'd love to break within the next year?

“quite frankly, i don’t need to abide by very strict rules as i’m not a public figure. i would never do anything to harm this company, therefore i don’t think i could say i’d love to break any rule this upcoming year. my younger, wilder days are behind me and i won’t expand any further.”

JULY 13

on monday, trainees from all subsidiaries and project origin members are gathered in the same room. KIM HYUNCHEOL stands before them with REO KANGDAE, HEO AECHA and BAE MIHI at his side. any assumption that this could mean good news would immediately vanish upon seeing their current expression. while none of them display any form of anger, they are clearly annoyed to have to do this. it's hyuncheol who steps forward to speak, while the others observe the trainees closely.

"it pains me to be here today. trust me, we could all make better use of our time instead of having to scold all of you once again because of the action of a few. however, i feel as though it's important that you get this through your head. being able to debut is a privilege. you all, i believe, work hard to achieve your dreams, though for some of you i find it difficult to believe they wish to go anywhere with the bad attitude they're displaying. while you're not expected to be perfect at all times, you are, however, expected to remain professional and respectful no matter the situation. if you feel as though as fellow trainee, a senior artist or a member of the staff is treating you badly, i would ask that you report such behavior to a trusted individual as soon as possible so we can sort it out. dating lottery, or any other show for that matter is not the place nor the time to air your dirty laundry and act like kindergarteners who don't know how to resolve conflicts like adults."

he sighs deeply. "i'm very close to pulling the plug on date lottery altogether. some of you act like you were forced to sign up for the show against your will. no one is obligating you to be there. if you signed up, then i expect you to behave properly no matter who you're paired with. do any of you believe these are real dates? this isn't real life. it is absolutely forbidden to kiss or have any inappropriate display of affection during your dates, nor is it okay to insult each other. i am clueless as to why i even need to be standing here before you and tell you this. do you believe even for a second that we would let you roam free during filming to act as you please? do you really believe that even when cameras aren't rolling, you are not being observed by the staff? if you think we will keep our mouths shut and edit your segments as if nothing happened, get this: we are not your servants. the editing team doesn't have to sit through your little outbursts and you stupidity more than they need to. and the staff does not have to witness the same things during filming. you will keep that to yourself and should there be a real problem that prevents you from acting like a reasonable person, we're here for this exact reason."

he lets his eyes scan the room, arms crossed. "from now on, you will be warned. if you display any type of wrong behavior during filming whether cameras are around or not, or if you're caught treating a coworker or member of the staff poorly, we will take strong action. i'm tired of having to intervene like this every time we try and give you a little bit more freedom. don't wonder why we're so strict. if you knew how to behave we wouldn't have to do this. this company would not be what it is today if we allowed trainees of poor character to become artists. the longer you're with us and the more we expect you to know this. some of you don't seem to understand the luck you have to even be in this room right now. don't make us regret ever offering you a contract with this company, because there are thousands of other hopeful young people out there willing to take your place. you're here because we believe in you, but our faith grows thin every time you decide to be circus clowns. grow up, own up to your mistakes and treat others with respect. if you can't do that you have no business being in legacy." while he usually cracks a smile even after a serious speech, there is none today. hyuncheol looks at the group gathered in front of him with nothing but disappointment before he turns around and leaves, closely followed by aecha, kangdae and mihi.
