Midsummer Fly, June 2014
The sun appeared and the wind blew for a Bo Peep special with Tone, Den, Luke and me, plus Paul, a yoof and some other chaps. Wind slightly off the slope but plenty of it to provide lift. A speed gun appeared and some fast passes were recorded, the highest being 258Km/h. Tone provided the BBQ and a farmyard of meat, the rest of us brought along a few bits including some unusually delicious strawberries. The morning and early afternoon saw the moulded stuff tooling about, and as the wind eased later, the scale units had their time. There are few better sights than seeing the '26 come past low from the back of the slope, hit the lift and climb away in a bank. Tone, Den and I left at about half seven, eyes and noses streaming from pollen off the miles of crops upwind. Just hope Den got to the bog in time.
The first full LGRA fly of 2014. It has rained for weeks, this was a welcome break. '26 unused for so long that the elevator pot stuck creating a fee Pampers moments as it looped unexpectedly.
Wet Wet Wet
I thought I'd better update the blog, even though the only flying we've done has been the odd dry hour between rain fronts at the park with the Funjet. I've been contemplating the floods as a good playground for the Seawind but the rain and wind has precluded such fun.
Ok weather gods, the aquifers and rivers are full, Bewl Water overflowing, you can stop now and let the humans come out and fly their planes.

Zeppelin Flight - 14 Aug 2013, a set on Flickr.
Zeppelin flight. Via Flickr: This short flight in a modern Zeppelin was one of the best experiences I've had. It is flight like nothing else, lifting off in a smooth climb, gently moving through the air with the modest drone of the motors quiet enough to hold a normal conversation. Watching the dark shadow draw its shape across the landscape 1000' below appealed to my love of this slow-moving beast and its behemoth predecessors. Even though the aircraft weighs several tonnes, helium inside reduces the AUW on TO to about 250kg, the machine is designed to fly heavier than air, presumably for stability, and flies using direct engine power on take-off, then the aerodynamic shape of the main structure when cruising speed has been reached. Bopeep and sun... and a load of middle aged blokes
Another warm day in the sun for a load of middle aged blokes.

The Saito tooling past.
RIAT - 21 Jul 2013, a set on Flickr.
Not really slope soaring, more the other extreme - noise, heavy metal and speed. RIAT 2013 was excellent.
LGRA and July
This month has seen more LGRA slope soaring than in the whole of that washout calling itself summer 2012. A contented gathering of glider pilots, all skiving off work, or without work, moaning away and generally wondering where they went wrong in life not to be able to get a slope-visa whenever they want one. The wind was slightly off the slope on the 18th, 4˚ according to The Master, which really buggered up his day, especially after he'd been narrowly missed by a glider which resembled a seal. Tone was wondering if his tumble dryer was being used in his absence and H dressed Milly the Dog with sheep fur (wool?) In all, time well spent.
A brilliantly warm and sunny day at Bopeep. The wind was slightly off the NE but what does that matter when the view is as good as this. A good compliment of LGRA and Thurnham Massiv in attendance. This is a layered burst shot of Paul's Race M.
LGRA BBQ, in the sun and wind up a hill in Sussex.
Shooting with Dean (Aerosight) this morning in Westminster.
Best day for years
Classic LGRA slope day 11 July
Den, Tone and Dean slope off for a day of BIG AIR, full ballast and blue sky. No BBQ thins time but looks like I missed a good'un.
